The Coastal Carolina-Liberty baseball game has been suspended at 3:58 p.m. Liberty leads Coastal 6-3 in the top of the seventh with a runner on third, two outs and Brant Peacher at the plate. The game will resume Sunday at 1 p.m., which will be followed by the regularly-scheduled game.
Liberty struck first in the bottom of the first, scoring a run off three hits. Chad Miller led off with a single to the left side. He was picked off by senior Mike Valter (Bloomingdale, N.J./Briarcliffe C.C.), but Michael Just singled after the Miller out. Just went to second on a balk and scored on a single from Phillip Laurent.
The Chanticleers tied the game in the top of the third. With one out, junior Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) was hit by a pitch off the foot. He would score on a double down the left field line by junior Adam Vrable (Bay City, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.).
Liberty scored five runs in the third to quickly take a 6-1 lead. Four consecutive hits opened the inning, as a Just single scored Miller and an Aaron Grijalva doubled put runners on second and third. Laurent singled home Just to make it 3-1 Flames. Errol Hollinger struck out, but a Valter wild pitch brought home Grijalva. A sacrifice bunt by Abe Yeakel scored Laurent with the fourth run of the inning. P.K. Keller was then hit by a pitch, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Phil John.
With one out in the top of the sixth, junior John Mariotti (Toronto, Ontario/Gulf Coast C.C.) hit his sixth home run of the season to left field, cutting the lead to 6-2. Junior Brant Peacher (Milton, Fla./Florida State) and freshman David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Graham) had back-to-back singles with one out and with two outs, sophomore Derek Martin (Barnwell, S.C./Barnwell) loaded the bases with an infield hit. Liberty got out of the jam without further damage as senior Aaron Verrett (Jupiter, Fla./Polk C.C.) grounded out to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Raber led off with a single and went to third on an opposite-field double from junior Matt Sutton (La Grange, N.C./UNC Wilmington). Raber scored on a groundout from Mariotti. Peacher stepped to the plate when the heavy rains started, stopping the contest. The two teams waited for around 40 minutes before the suspension of action.
