I think it was an effort to save Coastal money ... if there was a real good chance they wouldn't play anyway, why not push it back so they don't have to pay for x amount of hotel rooms for an extra night.

The way it's looking, they could've gotten in a game today and not tomorrow.

Quick answer to why the games were moved to Saturday-Monday. It was not a quick or hastily made decision.

The Big South and many other conferences have a rule that once the visiting team leaves their campus, you have three days to play the games. You get a day for travel and then the next three days to play games.

So, if the game would have been played today and it rained tomorrow, then the two teams would have definitely had to play a doubleheader on Sunday. You cannot bleed games over to Monday.

Yes, they still may end up playing a doubleheader on Sunday, but this way, there is at least a chance of getting a window to play a game between showers on Saturday and avoid a doubleheader on Sunday. If you don't play your games in the three days, they are not made up and you lose those in the standings. Since seeding and qualification for the tournament is by wins, it is as good as a loss.

3 of the 4 Big South series scheduled for this weekend are being played this way this weekend and Radford at Winthrop would have been had they not had lights and can play at night. Everyone tries to avoid the doubleheader.

6-3 Liberty... Top 7th... Coastal with a runner on third with two outs... Noah is busy working out in leftfield with a circular saw, a box of nails and crate of 2x4's.

FINAL:

Coastal 3
Liberty 6

Game was called for rain in the top of the 7th inning, but of course after four and a half innings it's an official game. Press release should be up after while I imagine with final numbers. Tomorrow's game is set for 1 pm with radio beginning at 12:50 on 90.9 FM WWMC. Game is also available on www.flamessports.com on the listen live link.

The Coastal Carolina-Liberty baseball game has been suspended at 3:58 p.m. Liberty leads Coastal 6-3 in the top of the seventh with a runner on third, two outs and Brant Peacher at the plate. The game will resume Sunday at 1 p.m., which will be followed by the regularly-scheduled game.
Liberty struck first in the bottom of the first, scoring a run off three hits. Chad Miller led off with a single to the left side. He was picked off by senior Mike Valter (Bloomingdale, N.J./Briarcliffe C.C.), but Michael Just singled after the Miller out. Just went to second on a balk and scored on a single from Phillip Laurent.
The Chanticleers tied the game in the top of the third. With one out, junior Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) was hit by a pitch off the foot. He would score on a double down the left field line by junior Adam Vrable (Bay City, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.).
Liberty scored five runs in the third to quickly take a 6-1 lead. Four consecutive hits opened the inning, as a Just single scored Miller and an Aaron Grijalva doubled put runners on second and third. Laurent singled home Just to make it 3-1 Flames. Errol Hollinger struck out, but a Valter wild pitch brought home Grijalva. A sacrifice bunt by Abe Yeakel scored Laurent with the fourth run of the inning. P.K. Keller was then hit by a pitch, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Phil John.
With one out in the top of the sixth, junior John Mariotti (Toronto, Ontario/Gulf Coast C.C.) hit his sixth home run of the season to left field, cutting the lead to 6-2. Junior Brant Peacher (Milton, Fla./Florida State) and freshman David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Graham) had back-to-back singles with one out and with two outs, sophomore Derek Martin (Barnwell, S.C./Barnwell) loaded the bases with an infield hit. Liberty got out of the jam without further damage as senior Aaron Verrett (Jupiter, Fla./Polk C.C.) grounded out to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Raber led off with a single and went to third on an opposite-field double from junior Matt Sutton (La Grange, N.C./UNC Wilmington). Raber scored on a groundout from Mariotti. Peacher stepped to the plate when the heavy rains started, stopping the contest. The two teams waited for around 40 minutes before the suspension of action.

My mistake. Thought I had a reliable source in giving me that information about today's game, apparently not the case. My apologies.
