Rutgers,as in the team we're NOT playing in FB next fall. ANYWAY- first game is Friday, 1 PM start- followed by Game 2 Saturday, also at 1 PM and Game 3 on Sunday at noon.

They probably come in angry, seeings as they won their first 3 but have since lost 9 straight, including a 3 game woodshed beating at the hands of Geo Tech where they lost the first game 25-8, and were outscored in the series 48-14.

I don't know how much danger there is here but lets hope the guys get 2 outta 3.

Rutgers up 6-2 in the 7th. LU just wasted a 3 on no one out opportunity. Page has been lifted and Daniel is on the hill. Not looking very promising at the moment.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights hit four home runs en route to defeating the Liberty Flames, 7-2, Friday at Worthington Stadium, snapping the Flames’ nine-game winning streak.

With only their second loss in 16 games, Liberty drops to 16-4 on the season, while Rutgers ends their nine-game losing streak and moves to 4-9 on the year. The Flames’ nine-game winning streak tied the NCAA Division I school record for consecutive wins with the 1985 and 1995 teams.

Rutgers took a 1-0 advantage in the top of the second inning on a leadoff solo home run by Frank Meade.

Liberty countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. After opening the inning by loading the bases, Phil John (Jr., RF, Linwood, N.J.) singled sharply back through the middle to plate a run. The next batter, Patrick Gaillard (Jr., SS, Taylors, S.C.) walked to force in the Flames’ second run for a 2-1 lead.

Rutgers even the score with one in the third and took the lead with two in the fourth inning. In the third, Todd Frazier doubled to the wall in right center with two outs to score Vic Cegles, who had reached on a fielding error by the Liberty third baseman.
Meade hit his second home run to lead off the fourth inning and the Scarlet Knights added a second run on a ground out by Tim Querns which scored Steve Hooks, who had doubled.

Up 4-2, Frazier add to the Rutgers’ lead with a solo two-out home run to right field in the fifth inning, while in the sixth, Jeff Grose singled home another run.

Luis Feliz hit a solo home run in the eighth for a 7-2 Scarlet Knight advantage.

Liberty starter Ryan Page (So., LHP, Cranberry Twp., Pa.) took his first loss of the season after picking up the win in each of his last five appearances. The left-hander allowed six runs, five earned, over six innings on nine hits, while striking out four. Billy Daniels (Sr., RHP, Colonial Heights, Va.) followed with two innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out three. Jason Koziol (Fr., RHP, Paramus, N.J.) and Douglas Wallace (Fr., LHP, Hurricane, WVa.) worked the ninth.

Junior right-hander Steve Holt evened his record at 2-2 on the season for Rutgers, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out two and walking seven. Joe Baione recorded his first save allowing only one hit over three innings.

Tommy Bussey (Fr., DH, Boynton Beach, Fla.) was the only Flame with more than one hit on the afternoon, while Frazier collected three hits and teammates Meade and Grose had two for the Scarlet Knights.

Liberty and Rutgers will meet again tomorrow afternoon in the second game of their weekend series at Worthington Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

A 4 run 7th inning is what did it for the Flames. Nice way to bounce back from yesterday's disappointment. Freshman Dane Beakler gets the win with Thompson credited with the save. Had 12 hits, Miller with 3, Laurant and Galliard with 2 each. The gametracker has that message board on the bottom of the screen blocking most of the stats. How do I remove that stinkin' thing so I can see the whole boxscore. Need to win on Sunday to maintain our 45 ranking.

Major conf but a pretty weak team. I'm actually starting to EXPECT wins from these guys! Looking forward to the UVa game (see the thread on that one) because they are one of the few challenges on this schedule.

Not to jinx the guys- but 40 W's is NOT outta the question.

40 wins SHOULD get the Flames at least an at-large bid, because you'd think that would put them 1 or 2 in the conference. That would probably shut me and HMO up about any coaching issues, too.

Four-Run Seventh Inning Lifts Liberty Past Rutgers
March 18, 2006 · Lynchburg, Va.

Trailing 3-1, the Liberty Flames rallied to score four seventh-inning runs for a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Saturday afternoon at Worthington Stadium.

With the victory, Liberty moves to 17-4 on the season, while Rutgers drops to 4-10. The Flames have won 15 of their last 17 games.

The Scarlet Knights took an early 2-0 lead with single runs in both the first and second innings. In the first inning, Rutgers plated a run on double play and in the second, on a RBI double by second baseman Mike Bionde.

Liberty cut the lead to 2-1 in the third inning. With two outs, Aaron Grijalva (r-So., 1B, Redlands, Calif.) walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The next batter Phillip Laurent (Sr., LF, Cantrall, Ill.) doubled to right center field to score Grijalva.

The Scarlet Knights added another run in the seventh inning on a RBI single by Jeff Grose for a 3-1 lead.

However, the 3-1 advantage was short lived as the Flames erupted for four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Phil John (Jr., RF, Linwood, N.J.) and Patrick Gaillard (Jr., SS, Taylors, S.C.) singled to open the inning. The next batter Chad Miller (Sr., 3B, Wheat Ridge, Colo.) singled up the middle to scored John with Liberty’s second run of the afternoon. After a fielder’s choice and a fly out, Laurent chased both runners home with a double off the left center field wall, his second double of the game, to put the Flames in front, 4-3. P.K. Keller (So., CF, St. Petersburg, Fla.) followed with a RBI double to the bottom of the center field wall for a 5-3 Liberty lead.

Rutgers rallied in the ninth inning with two outs. A throwing error by the Flames third baseman and back-to-back singles loaded the bases, but reliever Phillip Thompson (Sr., RHP, Ringgold, Va.) induced the next Scarlet Knight batter to pop up to end the game.

Liberty starter Dane Beakler (Fr., RHP, York, Pa.) ran his record to 2-1, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits in seven innings, while striking out two and walking one. Dustin Umberger (Fr., RHP, Hummelstown, Pa.) worked 1 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and striking one. Thompson entered the game and pitched to two batters to earn his fourth save of the season.

Freshman right-hander Matt Giannini took the loss for Rutgers to fall to 0-4 on the season.

Miller went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run and John went 3-for-4 with a run for the Flames. Laurent with two doubles and Gaillard also had multiple hit games for Liberty. Designated hitter Tom Edwards with three hits and Grose with two hits had multiple hit games for the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers and Liberty will meet again tomorrow in the final game of their three-game weekend series. First pitch on Sunday is scheduled for Noon.

Scarlet Knights Use Four-Run Eighth Inning For Win Over Flames
March 19, 2006 · Lynchburg, Va.

Box Score Note:
For game box score, click “Team Stats” link on the right-hand navigation bar as all season box scores are listed on this link.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights rallied for four runs in the eighth inning, scoring the winning run on a balk, for a come-from-behind 7-6 win over the Liberty Flames, Sunday afternoon at Worthington Stadium.

Rutgers moves to 5-10 on the season, while Liberty falls to 17-5 overall.

The two teams traded runs in the first inning. Jeff Grose, who led off the top half of the frame with a single, later scored from second base on a throwing error by the Flames’ first baseman. Liberty countered in the bottom half of the inning with a run on three hits. Patrick Gaillard (Jr., SS, Taylors, S.C.) doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a single by Chad Miller (Sr., 3B, Wheat Ridge, Colo.).

Ryan Hill put the Scarlet Knights ahead, 2-1, in the fourth inning with his fifth home run of the season and in the fifth inning, the Scarlet Knights stretched their advantage to 3-1 on a RBI single to right by designated hitter Tom Edwards. Rutgers would later load the bases with one out, but could not bring home another runner in the inning.

In the sixth inning, the Flames capitalize on an error by the Scarlet Knight third baseman to score three two-out runs to surge ahead, 4-3. With two outs and Miller at first base due to the error, Phillip Laurent (Sr., LF, Cantrall, Ill.) found the left center field gap for a double to chase home the Liberty third baseman. Next batter, P.K. Keller (So., CF, St. Petersburg, Fla.) followed with a double over the centerfielder’s head and off the wall to plate Laurent with the second Flames’ run of the inning. Errol Hollinger (Fr., C, Upland, Calif.) then scored Keller with a RBI single to right field for the first Liberty lead of the afternoon.

In the seventh inning, the Flames extended their lead to 6-3 with two doubles and a triple. With one out, Gaillard doubled for the second time in the game and scored as Miller tripled off the wall in left center field. After a pitching change and a foul out, Aaron Grijalva (r-So., 1B, Redlands, Calif.) delivered Miller with a RBI double.

Rutgers recaptured the lead with four runs in the eighth inning. Todd Frazier doubled and Hill walked to open the frame. Frank Meade doubled home Frazier for the first Scarlet Knight run of the inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Tim Querns singled up the middle, scoring two runs and knotting the game at 6-6. A batter later, a balk with runners at second and third plated a run for a 7-6 advantage.

Liberty threatened in the bottom of the inning as Hollinger led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. However, reliever Sean Spicer was able to get the next two batters to strand the runner.

The Flames’ Miller then opened the bottom of the ninth with a double. The next batter, Michael Just (Sr., 2B, Woodcliff Lake, N.J.), grounded in the hole between third and short, which the Scarlet Knight shortstop Frazier was able to field and throw out Miller trying to advance to third base. A double play then ended the Liberty threat for 7-6 win.

Flames’ starter Phillip Thompson (Sr., RHP, Ringgold, Va.) allowed six runs, five earned, in seven innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked one. After picking up a win in each of his first three starts, he did not figure in the decision. Tim John (Jr., RHP, Linwood, N.J.) faced two batters in the eighth and picked up the loss to fall to 2-1 on the season. Dustin Umberger (Fr., RHP, Hummelstown, Pa.) pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing two hits.

Spicer, the third Rutgers’ pitcher of the afternoon, ran his record to 2-0 on the season for Rutgers, allowing three hits in 2 2/3 innings.

The Flames’ Miller for the second day in a row had three hits as the third baseman went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored on the afternoon, while four other Liberty players had two hits in the game. Of the Flames’ 13 hits, 10 were for extra bases, with 8 doubles and two triples. The Scarlet Knights had three players with two hits each in the game.

Liberty returns to the road this week, beginning with a single game Tuesday night in Charlottesville, Va. as the Flames visit the Virginia Cavaliers. Game time Tuesday is scheduled for 6 p.m.
