Carryover from the other thread...where he is mentioned in a couple of SC media outlets as having discussed the job opening. So, WHO is Jim Toman?
Image
Recruiting Coordinator/Catchers
One of the top recruiters in college baseball, Jim Toman served under head coach Ray Tanner at North Carolina State for seven years and joined the South Carolina staff when Tanner became the Gamecock head coach in June of 1996. A former N.C. State catcher, Toman serves as recruiting coordinator and works with the catchers. Coach Toman was promoted to associate head coach at Carolina in August and is now in his ninth season on staff with the Gamecocks.

Toman has aided in recruiting 13 top 25 classes, including all eight seasons at South Carolina. The 2004 class was recently ranked ninth in the nation by Collegiate Baseball with last year's class tied for first in rankings by Collegiate Baseball and ranked second by Baseball America.

The 2002 class was ranked eighth. The 2001 class was ranked 10th and 2000 class 8th best by Collegiate Baseball. The 1997 Gamecock class was ranked 17th and the 1998 and 1999 classes were both ranked 11th.

Toman received a national honor in 2002 when he was named National Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association and Baseball America.

He seems like he would be a great hire...BJ, we need you to sneak away from band camp to run recon at Hancock.

I've been told if we get this guy our recruiting would get exponentially better. He's an awesome guy and a good coach. The guy I talked to didn't think he'd leave for us but you never know.

I'll be too busy trying to keep the bugs off during practice (not to mention band camp isn't for another 2 months) to have much time to run recon on anything

I think the BJ teasing is getting played out. Cut my man some slack.

As for the candiadte, I am curious to hear more about him. His lack of head coaching experience is obviously a concern. But the fact that he has been around the game so long make sit less of a problem than you would first appear.

I cannot imagine Royer or even Pastors getting that animated...it would certainly add some life to Worthington Field.

3 words: Deep Woods Off.
And an old boy scout trick is to spay it on the visor of a ballcap to keep the bugs out of your eyes.

Catchers, as a rule, are pretty heady players. Tim McCarver. Rick Dempsey. Joe G. Even David Duncan became a pitching coach as a catcher. About the bow tie, it worked for our first law school dean.

(1) Attends a BAPTIST church.

(2) Sits in the balcony with his family.

(3) Goes to Sunday school.

(4) Is an asst. coach at USC.

'Sounds like a perfect JB hire! What was JB's quote? He wants a "coach that goes to church." Let's make it happen.

From a SC message board...so consider the source
Was told yesterday by another USC supporter that Toman was going to take a trip to Liberty..today on the Sports Talk Shows it was said he had the job and make take it if LIBERTY came up with the $$$$ he (Toman) is requesting ! Jim is the strength for recruiting and the guys like him a lot. I would hate to see him leave but you cannot blame a guy for wanting a head coach job.

...and from another board:
I had already posted it earlier on another thread and board with the article from the Spartanburg paper. He's up there with his family this weekend. He deserves a HC position at some point but I have no idea if this is really a good opportunity or not.
Toman Taking Hard Look At Liberty

Phil Kornblut
Published June 14, 2007

USC associate head baseball coach and Jim Toman confirmed Thursday night he has been in discussions with Liberty University athletics director Jeff Barber about becoming he Flames new coach. "I have been speaking with Liberty and am interested enough to bring my wife up there maybe next week," Toman said in a text message while on the road recruiting in Ohio. Toman said he had not been offered the job. He said he will know more about the financial package from the school in a few days.

Well, it definitely appears that this is JB's top choice. Hopefully it will work out.

A guy on one of the message boards I'm on that has a lot of credibility called Toman "the best talent evaluator in the country."

I don't see any reason why wouldn't be able to offer him more. I don't know how much more, but definitely more. You know Barber knows approximately how much he would be looking for, and is taking that into consideration.

It'd have to be a package that made him the highest paid coach (by-far) in the Big South. Gilmore is making 97k.

The biggest things I can see that could attract him here are:
a) It'll be his own program
b) The cost of living in central Virginia is probably lower than in Columbia (I'm guessing, I haven't researched it)
c) I don't know if he has kids or how old they are, but the VA education system is better than SC
d) I don't know how much he's making off of camp at South Carolina, but here he could make a pretty penny off of camp.

With all that being said, here's what I think could keep him in SC:
a) He's at a program that's in the Super Regionals a lot.
b) If he does have kids, depending on their age, he may not want to uproot them and take them away from their friends.
c) SC is comfortable. He enjoys it there. Quality of life isn't just the amount of money you make.
d) While we love our school, we have to admit that he could possibly get a job at a place that's a bigger name currently. We all think that our program could become like Coastal's given a good coach and some time, but that still takes a ton of work.

At least we now what what the top salary range (base) for coaches in the Big South is....
...Hudak at 91 K and Gilmore at 97K. I'm sure they get their camp revenue on top of it, plus other perks.

His kids are younger...bewteen 4 and 10 years old...so this would be a very good time in life to uproot the family. As far as $$, I had a very wise coach who I respect say that you should never switch jobs, if you are happy where you are, unless there is a big salary bump.
