Nanry and Young Lead Flames Past Colonials, 9-3

March 9, 2007
Lynchburg, Va.

Liberty’s Tim Nanry went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Garrett Young drove in three runs with a solo home run and two-run triple as the Flames defeated the George Washington Colonials, 9-3, Friday afternoon in the opening game of a three-game series between the two teams at Worthington Stadium.

The Flames also got another solid outing from starting pitcher Michael Solbach (R-Jr., RHP, Woodbridge, Va. ) as they moved to 11-4 on the season. Liberty has won 10 of its last 11 games. The Colonials fall to 1-10 on the year.

The host Flames led from start to finish as Young (Jr., Fountain Valley, Calif.) put Liberty on the score board in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, the center fielder hammered a solo shot over the left field fence to give Liberty an early, 1-0, advantage.

The contest settled into a pitcher’s duel until the sixth inning. Phil John (Sr., RF, Linwood, N.J. ) singled to right field to lead off the frame and advanced to second base via an error on a pick off attempt. A batter later, Nanry (Sr., DH, Rochester, N.Y. ) pulled a pitch down the left field line for a double to plate John and extend the Flames’ lead to 2-0.

George Washington cut the Liberty edge to 2-1 in the top of the seventh. First baseman Pat Lehman reached on an infield single into the gap between the shortstop and the third baseman to open the inning. After advancing on a wild pitch and later a ground out, the runner scored the Colonials’ first run of the game on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the seventh, Liberty came right back with three runs of its own to up its advantage to 5-1. With one out, Errol Hollinger (So., C, Upland, Calif. ) singled and advanced to second on a two-out single by John. After a balk put both runners into scoring position, Young ripped a bases-clearing triple into the right-center field to make it, 4-1. Nanry then brought home Young with a RBI single.

The Flames plated more four runs in the eighth. Patrick Gaillard (Sr., SS, Taylors, S.C.) singled and scored on a triple to the bottom of the center field wall by David Giammaresi (R-Jr., Coral Springs, Fla. ) to begin the inning. The Flames’ third baseman then came home on a wild pitch. Later in the frame, Liberty added two more runs as Aaron Phillips (Jr., 2B, Claremore, Okla.) scored on a wild pitch and Kenneth Negron (So., LF, Kingwood, Texas) came home on a grounder to third by John.

George Washington scored two in the ninth to account for the final of 9-3, plating the runs on back-to-back RBI singles by pinch hitter Doug Eizen and third baseman Mickey Shupin.

Liberty ’s Solbach gave up four hits and an unearned run in seven innings in winning his third-straight start to run his record to 3-1 on the year. The right-hander struck out five and walked one. Tim John (Sr., RHP, Linwood, N.J. ) came on in the eighth inning and retired all four hitters he faced, striking out three. Dane Beakler (So., RHP, York, Pa. ) allowed two runs on three hits in closing out the ninth. George Washington’s Scott Swinson took the loss to fall to 1-2. He allowed five runs on nine hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Besides Nanry and Young, Phil John and Gaillard also had multiple-hit games with two hits apiece for the Flames. Shupin had two hits for the Colonials.

George Washington and Liberty will meet again tomorrow in the middle game of the three-game weekend series at Worthington Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.

I've been mowing grass for weeks down here. Which is worse: shoveling snow or mowing grass? I choose the latter.

Winning Streak Halted as Flames Fall to Colonials in Extra Innings, 6-5
March 11, 2007
Lynchburg, Va.

Shortstop Michael Parker hit two home runs as the George Washington Colonials defeated the Liberty Flames, 6-5, in 10 innings, Sunday afternoon at Worthington Stadium, snapping the Flames’ four-game winning streak.

With the setback, Liberty drops to 12-5 on the season, while George Washington improves to 2-11. It was the first loss in five games for the Flames, who have won 11 of 13 contests since beginning the season 1-3.

The Colonials took their first lead of the game in the top of the second inning. Chris Marsicano singled with two outs to keep the frame alive for George Washington. Right fielder Gavin Swanson followed with a home run to right to put the Colonials up, 2-0. The round tripper was Swanson’s first of the year.

Liberty came back in the home half of the inning to make it, 2-1. First baseman Aaron Grijalva (R-Jr., Redlands, Calif.) walked with one out and after a fly out, stole second. David Giammaresi (R-Jr., 3B, Coral Springs, Fla.) then singled to center to score Grijalva with the Flames’ first run of the contest.

In the fourth inning, Liberty knotted the game at 2-2. Designated hitter Tim Nanry (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) doubled into the right field gap to open the fourth and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Grijalva followed with a sharply hit single to center which brought home the designated hitter with the tying run.

The Flames took a 5-2 edge in the next inning. Errol Hollinger (So., C, Upland, Calif.) walked and Kenneth Negron (So., LF, Kingwood, Texas) singled to left to lead off the fifth. Both runners moved to second and third on a balk. After a blooper by Phil John (Sr., RF, Linwood, N.J.) fell in behind third base to load the bases, Garrett Young (Jr., CF, Fountain Valley, Calif.) singled to score Hollinger and Negron. Liberty later added a run on double play.

Meanwhile, Flames’ starter Tyler Light (So., RHP, San Bernardino, Calif.) settled into a groove after giving up two runs in the second. After walking a batter with two outs in the third inning, the right-hander retired nine straight hitters, before yielding a hit in the sixth.

In the eighth, George Washington rallied to tie the contest. Pinch hitter Doug Eizen singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a grounder to third. The next batter, second baseman Tom Zebroski, followed with a single to put runners on the corners with one out. Liberty relief pitcher Tim John (Sr., RHP, Linwood, N.J.) entered for Light and his pitch was lined by shortstop Michael Parker over the left field fence for a three-run home run, tying the game at apiece.

The contest went to extra innings as neither team could break the deadlock in the ninth. Parker gave the Colonials a 6-5 advantage in 10th inning with his second home run of the contest, a solo home run to lead off the extra frame. Nanry reached an error to lead off the Liberty half of the stanza, but George Washington reliever Derek Haese erased the runner by inducing a double play, effectively killing the Liberty rally.

Light allowed four runs on six hits, while striking out six and walking one in 7 1/3 innings, before giving way to Tim John. John gave up two runs on six hits over 2 2/3 innings and falls to 0-1 on the season. Haese, the third Colonial pitcher on the afternoon, improves to 1-3 on the year as he pitched four innings of shutout relief.

Young, Nanry and Phil John had two hits apiece for Liberty. Charlie Kruer had three hits on the day to pace George Washington.

The Flames host Virginia Tech at Worthington Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
