Shawler Wins Back-to-Back Performaces Of The Week

NORFOLK, VA--Garrett Young and Aaron Grijalva each had three hits and two runs batted in to lead the Liberty University Flames (10-4) to an 8-2 victory over Old Dominion (11-7) Tuesday afternoon. The loss ended ODU's six game winning streak.

The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth as Mike Zahm Omaha, NE.) singled, advanced on a balk and came home on an RBI single by David Burns. (Jacksonville, FL.) Liberty then scored five in the fifth highlighted by a two-run single from Aaron Grijalva which plated Garrett Young and Phil John. David Giammaresi then doubled homeGrijalva and Patrick Gaillard.

Liberty then added three more runs in the eighth as Garrett Young singled to plate Nate Thompson. Young would later score on a passed ball and Kenneth Negron scored on Cody Browns fielders choice groundout to give Liberty an 8-1 lead. The Monarchs final run came in the ninth as Tyler Belcher (Bristol, VA.) singled home Burns.

Liberty's starting pitcher David Stokes went eight innings allowing five hits, no walks and five strikeouts for his third win of the year. Liberty returns to action Friday March 9 when they host George Washington at 2:30. ODU begins CAA play in Harrisonburg, VA. against the James Madison Dukes. Game one of the three-game series is 3 p.m. Friday.

NOTE: Sophomore pitcher Anthony Shawler repeated as CAA Pitcher of the Week. The sophomore righthander from Oscar Smith High School has now thrown two straight Shutouts. He is 4-0 with a 2.37 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 30.1 innings. He is also hitting ..279 with one homer and seven RBI's. CAA Rookie of The Week went to thirdbaseman Jake McAloose who hit .545 with three doubles, nine runs scored and nine RBI last weekend. He is currently hitting.388 and tied for second on team with 20 RBI.

Even as a resident of the 7 Cities I agree with smooth...its always good to get a win over ODU. Theyre one of the better baseball programs in the state.
