Manhattan comes in with an 0-3 record after dropping 3 games to open the season at home against South Florida, a member of the Big East. They come in with a team batting average of .124, 0 home runs and just 2 extra base hits overall. Their leading hitter is Matt Rissotti who went 3-10 in that opening series for a .300 average.

We should have a good opportunity to sweep this team although I think that we just need to keep up the momentum that we have with us into this weekend.

In the first 2 innings the LU bats are aweful quiet. Good thing Solbach is pitching a heck of a game so far. But we need to get some hits sooner or later.

March 2, 2007
Lynchburg, Va.

Garrett Young scores on a wild pitch in Liberty's 6-2 win Friday.

Using another strong outing from pitcher Michael Solbach, the Liberty Flames broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fifth inning and defeated the Manhattan Jaspers, 6-2, Friday afternoon at Worthington Stadium.

Liberty’s seventh-straight victory moves its record to 8-3 on the season. Manhattan drops to 0-4 in the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the baseball diamond.

The visiting Jaspers took a short-lived, 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. In the top of the frame, Jaspers’ left-fielder Eric Nieto led off the stanza with a single to right and stole second base. After advancing to third on a ground out, the left-fielder plated the contest’s first run when center fielder Mike Garcia’s pop fly behind the infield was dropped by the Flames’ second baseman.

In the bottom of the inning, Liberty knotted the game. After reaching on a fielder’s choice with two out, Cody Brown (R-So., 1B, Boca Raton, Fla.) advanced to second when the next batter, Aaron Phillips, (Jr., 2B, Claremore, Okla.) was hit by a pitch. David Giammaresi then sharply singled past the bag at third to chase home Brown with the Flames’ first run of the afternoon.

Liberty batted around during its four-run fifth inning. Patrick Gaillard (Sr., SS, Taylors, S.C.) doubled down the left field line to open the frame. Aaron Grijalva (R-Jr., DH, Redlands, Calif.) followed with single to score Grijalva for a 2-1 Flame advantage. Later in the inning, after loading the bases with two outs, Garrett Young (Jr., CF, Fountain Valley, Calif.) came home on a wild pitch for Liberty’s second run of the frame. Giammaresi then walked to reload the bases for P.K. Keller (Jr., RF, Clearwater, Fla.), who singled up the middle to bring two more runners home for a 5-1 advantage.

Those runs were all Solbach (R-Jr., RHP, Woodbridge, Va.) needed on the afternoon in running his record to 2-1 on the season. The right-hander allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits over seven innings, striking out seven and walking two.

In the seventh inning, the Jaspers made it, 5-2. Garcia was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a walk to catcher Nick Debra and then to third on a wild pitch. Designated hitter Rubin Perez brought home Garcia with a one-out grounder to second base.
Liberty added a run in the eighth inning for the final score of 6-2. Errol Hollinger (So, C, Upland, Calif.) doubled to open the stanza. The runner then moved to third on a bunt single in front of third base by Gaillard and came home on a sacrifice fly by Grijalva.

Tim John (Sr., RHP, Linwood, N.J.) came on for Solbach in the eighth and pitched two innings of scoreless, no-hit relief in earning his first save of the year. Jasper starter Josh Santerre drops to 0-2 on the season, as the left-hander allowed five runs on six hits in
4 2/3 innings.

Gaillard led Liberty’s 13-hit attack by going 3-for-5 in the game and scoring a run. In addition, Tim Nanry (Sr., LF, Rochester, N.Y.) and Hollinger had two hits apiece for the Flames. Nieto had two of the four Jasper hits.

Liberty and Manhattan meet again tomorrow afternoon at Worthington Stadium in the middle contest of the three-game series. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Down 6-2 when I left. I only stayed for three innings though. I've been sick and staying outside with it as windy as it was didn't sound too great.

Manhattan Halts Liberty Winning Streak With 9-2 Victory
Patrick Gaillard had two hits on Saturday.
March 3, 2007
Lynchburg, Va.

Manhattan catcher Nick Debra hit a grand slam and pitcher Jesse Darcy pitched a complete game as the Jaspers snapped Liberty’s seven-game winning streak with a 9-2 victory over the Flames, Saturday afternoon, at Worthington Stadium.

With the setback, Liberty drops to 8-4 on the season. Manhattan moves to 1-4 with its first victory of the year.

The Jaspers jumped a 2-0 advantage in the top of the second inning. Debra singled to open the frame and moved to second when Anthony Amenio’s fly ball was dropped by the Flames’ center fielder. Both runners then moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Ruben Perez and scored on a two-run single to center field by third baseman Ryan Masters.

Manhattan extended its lead on Debra’s grand slam in the third. Keith Nieto singled to begin the frame and moved to second when center fielder Mike Garcia was hit by a pitch. After first baseman Matt Rizzotti walked to load the bases with no one out, Debra hit his first home run of the season over the right field wall for a 6-0 lead for the Jaspers.

Liberty came back in the bottom of the inning with two runs to cut the Manhattan lead to 6-2. With one out, Kenneth Negron (So., LF, Kingwood, Texas) doubled to the wall in right. Phil John (Sr., RF, Linwood, N.J.) followed with a single to right field to chase home Negron with the Flames’ first run of the contest. Next batter Garrett Young (Jr., CF, Fountain Valley, Calif.) single for Liberty’s third-consecutive hit of the inning, advancing John to third. A sacrifice fly by Aaron Grijalva (R-Jr., DH, Redlands, Calif.) plated John.

The Jaspers added one in the seventh and two more in the eighth to make it, 9-2. In the seventh, left fielder Eric Nieto singled with one out and scored on a RBI single by Garcia. In the eighth, shortstop Rene Ruiz singled home Debra, who reached on a double, and Armenio.

Liberty starter Dustin Umberger (So., RHP, Hummelstown, Pa.) falls to 2-2 on the season. In 6 2/3 innings, the right-hander gave up seven runs on nine hits. Reliever Dane Beakler (So., RHP, York, Pa.) followed, allowing two runs on two hits. Andrew Wilson (So., RHP, Cary, N.C.) allowed two hits in a scoreless ninth.

Manhattan starter Jesse Darcy went the distance to pick up his first victory of the year to even his mark at 1-1. The senior right-hander scattered eight hits and gave up two runs, while striking out four and walking one.

Garcia went 4-for-4 with a double and a RBI and Debra went 3-for-5 with the grand slam, a double and three runs scored to lead the Jaspers. Negron and Gaillard had two hits apiece for the Flames.

Manhattan and Liberty will meet in the three-game weekend series finale tomorrow afternoon at Worthington Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Grijalva’s Two-Out Triple Begins Eight-Run Uprising in 14-6 Win Over Manhattan
Aaron Grijalva drove in five runs with a 4-for-5 day Sunday afternoon against Manhattan.
March 4, 2007
Lynchburg, Va.

Liberty’s Aaron Grijalva bases-clearing triple with two outs broke a 6-6 tie and began an eight-run eighth-inning eruption, pushing the Flames past the Manhattan Jaspers, 14-6, Sunday afternoon in the final game of a three-game weekend series between the two teams at Worthington Stadium.

Grijalva (R-Jr., 1B, Redlands, Calif.) went 4-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored in helping Liberty move to 9-4 on the season. With the win, the Flames take the series, two games to one. Manhattan drops to 1-5.

Tied 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth, Liberty scored all of its runs with two outs. After the first two Flames were retired, Patrick Gaillard (Sr., SS, Taylors, S.C.) doubled to right field to keep the inning alive. Garrett Young (Jr., CF, Fountain Valley, Calif.) and Tim Nanry (Sr., DH, Rochester, N.Y.) each walked to load the bases. Grijalva then sent a liner off the bottom of the wall in right center field for a triple to clear the bases and give the Flames their third lead of the afternoon. David Giammaresi (R-Jr., 3B, Coral Springs, Fla.) followed with a double down the right field line to plate Grijalva. A single by Phil John (Sr., RF, Linwood, N.J.) scored Giammaresi for a 11-6 lead, chasing Jasper reliever Jeremy Shaw.

Tommy Bussey (So., 2B, Boynton Beach, Fla.) greeted new pitcher Brian Pendergast with a single to right field, advancing John to second base. Nate Thompson (R-Fr., C, Stoneville, N.C.) then blasted his first home run of the year, a three-run shot, over the left field wall to put the Flames up, 14-6. The Flames had eight-straight batters reach safely on six hits and two walks with two outs in the inning.

The visiting Jaspers took advantage of a Liberty miscue to take a 1-0 lead to open the contest. Right fielder Keith Nieto reached on a fielding error by the Flames’ second baseman, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out by center fielder Mike Garcia. With two out, first baseman Matt Rizzotti then singled home Nieto with the first run of the game.

In the second, Manhattan returned the favor as Liberty turned two Jasper errors into runs. Nanry reached to lead off the home half of the frame on a fielding error by the third baseman. The next Flames’ hitter also reached when a fly ball by Grijalva was dropped by the center fielder for a two-base error, placing runners on second and third. Nanry then scored Liberty’s first run of the afternoon on a RBI ground out by Giammaresi. Two batters later, Grijalva gave the Flames a 2-1 edge, scoring on an infield single by Bussey.

The score went to 3-2, Liberty in the third inning as both teams traded runs. Nieto led off the stanza with a double and scored on a two-out single by third baseman Dom Lombardi in the Manhattan third. Young doubled to left center with one out and beat the throw to home plate on a Grijalva single in the Liberty third.

The Jaspers took a 4-3 lead in the back-and-forth contest with two runs in the sixth. Catcher Nick Derba singled to open the inning and advanced to third on a one-out double by pinch hitter Marc Giordano. After the next batter struck out, shortstop Rene Ruiz sent a liner into the right-center field gap for a two-base hit, chasing home both runners and putting Manhattan back on top.

Manhattan added one to its margin in the seventh. With one out, the Jaspers loaded the bases and scored on a fielder’s choice. However, reliever Ryan Page (Jr., LHP, Cranberry Twp., Pa.) got out of the inning without further damage by striking out Giordano, who had assumed the designated hitter role.

In the bottom of the inning, the Flames took their second lead of the contest. Kenneth Negron (So., LF, Kingwood, Texas) singled and both Gaillard and Young walked to begin the one-out rally. Negron scored on a sacrifice fly by Nanry to make it a one run game, 5-4 Manhattan. Gaillard tied the contest at 5-5 on a single by Grijalva, and Giammaresi put Liberty ahead, 6-5, with a run-scoring single.

The Jaspers knotted the game at 6-6 in the top of the eighth. Second baseman Ryan Masters singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a single by left fielder Eric Nieto moved Masters to third, a sacrifice fly by Keith Nieto tied the game and set up the bottom of the inning eight-run Liberty outburst.

Flames’ starter Tyler Light (So., RHP, San Bernardino, Calif.) went 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, while striking out four and walking two. Page entered in the sixth inning and allowed three runs on six hits in picking up his first victory of the season for a 1-0 mark. The left-hander struck out five and also walked two. Manhattan reliever Shaw was roughed up for six runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings to fall to 0-1 on the year. He walked three hitters and struck out one.

Along with Grijalva, three other Flames had multiple hits in the game as Giammaresi, who also knocked in three runs, Negron and Bussey totaled two hits apiece. Four players ended up with two hits apiece for the Jaspers.

Liberty hits the road for a midweek contest on Tuesday in Norfolk, Va., as the Flames will square off with the Monarchs of Old Dominion. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
