We just completed 6 innings. We hold an 8-2 lead right now over VCU. Big 6th inning for us with 5 runs.

We are still holding that 8-2 lead going into the ninth inning. Ryan Page went in to pitch to relieve Tyler Light. Lets hope that it holds up.

Its over now. We win 8-2. Always good to knock off well respected teams in the state and in the Colonial Conference. As far as I know we beat a good team on the road today.

Nice victory on the road.

Hey, if we could just play Richmond schools all the time we might run the table. :D

Non-sequitur CAA plug: Though it probably will never happen, LU needs to get the CAA mojo.

Joining the CAA would hurt us in baseball. I bet the baseball guys, for their own selfish (not that any of us can blame them) want us to stay Big South.

The Big South might just be tougher than the Colonial right now especially with Winthrop and Coastal doing so well

From the fishwrap:
Region Roundup: Young leads LU past VCU in baseball

From staff reports
Lynchburg News & Advance
February 28, 2007

Liberty's Garrett Young went 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBI to pace Liberty University's basketball team past VCU, 8-2, Tuesday afternoon at the Diamond in Richmond.

With the victory comes LU's sixth in a row and improves the Flames' record to 7-3. VCU falls to 4-4.

Liberty jumped out on top with a run to open the contest. With one out, the VCU left fielder dropped a fly ball to left by Phil John for a two-base error. Young then lined his first double into the right-center field gap to score John.

VCU knotted the game in the second inning at 1-1 when third baseman Chris Jackson homered.

LU regained the lead in the third when John walked and stole second. Young doubled again, this time down the left-field line past the bag at third, scoring John. Young moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI ground ball to the shortstop by Patrick Gaillard.

The Flames broke the game open with five runs in the sixth.

Flames starter Tyler Light handcuffed the Rams through the first five innings. The sophomore allowed one run on five hits, striking out two and walking one in raising his record 2-0 on the season. Light retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced.

Left-hander Ryan Page came on for Light in the sixth and allowed an unearned run on two hits over 3 1/3 innings. Dane Beakler recorded the last two outs for the Flames.

Closers don't go 3.1 innings.

they did when baseball was baseball

but I can see this becoming a trend...a trend that makes my arm ache if he ends up doing this several times a week.

Yea, I don't like him being a reliever. He was overpitched last year and had arm trouble, being a reliever isn't going to help that.

If conditioned correctly, a closer can go 3 IP in mid-week games, and then throw 1 or 2 as needed in a couple of the weekend games. I look at a closer just the same as a "stopper.."
...stop the bleeding. Why use your closer in simply 8th/9th inning situations...
...when he can be used to stop a rally in the 6th and 7th? That doesn't mean he has to pitch the last 3 innings, just stop the fire when it happens.

Huston Street used to go 2-3 innings on Tuesday and then close out every game on the weekends when he was with the Horns. Then again Augie has a reputation for wearing out his arms. But he did win two more titles since arriving in Austin.
