Didn't realize USC was #1 this year but the bigger (in this case higher ranked) they are the harder they fall!!!!!!

Well I was hoping for a closer game after we were down by only 3 after 7 but afterall USC is number 1 in the country so I can't be too dissapointed in that.

Playing the top-ranked team is like buying a lottery ticket. The chances of winning are slim but the potential payout can be extraordinary.

Flames Fall to No. 1 South Carolina, 10-2, at Crab House Shootout
February 16, 2007
Charleston, S.C.
» Box Score

James Darnell and Phil Disher each hit home runs to lead the No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks past the Liberty Flames, 10-2, Friday afternoon, at Riley Park in the first game of the Crab House Shootout Presented by Trademark Properties.

Liberty drops to 1-3 on the season. South Carolina, ranked No. 1 in the nation by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America, remains unbeaten at 4-0.

South Carolina jumped out on top, 4-0, in the home half of the first inning with four two-out hits. After back-to-back singles by right fielder Lonnie Chisenhall and first baseman Justin Smoak, designated hitter Disher walked to load the bases. Center fielder Andrew Crisp then singled up the middle to plate the contest’s first two runs. Robbie Grinestaff followed with a two-run double.

In the third, the Gamecocks added a single run for a 5-0 advantage. Crisp walked to lead off the inning and came around to score on a double to the bottom of the wall in center field by shortstop Reese Havens.

Liberty cut into the South Carolina lead with two runs in the top half of the sixth. The first three batters of the frame reached to load the bases with no outs. Shortstop Patrick Gaillard walked, center fielder Garrett Young followed with a double to the right-center field gap and Aaron Grijalva also received a free pass during the sequence. After Gamecock starter Harris Honeycutt struck out the next batter, right fielder Phil John doubled sharply past a diving first baseman, plating Gaillard and Young. However, with runners at second and third and one out, reliever Will Atwood came on to retire the next two Flames’ batters to keep it a 5-2 game.

With its first hit since the third inning, South Carolina extended its lead to 7-2 in the seventh. With one out, Grinestaff walked and scored on a two-run home run by Darnell to left. It was the third baseman’s second long ball of the season.

The next inning, the Gamecocks closed out the scoring on a three-run home run to left by Disher, the designated hitter’s second of the year.

One of five Liberty pitchers, starter Michael Solbach fell to 0-1 on the year, allowing five runs on seven hits over four innings. The Flames mound staff walked nine batters on the afternoon. Honeycutt moved to 2-0, yielding two runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Liberty outfielder Garrett Young went 2-for-3 with a run scored to continue his strong start in his first season with the Flames. In his first start of the year, John also had two hits. Chisenhall paced South Carolina with three hits and two runs scored. The right fielder has a hit in each of the Gamecocks’ four games this season. Catcher Trent Kline also had two hits for South Carolina.

Liberty squares off with host The Citadel tomorrow afternoon at Riley Park in its second game of the Crab House Shootout Presented by Trademark Properties. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Umberger Pitches Liberty Past The Citadel, 2-1, at Crab House Shootout
February 17, 2007
Charleston, S.C.

Liberty starter Dustin Umberger had an outstanding afternoon, allowing one unearned on two hits over seven innings as Flames defeated the Citadel Bulldogs, 2-1, Saturday afternoon, in its second game of the Crab House Shootout Presented by Trademark Properties at Riley Park.

The Citadel took advantage of a Liberty fielding miscue to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning. With one out, second baseman Bryan Altman reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and moved to second on a ground out. The runner then scored on the first hit of the contest for either team on a single to center field by Richard Jones.

Held hitless through the first four innings, Liberty opened the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles. Tim Nanry reached on an infield single on a grounder deep in the hole between shortstop and third base. The next batter Cody Brown singled past the second baseman to put runners on first and second. After Bulldog starter Matt Crim retired the next two batters, catcher Errol Hollinger singled sharply up the middle to plate Nanry and Brown for a 2-1 Flames’ advantage.

Umberger kept the Bulldogs in check through the first seven innings, holding the Citadel to two hits and the lone unearned run, while striking out five and walking one batter, before giving way to Ryan Page to begin the eighth. The right hander records his first victory of the year to move to 1-1. Page retired all six batters he faced to earn his first save. Crim falls to 0-1 after yielding two runs on four hits, striking out three and walking one.

The Flames finish their three-game weekend at the Crab House Shootout tomorrow morning against Richmond. Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Riley Park.

Here is the writeup on the game. One for the records.

February 18, 2007
Charleston, S.C.

Tim Nanry hit three home runs to pace a school record-breaking 28-hit attack as the Liberty Flames defeated the Richmond Spiders, 28-7, Sunday at Ripley Park in their final game at the Crab House Shootout Presented by Trademark Properties. The Flames broke the school mark with 28 hits and tied the record for runs in the contest.

With the win, Liberty evens its record at 3-3 as the Flames went 2-1 on the weekend at the Crab House Shootout Presented by Trademark Properties. Richmond falls to 0-3 on the year.

The Flames’ 28 hits set a new standard for hits in a contest, breaking the old mark of 26, which the 2006 squad reached in a contest at UNC Asheville on May 13 of last season and on March 25, 1995, against UMBC. Liberty also tied the school record for runs scored as the Flames also plated 28 runs in 28-3 victory over Radford on March 19, 1985.

Richmond used back-to-back, two-out hits to take a 1-0 advantage to open the contest. First baseman Joe Mahoney singled to right and scored on a single to the left center field gap by third baseman Cameron Brown.

Liberty came back in the home half of the first inning with three runs to stake itself to a 3-1 advantage. Shortstop Patrick Gaillard (Sr., Taylors, S.C.) led off with a single to right and plated the Flames’ first run of the game on a double to the gap in left field by Phil John (Sr., RF, Linwood, N.J.). Center fielder Garrett Young (Jr., CF, Fountain Valley, Calif.) walked. Nanry (Sr., LF, Rochester, N.Y.) then delivered John with the frame’s second run on a sharply hit single to left. After both runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, Young scored on a RBI ground ball to shortstop by designated hitter Aaron Grijalva (R-Jr., Redlands, Calif.).

In the second inning, the Flames extended their lead to 9-1, sending 11 men to the plate in the frame. Catcher Errol Holliger (So., Upland, Calif.) walked to open the inning and moved to second on catcher’s inference to Gaillard. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a balk and Hollinger came on a sacrifice fly by John. The next batter, Young then hit a two-run blast over the left field wall to put Liberty up, 6-1. It was the center fielder’s second of the season. Nanry followed with a solo shot down the left field line, his first of the year. The back-to-back homers were the first for the Flames since David Giammaresi (R-Jr., 3B, Coral Springs, Fla.) and Hollinger connected for back-to-back round trippers in the fourth inning of an 18-4 win at George Mason on April 26, 2006..

Liberty continued its outburst as Cody Brown (R-So., 1B, Boca Raton, Fla.) and Grijalva both singled and Giammaresi walked to load the bases. Second baseman Aaron Phillips (Jr., Claremore, Okla.) then stroked a single to left, plating the final two runs of the inning.

The Spiders cut their deficit to 9-5 in the third. Alex Worting singled up the middle to begin the uprising and advanced to third on a single by Austin Reilly. Andrew Justice brought home the first run of the inning with single. Mahoney followed with a two-run single and later scored on a single to left by Vince Riggi.

After holding the Flames off the scoreboard for the first time in the game in the bottom half of the third, Richmond added a single run in the top of the fourth. Wotring doubled with one out and reached third on a two-out error by the shortstop. Mahoney then singled sharply past the first baseman into right to bring home Wotring with an unearned run.

Liberty upped its lead to 15-6 in the home half of the fourth as the Flames batted around for the second time in the contest. The first four batters reached to open the inning. Giammaresi singled to left, Phillips was hit by a pitch and Hollinger singled to load the bases for Gaillard. The Flames’ shortstop doubled home two runs to make it, 11-6.

Hollinger then plated the third run of the frame on a RBI grounder to first by John. The next batter, Young promptly lined a double to the bottom of the left field wall, chasing home Gaillard. After a Nanry single, both runners scored three batters later on a single to left by Giammaresi.

In the fifth inning, Nanry hit his second home run of the game and season, a three-run shot to left, to extend the Liberty lead to 18-6.

The score moved to 25-6 in the sixth frame as the Flames batted around for the third time in the contest. Liberty plated runs on a RBI single by pinch hitter Nate Thompson (R-Fr., C, Stoneville, N.C.), a single by Young and a three-run home run by Nanry, the left fielder’s third in the game.

The Flames added three more in the seventh and Richmond plated an unearned run in the eighth to cap off the contest.

Liberty starter David Stokes (Jr. RHP, Locust Grove, Okla.), one of four Flame pitchers on the afternoon, tallied his first win in a Liberty uniform as he gave up six runs on nine hits, striking out seven and walking none in four innings of work. Richmond starter Ian Marshall took loss, allowing nine runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Nanry led the Liberty offensive outburst by going 5-for-5 with eight RBI, four runs scored and three round trippers. John also knocked in six runs with three hits and Young continued his strong start to the season with a 4-for-5 afternoon with four RBI and a home run. Gaillard tied a school mark by scoring five times in the contest. Mahoney had four of the Spiders seven hits in the game.

Liberty returns home next weekend to open their 2007 home schedule. The Flames host Albany in a three-game weekend series, Feb. 23-25. The opening game of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday.

great day for the offense. Looks like the hitters feasted on some bad Richmond pitchers. Good day to boost their confidence and may be just what they needed to get them going. Should be more of the same next weekend verses Albany. Keep swinging the bats guys!!!!!
All in all good job to take two of three. No surprise they did well against the weaker teams though. It will be interesting to see them play the better teams, as they play with more confidence.........Go Flames!!! :beatinghorse
