Installation of Collar Begins Baseball Facility Improvement
January 19, 2007
Lynchburg, Va.
Workers finished the installation of an athletic turf home plate collar yesterday afternoon at Worthington Stadium in the beginning of several upgrades to the facility for the upcoming season.
The SofStep 200 Premium Athletic Field Turf collar, which was installed over a two-day span, is blue with a white “Liberty” behind home plate. The two inch thick turf collar saves wear and tear on the grass around the home plate area. In addition to the collar, additional lighting has been installed to the Crowder/Muckel Field House’s indoor batting cages.
The two projects are the beginning of a flurry of projects planned for the baseball facility over the next month. The Liberty team locker facility will be refurbished with a Tuflex floor surface and new paint scheme. Also, installation of wind screens down both the left and right field lines and renovation of field’s score board are also planned.

I need a visual--anybody on campus with a digital camera who can snap a pic of this and download it on this thread?

WRONG FREAKING COLOR BLUE! Way to go, Royer. How did that get by JB?

Barber's not happy. The company said that it would get darker when the sand and all of that but it didnt'.
Had this been last year, that would've looked great since baseball still used the royal blue.
On a side note, we do have new uniforms.

The football field got darker once they put the rubber balls and groomed it or whatever...
But the collar didin't...is there any way the company will fix it.
And the next question...WHEN ARE THERE GOING TO BE LIGHTS FOR NIGHT GAMES!!

Maybe it'll be gone next year, along with some other things

thanks that will save me a trip out,. Just a thought, can any of you more knowledgable baseball enthusiast please explain to me Why would you put a royal/navy blue turf on a green and yellow grass field.

My thinking is it's a cost thing.
A lot of schools will paint their name around the same area we have put that turf. Instead of having to repaint it every weekend, they just went out and got the turf.

I took a second look, its just loud and out of place

It's too big. It goes halfway up the baselines. If it just wrapped around home plate it wouldn't be so obnoxious.

I like the concept though.
the thought was good- maybe they do a Williams and upgrade/change the color later.
here's the point though- until we start drawing a couple 1000 to the games, no one but the guys see it anyway

Maybe all these renovations are being done to attract a new top drawer pitching coach?

Royer's the pitching coach this year.
JB's goal is to turn Worthington into a 1500-2000 seat stadium with lights and all of that, good enough for us to host the conference tournament.

Any idea how many it seat now? I wish the soccer field had some decent seating, too.

I don't know currently what it seats.
I'm thinking they'll just wrap seating around from dugout to dugout and build and actual press box.

We've had those for a few years, over on the 3rd base side in their new building.

Those luxury boxes are nice especlially early in the season but something about sitting in sun watch a little baseball is pretty nice too

Take a look at Winthrop's stadium and you'll understand why we don't host the conference championship. Their's seriously looks like it's a minor league ballpark. And a good one, at that.

Navy would not look good...
...most fields I have seen with the collar have it green...
...like the old one was.

With some upgrades, our stadium could be as nice as any in the BS. The trees in the background are nice in the Spring and the added bonus of spreading out a blanket on the hill behind home plate make it an extremely nice afternoon.

For our stadium to get any better, we're going to have to put bleachers on the hill you're talking about.

This is true but there is always down the third baseline as well.

I think the stands should stretch from the third base dugout to the end of the first base dugout where it goes now.
