due to the 1/4" of snow you guys got  the game has been postponed until Thurs the 16th. Which makes game #5 (VCU) come before game #4 (Longwood) which will be followed by game #6 (@ Longwood). I think.

Liberty Baseball Opener With Longwood Postponed
February 14, 2006 · Lynchburg, Va.

The Longwood Lancers - Liberty Flames baseball game scheduled for tomorrow afternoon has been postponed due to the snow storm which came through Lynchburg over the weekend.

The two teams will instead meet on Thursday afternoon at Worthington Stadium. First pitch for the contest is set for 2:30 p.m.

The VCU game is in limbo. I'll know by mid-afternoon if it has been postponed. The outfield is soaked, that's the major problem. Good thing is that these games can be easily rescheduled thanks to the proximity of the opponents.

Feed sounds good. Just a bit windy. That's pretty annoying.

You guys are pretty good, BTW.

(and by the way, NONE of the players from Longwood are from around "these parts", unless Richmond and Tidewater have been relocated).
Of course, only a couple of our guys are local, too--but that's a whole other rant.

FLAMES WIN 4-3

Bennion steals second, goes to 3rd on the throwing error then is driven in on a base hit down the 1st base line

That's baseball right there. That's how the game is supposed to be played. Get em on, get em over, get em in. I wish I was there to see that.

Unfortunatly since the Press Box isn't big enough to house us... we have to fight the wind. The noise is from the wind coming into the headsets. How about the brand new "PAMEDIC Press Box and Lounge at Worthington." We know you have the big bucks.

Do you have wind screens on the mics?

My brother and sister are up here for a day or two (they didn't have school today or tomorrow) so I was out showing them around and drove past the baseball stadium (I had the top down) and heard the announcing and I realized how much I missed baseball.

Why not announce from the VIP room?

Why not announce from the VIP room?
Yes, we do have wind screens on the head phones. They help up to about 5-10 mph. After that, there is not much you can do, it can actually pick up the noise of the wind blowing off your head and clothes.

As far as the VIP room, it isn't really set up for a broadcast (phone lines, direct feed, tables) but it could be a possibility if the Athletic department wanted to put us there. There hasn't really been any talk of that, but there has been mention of work on a new press box, but I imagine that will be a ways from now. To be honest, it would be hard to be in the VIP room just because it is so far away from the official scorer and in baseball it's good to be nearby for lineup changes and scoring decisions.

I am not complaining... they take care of us as best they can with a tent if the weather looks bad... it just means that on windy days there will be sounds of wind. Personally, I try to shield the mic with my stat board during outdoor broadcasts... but if you have to read what's on the board, sometimes it just isn't possible and if the wind is from behind, you are out of luck.

Wow... four pieces of plexiglass on the side of a hill with two guys inside it calling a game... shouldn't we also get a station truck to put next to us up on blocks?

Miller's RBI leads Flames past Lancers
By Chris Lang
Lynchburg News & Advance
February 17, 2006

Liberty third baseman Chad Miller and Flames second baseman Michael Just chatted in the dugout in the seventh inning Thursday with their team holding a one-run lead, and the gist of the conversation was this:
"He was like, 'we need to get a run,'" Miller said. "And I was like, yeah, that would be nice. Actually, we needed to get about five."

Not a half-inning later, Longwood pulled even with a solo home run. Nice foreshadowing, fellas.

Even so, Liberty came out on the right end of another nailbiter when Miller pulled a single taut against the first-base line to score Derek Bennion from third with one out in the bottom of the ninth. The hit gave the Flames a 4-3 victory in the fourth one-run or extra-inning game the team has played this season.

"We're five games in and we haven't had a blowout in one way or the other," Flames coach Matt Royer said.

That fact has made it difficult for Royer to work some freshmen into the batting lineup or the pitching rotation. The games have simply been too close.

Perhaps the trial-by-fire mentality will have to do.

Liberty's hitting was again an issue as the Flames managed nine hits against three Lancers pitchers. Liberty stranded seven baserunners and struggled in clutch at-bats until Miller's ninth-inning single.

"We've still got a long way to go," Royer said. "We've got to hit better. When you don't hit, every pitch is important, every play. It just puts more pressure on everyone."

Longwood (3-4) had momentum on its side after Robbie Bailey drilled a home run to straightaway center to lead off the eighth, tying the score at 3. It was only Longwood's third home run of the year.

With one out in the ninth, the Lancers put runners at first and second before Travis Lydon popped up to first. A tricky wind carried the ball into the infield, and as Liberty first baseman Aaron Grijalva gave chase, he bumped Lydon.

Lydon was called out for interference, and the runner at second, Tyler Ames, tried to sneak to third. Grijalva gunned the ball to Miller, who applied the tag for the bizarre double play.

"The umpires never called anything," Longwood coach Buddy Boldin said. "They called it after the play, but it was already finished then."

Liberty (3-2) didn't waste its chance. Bennion singled, stole second and advanced to third when catcher Jon Quigley's wild throw went into the infield. Miller, much more at ease knowing he only needed to find a pitch to drive for a sacrifice fly, settled in and lined the single.

Miller’s Ninth Inning RBI Single Pushes Flames Past Lancers
February 16, 2006 · Lynchburg, Va.

Chad Miller’s one-out single down the right field line in the bottom of the ninth inning provided the Liberty Flames with a 4-3 victory over the Longwood Lancers, Thursday afternoon at Worthington Stadium.

Visiting Longwood opened the scoring on the afternoon with two runs in the top half of the first inning. With one out Nick vonGersdorff singled up the middle and advanced to second on a ground out. Brandon Maupin walked and Paul Heilder then followed with a two-run double to left center field to put the Lancers up, 2-0.

Liberty knotted the score in the bottom of the inning. Patrick Gaillard (Jr., SS, Taylors, S.C.) doubled to left center field to lead off the inning. After a ground out, Phillip Laurent (Sr., LF, Cantrall, Illinois) hit a towering home run to right center field to tie the score at 2-2. It was the leftfielder’s second round-tripper of the season.

Miller (Sr., 3B, Wheat Ridge, Co.) would give Liberty a 3-2 advantage in the fifth inning by leading off the frame with his first home run of the season.

The Lancers tied it in the top of the eighth as Robert Bailey led off the inning with his first home run of the season.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Derek Bennion (r-Jr., RF, Snohomish, Wash.) walked with one out. The right fielder then stole second base and advanced to third on an overthrow of second by the Longwood catcher. Miller then hit a sharp single down the right field line to provide Liberty with the victory.

Flames’ starter Dane Beakler (Fr., RHP, York, Pa.) went 2 2/3 innings in his first collegiate start, allowing three hits and two runs while walking two. Ryan Page (So., LHP, Cranberry Twp., Pa.) followed and picked up his first win of the season with 6 1/3 innings of relief. The lefthander allowed one run on five hits and struck out one. The Lancers’ John Farrell took the loss in 1/3 inning of relief.

With the win, Liberty moves to 3-2 on the season, while Longwood drops to 3-4.

The Flames next travel up Route 460 to Farmville, Va. for a return match with the Lancers on Tuesday. First pitch at Lancer Stadium is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
