Former Liberty Baseball Player Tony Beasley Named To Washington Nationals Staff
January 13, 2006 · Washington, D.C.

Former Liberty Flames’ second baseman Tony Beasley has been named the third base coach for the Washington Nationals for the upcoming 2006 season in a joint announcement by Nationals Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden and manager Frank Robinson, Thursday afternoon.

Beasley, 39, joins the Washington staff having five highly successful seasons as a manager in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. All five season ended in postseason berths as Beasley fashioned a .590 winning percentage with the Pirates. For Pittsburgh, the former Liberty standout managed the Double-A Eastern League Altoona Curve to back-to-back playoff appearances. After leading the Curve to its first-ever trip to the Eastern League Championship in 2004, he was named Double- A Manager of the Year by Baseball America. Earlier in the season, he was selected as a coach for Major League Baseball’s Futures Game. He also managed at Single-A Hickory and Williamsport for the Pirates. In 2004, he managed Mesa of the Arizona Fall League to a first place finish.

A native of Fredericksburg, Va., Beasley was a member of the 1988 and 1989 Liberty Flames under head coach Al Worthington. A leadoff hitter, the second baseman was a catalyst for both Liberty teams. In 1989, he was named the team MVP after hitting .345 and stealing 24 bases. He was later drafted in the same year in the 19th round by the Baltimore Orioles. A current resident of Bowling Green, Va., Beasley hit .260 in eight minor league seasons as a middle infielder with Orioles and the Pirates organizations.

So after going onto Beckett.com, I wound up purchasing the standard-issue Topps cards, each one issued, for Sid Bream, Lee Guetterman and Randy Tomlin. (Every year since 1987, I've gotten the Topps complete set of cards. And until 1997-ish, I didn't take good care of them. I only get Topps, and none of this Topps-Gold-Finest-Refractors stuff). Standard issue.

I can only imagine the guy who's searching for these cards, saying "who the heck is spending 14 cents on a 1988 Guetterman?"

I'll post pictures when they come in. They shall forever find a spot in my Hall of Fame.

Yes, I'm 24 and collect baseball cards. No, I don't have a girlfriend.

(and even though I hate the Braves, I got an autographed, framed photo of El Sid's slide off of eBay). Long live LU.

I had a huge card collection back int he day. But someone broke into my house about 15 years ago and stole most of my good stuff including nealy completed Reds team sets from '55-'90. Not a day I care to relive. But it sort of took the fun out of it for me. On the positive side, the insurance company did give me a penny on the dollar for what was stolen (yes, I had an inventory).

Let me know what cards you are looking for. I have a lot of duplicates of the big 5 (Tomlin, Bream, Guetterman, Green, & Mcknight). I will be glad to help you guys out. JLMK

I noticed that Steve Baker made it to AA ball with the Padres last year, good for him. He's the only out of LU's 2002 draftees (the others being Keith Butler, John Schneider, Joey Monahan and Matt Hagen) still playing pro ball.
