Interesting Tyler Morris is the pick for freshman of the year. Congrats to those who were chosen.

Just for grins last year's picks:

We didn't get a lot of respect last year.

Somewhat related, Ashton Perrett is on the watch list for national stopper of the year. Of course he is slated to be a starter this year, but whoever does those lists had no way of knowing that.

Stopper isnt necessarily limited to relievers (although it is in this case). Be interesting to see how Lyons does as the closer, maybe he ends up on this list at some point in the season.

Have to admit I'm a little worried about Lyons in that role. Usually the closer/stopper has an out pitch. Marsh was given that role when Perritt struggled - he relied on a low 90s fastball and the palm ball. Perritt had the heater and the 12-6 curve. Lyons has . . . . ?

THat is a question mark to be sure. Hopefully he has worked on something in the offseason.

Don't forget that Lyons as a starter would be 86-90 with change up and slider as his out pitches. As a reliever, you are gonna have a lefty that will be 88-90 probably touch some 91s, and the off speed stuff is there. That would not really be a huge worry with him as a reliever.

My worries are not that he can be an effective reliever, he's already done that. You need a strikeout pitch to be an effective closer. Again I refer back to Perritt and Marsh (who went 3 months without giving up a run). I hope you're right and Toman has faith that this is where he can best help the team. Hopefully we can get a lot of CG from our starters.

Lyons struck out 55 batters in 63 innings last year. Pretty close to the same rate at Perritt, who struck out 28 in 29 innings. That was as a starter, where you have to pace yourself a bit and let your fielders do the work, whereas a closer is usually only going an inning and can go more for strikeouts.

Chippys point is valid. Lyons is def more of a contact pitcher. They both will have to adjust what they do. That being said we bring the closer in with 1 out in the 8th with a runner on 3rd needed a punchout. Not sure lyons is great for that but we will see.

Can anyone tell me why Tyler Morris, the BSC preseason FOY, is not even on the roster but is in street clothes sitting with the folks?

Back issues. I believe he may be forced to end his career.

That's a shame. Thanks.
