Game #23: Old Dominion

Time for round 2 with the Monarchs after the weather postponement with JMU. ODU won the first meeting 7-4 in Liberty's first modweek game of the season in Lynchburg. With the extra day, Lyons probably will get the ball for the Flames in this one, and ODU could send any one of four different pitchers to the bump to counter: Zach Sligh, Victor Diaz, Brett Harris or Greg Tomchick (all RHP). Liberty is looking to avoid the first sweep by ODU since 2009 (lost 2-1 in Norfolk and 7-2 in Lynchburg). Nick Pierce will have the call from the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex at 3 PM.

This is actually a very important game. We dont want to be swept and odu was in the top 50 rpi. If we can win 3 out of 4 this week or sweep i think we will be knocking on the door of the top 25. The schedule sets up favorably after today as most of our tough games are at home (outside unc and uva) including high point and coastal.

Pitchers are bringin it today on both sides...0-0 2 outs in the Liberty half of the 7th inning. The two teams have combined for 7 hits and 7 strikeouts.

Gone to the 9th...still 0-0. Lyons still going for Liberty and ODU on their 5th pitcher. 8 hits combined between the two teams

Performance of the year for the Liberty pitchers...headed to the top of the 13th 0-0. 6 strikeouts for Shawn Clowers in relief of Jared Lyons who put in a performance that if not for the score would have been a complete game with 5 strikeouts allowing just four hits.

It took 15 2/3 innings but Liberty FINALLY breaks through...1-0 2 outs in the 16th

Fulghum shuts em down and Liberty gets the win 1-0 in 16 innings (if not the longest game ever, certainly in the top 5)

According to LU Gameday on Twitter, this game tied for the longest in school history based on innings

Great win. Good to know we can still stay in a game if that bats aren't working.

Agreed...I'll defer to SJ for more detailed comments on the pitching but Clowers and Lyons were both absolutely dealing today. I havent seen us hold a team like that...well...ever. Lyons is probably done for the week but for his one appearance, it certainly was one of the best of the year.

With the win we jump to number 58 in the RPI. That was another nice road midweek win. We need our starters to go deep into the games this weekend and come away with atleast 2 to rest up fulghum lyons clowers perritt and marsh. Those guys have to be on fumes after the last week. Hopefully Stafford can come in and contribute as well

We may see a few new faces this weekend to spell those three (like Parks, Gray, Stafford as you mentioned jinxy and we may ever see some of the freshmen as well). Marsh hasnt pitched since last Saturday so he should be available this weekend as well.

Big win. Hopefully we can sweep High Point over the weekend. LU pitching is looking great.

Its a good win, but let's pump the brakes a bit. Lyons had his best outing of the year, but ODU, while a top 50 RPI team, isn't a South Carolina or Clemson or even Virginia. Where this win is most beneficial is in our record against in-state teams, which we have had a lot of trouble with over the years. Now, looking ahead, we get HPU at home this weekend which is a definite benefit so let's build on the good vibes and get a series win this weekend, and a sweep would certainly be excellent.

Odu was actually number 12 yesterday in the rpi before the loss. We have been receiving votes the last 2 weeks in the polls. High pt lost to nc a&t yesterday which is a bad bad loss. If we can sweep i think we crack the top 25. So far our only bad loss is ohio this year. You could argue north florida but there a 500 team this year. Duke had a strong sweep of notre dame over the weekend. If we can keep improving and stay healthy this will be our beat year yet
