At-large discussion

For those that are more connected to college baseball, could we realistically get an at-large this year? Is our schedule tough enough? Do we have enough opportunities for "statement wins"? What games are most important to our at-large chances? How many wins do we need?

At least 40 wins and a win over Coastal.

Win at UVa was a huge step. That's going to resonate later in the year.

Need at least one win over Coastal, if not two, since the series is at home.

Need to play well against St. John's, probably at least take two of those.

Toman said Bryant is a sneaky tough team as well.

Can't lose Big South series you're supposed to win, like two years ago at Asheville. You can lose a game or two against those teams, but not series.

No chance with even 4o wins. The SOS is bad... There are way to many teams and not enough spots. I hope we can just win the BS and be done with it. We have the talent to do so...

If Royer was the coach, this tune would be different.

We are obviously off to a better start than most anticipated. Hope we can continue. :D

That's not true... It's the facts.

Manson. Chris was spot on. We absolutely can but we cant have a bad couple week like last couple years. We still have unc. At least two games with jmu which usually is in contention to win the caa. St johns and coastal are the two huge series. Coastal seems beatable this year...uva smoked coastal with conway on the mound..of course the transitive theory is dangerous. Essentially we need to stay on schedule we cabt lose games to coppin state etc

If we lose to Coppin State it's over. There are many area HS teams that would give them a run for their money. You guys are all making my point - winning a bunch of games in NCAA baseball means so little - there are a lot of cards that still have to fall for us to get an "at large". I just don't think history is on our side here. We need to treat things like winning the BS or bust....

Just keep winning and the results will speak for itself.

So much depends on pitching depth when you have as little margin for error as we do. It is a positive that we have used as many arms in the early going and the coaches seem to have some level of confidence in more than just the top 3-4 guys.

Right now it is. But after we're done with OOC play it'll be way down.

We were boarderline at-large last year and came up on the outside. And that was with less then 40 wins and none of those quality. If we can get to 40 along with a couple Ws against Coastal we will be in the playing in June.

To put this quote into perspective... Coppin State just finished a 3 game series with Longwood down the road... they where outscored 30-6 in three games.

Since i'm stuck on stats tonight. Our SOS is REALLY bad right now. Of the 6 teams we have already played their win-loss record is a combined 15-27 UVA was the first team we have beaten that still has a winning record.

That's pretty nice company to be sharing space with in this poll.

Well, they were ranked 14th prior to losing to LU, Wright State and Seton Hall over the last week.

We really shook them up and destroyed their confidence. They may not recover. Or, they weren't that good to begin with.

The RPI is crazy right now. We're #112. Siena, who we took 3 of 4 from and is 1-10 overall, is #85.

Our opponents aren't helping us a whole lot. Richmond and Citadel have won several games and got above .500. As mentioned earlier uva looked weak this weekend. ODU, JMU, and St johns are all at or below .500 though St johns seems to turn it up late every year and sneak in. VT actually got 4 votes, that might be a bigger game. We just need to keep winning and control what we can control. Obviously we have a big game against number 7 UNC and 3 with CCu, just keep winning that's the bottom line. This is a big week for us with the additional game against the storm

though fun to speculate, its too early for this discussion. As Lang said we need to get two wins against St Johns and i think at least two in the Coastal series and not slip up in the rest of the big south. Dont kid yourself about UVA. Young team that lost its entire starting pitching staff but i think they will end up making the NCAA and that will help us as well in the end. This is the time of year where every team in the country is trying different lineups to see what works. We just need to keep winning and figure out our pitching staff and simply not slip up in games we should win.
