That's a home game. Could still be a bit nippy, but not as likely as in New York.

I will say this. I like the VT, JMU, & W&M home and home match ups. Going to Mercer early on will be a pretty big challenge. They have a lot of upperclassmen on that team, and a phenomenal SS. I'd say it's a pretty good schedule. Definitely stronger than last years. I don't like that we aren't going to be playing a big name top 25 team OOC

ECU could be that team but it's only game.

Are you serious right now? The reason for me saying that is because last year, I don't think our team was challenged enough during the season. We played a bunch of scrub teams, and when it came time to play a legit opponent in Coastal, we suck. If we play higher quality talent - as I pointed out this schedule has improved - then we will be better prepared for the better teams i.e. Coastal. That is in no way shape or form me crying about the schedule. Beej, seriously. How can you not agree with that? When you play poor competition, you play down to opponents. When you play legit/good competition, then you play up to that level of play. Sometimes, I don't get you Beej :dontgetit

Yeah, I'd like to have seen maybe a tournament or 2 where there's big name teams. Easy OOC series won't help as much...

Just when I saw the last part of your post pretty. my first thought was, "Good gravy, some people will never be happy huh?" I think we have some pretty decent competition on this schedule...yeah we arent playing the Rices and Texases and CSFs and UC Irvines and Clemsons and South Carolinas and LSUs of the world. If we had 5 Top 25 programs on the schedule, would you lament that we were taking a risk on our young players? (the roster this year has 26 players who are either a junior or senior so I wouldnt call this team young. If you think we could use a bigger challenge why dont you drop an email to the AD and let him know...its not like they dont listen to us here or anything...

I mentioned throughout my entire post how I liked the schedule, especially the instate match ups that could be some good games. I also like how all three "big name" opponents will be home and home this season. Last year I think we only played VT at their place, where we'll get the chance to hit 'em twice, once at our place. I think it would be good for our players to play some top 25 talent more frequently, but if you notice I mentioned just one game. Two years ago we went down to UNC and almost beat them with a fairly young team, while they were a top 5 team I believe. I don't see why playing UNC or another higher quality team that is in the top 25 would hurt us. This isn't football where our players have to worry about getting physically beat up. Let me also reiterate the fact that I am happy with this schedule.

VT won't be as good this year, they lost a lot to the draft this past year. That ECU game could be the big name team were looking at. There were top 10 team for the first month of the season last year. If tech is worse and ECU turns out not to be a top 25 team then this scheudle is actually probably weaker than last year. Basically replace Duke with MD for 2 games..weaker....VT is def gonna be worse...Mercer over KSU...better. I dont know that we werent' challenged last year, but we didn't win enough games that we should've. THe thing is we are going to be breaking in lot of new players (2b, 1b or C, CF, LF, 2 weekend starters). Looks like a lot of talent on paper on our roster but we will see this spring.

I thought you guys said we were playing 3 at South Carolina? 2012 maybe?

I'm disappointed in this years schedule. I would have liked to have seen more ACC, SEC, or Southern Conference teams this year. Just looks weaker to me this year than the past two or three years. :dontgetit

BJ - easy to act like he's whining, but it's true. No body isn't saying Toman isn't putting together a great team and will do great this year - but why is no one getting on the schedule like years past? This schedule would have been torn to shreds 4 years ago...

It's a weak schedule... That's a fact.

is this your new default reaction when people disagree slightly with anything athletics??

It is an easier schedule then in years past, that is fact...I don't think this poor guy was crying about anything

+1

BJ- You're the next big coach somewhere - let's be a little more creative in your comebacks!!! What would Knight do? Or Landry?

Look, its not a perfect schedule I know, but doggone it. I just want to see our boys go out and win, and hopefully finally get over the hump and win the conference. All this out of conference gobbledygook (a word my dad often used) only comes in if we were fighting for an at large spot, but that isn't what Im worried about right now. Heck Im in basketball mode at this point!

We have to fight for an at-large because there's no way we're going to beat Coastal in baseball.

Coach Toman thinks that if we get to a certain win total that we'll definitely get in. Last year we saw that we needed quality wins and we didn't have them.

Thanks BJ - you made my point. Same philosophy football is taking and IT'S NOT WORKING!! The problem with that strategy is that the people on the committee can read and they can see that we have 42 wins against weak competition. Quality wins are more important than padding the win category.

The problem with this schedule is that you can't survive bad losses, which is precisely what happened last year. Because of the lack of quality out-of-conference wins, losing two of three to Asheville and getting swept at Winthrop were magnified. I think LU will have to win at least 45 against this schedule to get an at-large look.

agreed lang. no midweek slip ups and no BSC losses to teams we should beat. stilll very curious on where forslund ends up as a starter or a closer.

Not only do the selection committee see this but so does the baseball community locally.

But weaker schedules to inflate win totals has been the JB way.

He definately doesn't make the baseball schedule. At many/most schools the AD is involved with the football schedule because of the $$ involved. That's usually about it.

Forslund has got to be a starter. If you have that kind of stuff you need to maximize his innings pitched and he could be the power starter that we have needed for several years.

Scheduling wise, I actually think this year's schedule is slightly better the more i look at it. I hear ECU is more than likely going to be a top 15 team when the polls come out just like last year. Also, Tech has more optimism around the program than i thougth after losing all those guys to the draft. Mercer looks like they will be rock solid again this year as well. We just can't lose those games to UNCA and High Point and were probably in last year. Same holds true this year.
