pro- I have not talked to toman about anything- he probably doesn't even know this forum exist! He is a baseball guy and all he is intersted in is winning ballgames, not what fans think, as they all have their own opinions. He is at LU to win ballgames, not to make every fan happy by playing their favorite player or son- you really get bent out of shape when something comes up about former staff. A little advise: GET OVER IT!!!! I am sure that he is doing the best with what he inherited. I have been to a few games and it is par as far as talent goes. I am sure that they are a great group and want to win, but the need for a winning attitude is evident. If I know coach that is what he is preaching that to them on the daily basis- you can tell that they have not experienced it that much. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out players and their make-up. He may be able to shift around some of them, but you can only hide them for so long-

Pro- it is possible to know baseball without talking to coaches, on any level. I base my opinions on what I see, not necessarily what I read and hear. I just understand the scholorship process more than most. I have been to games, and have seen the countless errors, and non-prodcution of the hitters. Every team goes through this, or at least most of them do- so don't take everything so personal. You need to have some fun!

ohama - I said nothing about former coaches, so I'm not sure what I'm being quick about. I'm defending those guys out there playing the game. These are the same guys that won 36 games last year and played a tougher schedule. Our players are not par - AG is a great player - yes, he's hurt, but he's still played in 22 of the 26 games / Garret Young was third in the Big South last year in hitting - BA of .359, 22 Xtra base hits, 46 RBI / Negron was 5th - BA of .354, only 18 SO and 15 SB / Keller was 16th - BA of .328 / Giammaresi - 5th in the league with 17 doubles / Umberger - Clearly one of the best pitchers in the Big South / Stokes 6th in the BSC last year in wins with 8 / Clarence Nicely - a transfer from Auburn who was successful there (before you dispute that - here is his line against your USC team in a 2 inning relief appearance in 05 - Clarence Nicely ........... 2.0 2 0 0 1 2 0 0 0 0 8 9 2 2 41.

I have posted the roster from this year and last (really 3 difference makers - Nanry, Gaillard and John, the only one that would have help the fielding problems would be Gaillard)- you will see there is not much difference in the roster of a 36 win team. The talent is there - you can argue that the talent is not as good as USC and the level of the SEC, but I can argue that the Big South is not the SEC.

2008 Roster:

I know a few coaches myself too ;) and players ;) I'm not saying you didn't know anything about the scholarship process, I was just explaining a common process at Liberty that you might not have been aware of. I'm not taking anything personal:) Just posting on a board - I thought you were supposed to have discussions in a forum? I'm having fun - just not to sure the players are, reading about how bad the talent on the field is, especially from a friend of Toman's. Just feel that they will not get better hearing that and I would like to see my friends on the field get their confidence back!

All right, this has all gone on far too long. In the interest of free speech I have tolerated way too much of this chatter. But it is time the forum grew up.

I can think of no compelling reason to be dragging Coach Royer's name through the mud by some on here while others do the same to Coach Toman. Coach Royer poured his heart into the school and the program and for that he has my respect. To kick a man while he is down is not only poor taste but against the foundations our school was built on. And to hammer on a new coach who is trying to shape the program into his image during some growing pains is just as bad. The honeymoon period by fans has seldom been shorter for a coach than what we've experienced recently.

I am asking ... no imploring everyone to stop the personal attacks of both men and each other immediately. I think I speak for many on here who dread coming into the baseball or mens hoops forums anymore. This place was built to be an outlet to discuss the Flames and not to drag people's reputations through the mud. Obviously this goes for the basketball talk as well. And is it too much to ask to keep the two topics separate?

I am not locking any threads right now because I believe deep down that we can be mature enough to act responsibly. Don't let me down.

thanks for the info but I could have saved you the effort as I picked up a Media Guide at one of the ballgames. the numbers look good on paper, but that is all they are, numbers. Until they go out and produce between the lines, nothing will change. As for my remark about former staff; I ahve only been on here a few months and it is quite obvious that you are a "roydun" lover. Get a life and move on. If you are so up on college athletics and all that goes on, you should know that resignations happen. The year is young, and they still may win 36 games. The point is not to just win 36 games, it is to win more than 40, so that if you can not win the conference tourney, you still have a shot at an outside bid. That, my sad friend, will not happen until LU plays better teams and can win, and boost its RPI. You do know what that is don't you?

Sly- accept my apologies. I do enjoy a discussion, but being the new kid on the block let them get the best of me. Evidently I joined the forum when there was much bitterness still around. I have no idea who royer or the MBB coach are and would not know them from Adam. Just a fan of the game and will sleep well tonight knowing that the others on the board will respect your request too- maybe.

A lot of the hitting problems are coming from adjusting to the way pitches pitch players and adjusting to new roles.

For example, last year Garrett Young had 8 home runs. This year he was asked to hit for more power. That's what his role was. For someone his size and as strong as he is, that's a legit role for him to be in. If you watch his stance this year compared to last year, it's different. Last year he was more spread out and went straight from A to C. This year, his stance is closed up a little, he's striding more, and he's going A-B-C instead of straight A-C. It's something he's adjusting to.

Another example would be Negron. Last year he was a slap hitter, get the ball on the ground, and beat it out. This year more teams are pitching him inside, and he's having trouble with that pitch. He's having to adjust to it.

Grijalva can hit, but he can't field to save his life. There was one game he gave up two runs simply because he couldn't make a decision quick enough. On one, with bases loaded, on a hard hit ball to him, he immediately turned to throw to second instead of going home for the force out. In the same game, he cut a ball from right field that was going home, and could've nailed the guy at second base but double pumped and made a bad throw.

Giammaresi can field as well, but he doesn't have much range at all at third base.

Negron's playing second because we don't have anyone else to play there.

Baseball's the sport where if you're mechanics are off by just a fraction, especially hitting, you're dead. It takes time, patience, and determination to fix that stuff. You've got to be mentally strong to overcome the slump and keep playing. We're going to see if our guys are.

That's what I was hoping for, Omaha. I do not want personal attacks on anyone on here no matter their allegiances. I think we all can get caught up in the heat of the moment from time to time. But let's do our best to take the high road.

Hey, I'm just trying to talk baseball. That's all my posts have been about. I'll talk baseball with myself if I have to. I'm the kid that drove two hours to a high school game last year that I have no stake in simply because a coach invited me.

It was a joke cwsfan3!! Read the other threads...it's an on-going joke. This is a great site. Not many college sites have as many members and post as much as we do. It gets heated once in a while, but for the most part it's alright. My biggest thing is that people are quick to anger on this site and take so many things personal, myself included.

I'm not trying to defend Royer or bash Toman - he is our coach and I support all coaches at Liberty. I have never met him, but he seems like a stand-up guy. And I happy to see the Administration starting to focus on Baseball and hope in the near future we can add on the the stadium, improve the practice facilities and Coach Toman can get some big time talent to commit. I wasn't trying to defend anyone, but the players - I have seen other teams and our guys have talent - and I hope we can pull this thing together this year and get a good run going in the Big South starting with UNCA.

Omaha and CWS - if I offended you in anyway - I apologize. It is just a game. And yes omaha, I know RPI means Real Power Indicator. :)

Good Post SuperJon - It has always bugged my about Grijalva too. That guy could make it at the next level if he just could figure out fielding. I thought he improve over time, but it seems like he loses confidence more and more each year. Don't get me wrong - I'm not playing either corner, but if i could hit like him - I would work my butt off to get better at it.

Oh don't worry...its a good weekend for you guys to be "pulling things together" -- even missing a few guys I think you'll be alright. Friday and Saturday arms for Asheville are excellent -- but it doesn't matter when your bullpen can't get an out, and you can't score. Should be interesting (and in case anyone didn't know...Friday gametime has been bumped up to 1pm).

The thing is, he has the physical skill. He just doesn't have the mental side of it. He takes too long to make a decision. The kid's a great player, he just seems to freeze at times. I was never a good player. I just wasn't. I've always known the game and known I was better on the coaching side than the playing side. I know what to do, I just don't have the talent to get it from my head to my hands. Grijalva has the talent, he just doesn't have the instincts right now.

You guys should think about getting Kenny George to play baseball - I would come see him play:) The bat would look like a toothpick and how would the ump call high strikes - he'd need a later.

You all have to remember that Garrett Young is playing with a partially torn labrum in his shoulder. There's no doubt that's effecting him at the plate and in the field. He just doesn't look like the same player he was last year, though he does appear to be coming around a little bit hitting wise.
