center fielder misjudged a hard line drive that hung in the air went over his head. gave up a run but thats not what did us in. oh well.
Thanks. Oh, man. He had a tough game. He was also 0-3 with 3 strikeouts. Hope we can bounce back tomorrow!

Another thing i was thinking is i dont like the way that the jobs just seemed to be handed to all these transfers. Jefferson and Richardson looked like viable guys last year when they got a chance. I mean I'm all for plugging a few guys in there but what does that say to our high school recruits. Hey come here, ride pine the first year or two then when it's your turn, we play all Juco's over you. I realize we have had a lot of succes with guys like Redal and Garrett Young but it seems like we've always just sprinkled in 2 to 3 a year. This year theres like 5 in the starting lineup and 2 or 3 more first out of the pen. Parmley and Rasmus look like they are going to help from today and teh scrimmages I saw.

Whats the word on Wimmer, how long is he out? I think were going to need some production at first. Sizemore has a huge hole in his swing.

I'm not positive but I think Wimmer is going to be out all year.

gotcha, man thats a big blow. i knew he had a significant injury because i saw him on crutches in a boot back in the fall but i didn't know what the extent was. Maybe I'm being too over critical just 1 game into the year, but does anyone else see a bit of a problem playing so many juco guys. I mean if they are the best we have then OK do it. I've seen enough of Jefferson and Richardson to know they can swing the stick.

I've never understood why Jefferson doesn't get many at bats. I really really like him. The dude knows how to hit a freakin baseball.

Ian Parmley had a great day at the plate today. He's listed as an outfielder. If he's got even an average glove I think I'd rather see him in left with Doug at first. It'd open us up to get another hitter in there at DH.

I dont see a huge problem with it...I mean today was just the first game and its not time to be like "ZOMG! WTF is he doing??? we are doomed to lose 60 games!!!" Parmley and Rasmus certainly showed they can contribute (and Parmley sounds like you could run him over with a tractor trailer and he's gonna want back in). we showed some flashes today but couldnt quite get the plays we needed when we needed (and couldnt quite get a few strikes when it mattered either). Sleep this one off and let's play two tomorrow...

I really like that with Parmley in the outfield and then maybe Jefferson at DH or matchup left vs. right.

agreed...i still think the right lefty situational matchups at this level is crazy. It's rarely even done in the minor leagues. There are a select few big leaguers that are wired to pinch hit well. I know from my playing days it's always tough (especially early in the year) to come off the pine cold and come in and get a hit. Both pinch hitters K in the ninth ahah. Take your chances wiht the guys you put in the starting 9.

No, BJ, we're not going to lose 60 games. Unfortunately though, with our schedule, we can only afford, at the very most, eight non-conference losses. We honestly need to only lose 5-6 non-conference games. We still have three more games with these guys, ECU, JMU (2), VT (2), and Rutgers. If we lose even one more game to Mercer then that's putting it where we have to sweep JMU, or sweep VT, or something along those lines. We have to win at least 41 games in the regular season to get to a regional. Because of that, every single game counts. There are very few opportunities for "good" wins and multiple opportunities for "bad" losses. We have to capitalize on every chance we have for a "good" win, and luckily we get three more chances against a good Mercer team.

Asked around to some people that know the baseball program better than I do and found out a few things:

Dane's had a minor arm injury. He wasn't going to pitch more than an inning yesterday no matter what. He was held out of fall ball and hasn't thrown much this spring so there's one reason for taking him out.

Parmley has had a minor arm injury as well, so that's why he's DHing. After jacking his finger up yesterday it's likely that he'll stay at the DH spot for a while.

Richardson's role has been defined as closer. He's not going to come into a tie game this early in the year.

SJ ,thanks. That explains the pitching. He was really trying to find a way to "piece together" an inning or two, hoping we could take the lead. Appreciate the info.

Not today. In the postgame interview, Coach Toman said he was fine. Hopefully, it didn't swell up over night. Kid had a nice game. I like that he is aggressive on the bases.
We need to win a couple of these games this weekend (understatement, I know).

he stayed in yesterday after he got hurt and got another hit afterwards, id say he'll be in there at DH. I figured that was what was wrong with Beakler. So if were going to hold true to the closer only situation Richardson will throw like 20 innings this year. If he's your stopper bring him when the games on the line even if it's teh 7th or 8th, these are big distinguishing games for us.

I get the feeling that down the line Richardson may come in the game in those situations but not this early in the season.

My thought was maybe McLeod in the 8th, but I don't know his status. Do you, SJ?

I was wrong about Parmley. He's starting in CF today even with the dislocated finger.
Good stuff! Thompson had a rough day yesterday for sure.
I'm going to basketball today, but I will be thinking baseball the whole time. That's "my" sport! I'm going to have to see if I can keep track via Blackberry; I'm not too great at doing that. I'd appreciate any updates you guys can provide.
