I'll bet they eventually go with Worthington Field name at _________ Stadium. Al Worthington's impact on LU athletics is tough to quantify. The man had a vision that fit perfectly with Doc's.

can someone down there explain what the green insulation board hanging from the roof over the upper deck is for?

JB confirming for the hundredth time that "yes, the entire infield is turf- no dirt except the pitchers' mound" (actually AstroTurfUSA Gameday Grass 3D52H. whatever that means)

concourse looks good too...

next up... seats, fence, batters eye- they may just make it

My guess is that the green insulation board will be used between the roof and the box's below. It will be pulled back into place when the press box and other boxes are finished and will insulate the space between the ceiling and the roof.

Astro-Turf wrote:From a performance standpoint, the make-up of the AstroTurf GameDay Grass 3D52H system stands out. This surface features the all new Horseshoe fiber. This new fiber is enjoying unprecedented success in the sports field marketplace, due to factors such as its unique shape. The fiber’s horseshoe shape features two end columns with a thicker diameter. The design imparts mechanical memory so that the fiber remains upright longer, unlike other fields whose fibers quickly flatten and split or shred at the spine. The Horseshoe fiber continues to spring back to its original configuration, even after years of heavy foot traffic or exposure to ultra-violet radiation.

The field also has a face weight of 52 ounces of fiber per square yard, one of the highest in the industry. This adds to the durability provided by the fiber shape.

The Horseshoe fiber’s shape also allows it to reflect light and heat away from the surface. That, in combination with AstroFlect heat reduction technology, can lower surface temperatures by as much as 18%.

The field also features a texturized nylon RootZone. The patented RootZone acts as a thatch layer that encapsulates the rubber infill to provide minimal rubber splash, uniform traction, and better shock absorbency.

Easy--don't wear a skirt! :nono
Is this field hockey or baseball. If it's baseball there's no skirts or crying in baseball.

nice article, video and stills here. The video has some stills which really make the whole athletic complex look shweet. The rendering showing the 'bill in the background is the first I've seen showing the completed upper deck/suites on the student side. It makes me feel kinda funny, like when we used to climb the rope in gym class.

PS: LUAD JB affirming we WILL be in the new park for PSU

How does the batter's box work with no dirt? That doesn't seem like a good idea.

I talked to a couple former minor league players and a former major league trainer the other day and mentioned Liberty's new field. They didn't believe me when I said that there was going to be a rug infield. Some of the questions I tried to field based on the information gathered I gathered in this thread (I know...): "No dirt? I don't get it. How do you play baseball on carpet? What about sliding? What about digging in at the plate? What happens when it gets wet? How do you practice for actual baseball games on actual baseball fields when you are playing on plastic every day?"

The conversation ended with both of the former players saying there was no way they would have ever gone to a school with a field like ours.

Maybe they are just old farts (in their mid-late 30s) that don't understand the benefits of the technology. On the other hand, could this have a negative effect on recruiting?

I talked to one of the SIDs at the basketball game tonight and quite a few schools in state actually have turf fields. UVa apparently just put one in, JMU had one last year and apparently Maryland had a synthetic mound as well.

Chippy/01Grad: I had the same thoughts but spent @ 1/2 hr on Google checking all the schools that went w/ it, incl Vanderbilt, Texas, Wichita St, and tons of northern schools (for obvious reasons)

Illinois, Indiana, Ohio St, Oregon St, Rutgers, Kansas, K-State, not to mention VA Tech, JMU, Duke, and Wake Forest. All schools that could afford grass if they wanted to.

Color me as surprised as everyone else- wave of the future I guess.
