I dont want to speak for Fumble but I'm pretty sure he was saying that the ATHLETE'S need to be big boys and not complain when they dont get their playing time
Fumblerooskies wrote:This is Big Boy baseball, now, and those who sons are not getting the PT are just going to have to deal with it
I agree, every team has people on the bench but you dont find them rising up against their coach...you can still respect someone while not being happy with your playing time...there still is one sport though that this seems to be a problem and hopefully it'll be addressed at some point

I agree that the team has had some players in the past that have gone above and beyond to complain about playing time and they should know why they arent playing. At the same time, this problem might be avoided since it seems that toman has established a good communication line with his players and hopefully each player will KNOW their role when the season starts. A team rising against its coach is an automatic recipe for disaster. I just hope that since we now have a clean slate, we can avoid the problems that we have faced in the past.

HMO hit it on the head. Perhaps my words were ill-chosen, but I did not mean to insinuate it was not big boy ball under Royer.

The players (and parents) have to realize that college baseball is NOT (or not supposed to be) about the politics that permeate HS and wreck ball.

I agree with some of Flameshaw's comment about a stadium not necessarily bringing in better teams. It will take the LU Baseball Program building a better reputation of getting to regionals and winning more big games to get the big boys to grace the burg with their presence. Although with Toman's contacts in the SEC and ACC he may be able to beg some of his colleagues to come to town. I would love to see Jack Leggett and the entire Clemson squad sitting in that tiny visitors dugout again.

It would be neat to see Toman have to wait a few years for that stadium to see if he can elevate the program to greater heights. He should be able to do that with a bigger and better budget. Although baseball had a pretty decent budget before, I hear it is much better now.

On another note, does anyone know if we have signed any good pitchers for next year? I've only seen position players. After this season the Flames will lose Page and Stokes, who will most likely get a lot of innings this season. Also has anyone heard how Clarence Nicely has been throwing this Fall?

Building a stadium and facility upgrades are directly tied with being able to bring in high caliber players.

While I tend to agree, we had an article linked somewhere on here not too long ago that talked about Toman's ability to recruit in spite of horrible facilities at both NCSU and South Carolina.

Nice facilities help the recruiting process, but as El Scorcho pointed out, it takes a dynamic coach who can connect with recruits. Chances are if we sign a blue chip type player he also will have several other good schools with the same or better facilities to choose from. The most important aspect of recruiting, in my opinion, is a head coach who can connect with players and sell the dream of playing D-1 college baseball.

I am the one that helped put together the tournament at Southern Miss ... It was done with Coach Royer ... Southern Miss has some of the best facilities and definately the best playing field surface in the country ... Their crowds are as good as anyones in the country ... I just wanted to introduce my alma mater to big time baseball in the south and maybe they can take some of the ideas back with them in order to produce the same kind of atmosphere and fan involvement that they have there.

It also will help the strength of schedule beccause Southern Miss has been to the NCAA Tournament for five straight years and is a very good baseball program that will make it to Omaha in the near future ... They just put 12 new suites and a new press box in their stadium ... Too bad I am not there anymore to get to see my alma mater play ...
