That's a good old fashioned heinie whupping. :flamethrower

I do have a question, though. Looking at the box the starting pitcher for LU (Stokes) only went 4 IP...
...yet got credit for the win. I thought the starter had to go five to get credit for the win.

May be, Sly...
...but it is contrary to Official Rules of Baseball:
WINNING AND LOSING PITCHER
10.19
(a) Credit the starting pitcher with a game won only if he has pitched at least five complete innings and his team not only is in the lead when he is replaced but remains in the lead the remainder of the game.
(b)The “must pitch five complete innings” rule in respect to the starting pitcher shall be in effect for all games of six or more innings. In a five-inning game, credit the starting pitcher with a game won if he has pitched at least four complete innings and his team not only is in the lead when he is replaced but remains in the lead the remainder of the game.
(c)When the starting pitcher cannot be credited with the victory because of the provisions of 10.19(a) or (b) and more than one relief pitcher is used, the victory shall be awarded on the following basis:
(1) When, during the tenure of the starting pitcher, the winning team assumes the lead and maintains it to the finish of the game, credit the victory to the relief pitcher judged by the scorer to have been the most effective;

The NCAA Scoring Rules...
NCAA - Winning and Losing Pitchers
SECTION 25.
a. For all games of eight or more innings, a starting pitcher must pitch at least five complete innings to receive credit as the winning pitcher. For all games of fewer than eight innings, the starting pitcher must pitch at least four innings to get credit for the win. Additionally, the winning pitcher’s team must be in the lead when he is replaced and must remain in the lead for the rest of the game.
b. If the starting pitcher does not pitch enough innings, the win is credited to a relief pitcher in the following manner:
(1) The winning relief pitcher shall be the one who is the pitcher of record when his team goes ahead and remains ahead throughout the remainder of the game. No pitcher may receive credit for a victory if the opposing team ties the score or goes ahead after he has left the game.
Note: Whenever the score is tied, the game becomes a new contest insofar as the
winning and losing pitchers are concerned.
Exception—If a relief pitcher conforms to the above regulations but pitches briefly and ineffectively, the scorer should not credit him with a win. If a succeeding relief pitcher pitches effectively and helps maintain the lead, the scorer should award the win to that succeeding pitcher.
(2) By prearrangement, if three or more pitchers are to be used, the pitcher of record shall be considered the winning pitcher.
c. When a batter or runner is substituted for a pitcher, all runs scored by his team during that inning are to his credit in determining the pitcher of record.
d. The starting pitcher shall be charged with the loss if he is replaced at any time while his team is behind and remains behind for the remainder of the game. Similarly, any relief pitcher who is the pitcher of record when the opposing team assumes the lead and never relinquishes it is charged with the loss.
Note: The pitcher of record shall be the one who is in the game at the time the winning team gains the lead, provided that the lead never is relinquished, or the one who is charged with the runs by which the opposing team takes the lead, provided that the lead never is relinquished.
e. To receive credit for a shutout, the pitcher must pitch the entire game or enter the game with no outs in the first inning and pitch the rest of the game without any runs scoring.

Hey Knobody, Nice left-handed compliment. Exactly who were the weaker teams (plural)? East Carolina-numerous regional appearances in the last 10 years. South Carolina- currently #1 in the country. Citadel- beat USC yesterday, rpi of 70 last year and a very good team. Richmond- Seem to be down a bit the last couple of years but I believe they've handled us quite well over the long haul. Don't give me the "no surprise they did well against the weaker teams though" crap. 28 hits and 28 runs is a great day, I don't care who is pitching.

What in the world are you talking about?

He said it's no surprise that we did good against the weaker teams, meaning the team not ranked #1. He was not saying they are weak teams. The word "weaker" was in context of the #1 team in the nation.

SuperJon. You have to be a little understanding here. Guest was just waiting for someone to start ragging on the schedule. And it did sound like knobody was saying that we beat the weaker competition. I do agree with guest, there was tough competition out there every game, but maybe Richmond. But in the past - Richmond has been a tough team.

I think it's time to get excited about where our program is going. Barber needs to step up and give a Royer a long term contract to make sure the program continues to get better without all the stupid distractions.

I'm not sure I've ever seen that many runs in ANY college/semi-pro/pro game. Ever. That's nuts.

SCAR will correct me if I'm wrong but our Phillies won a marathon inning game 26-24 or something like that way back when (late 70's or early 80's I think)

something like 14, 15 or 16 innings or something.

gotta look that one up though to be sure.

ok. I'm right after all.

1979, Philly vs. the Cubs :!: at Wrigley

and we won in 10 innings, 23-22, behind Randy Lerch's pitching and Michael Jack Schmidts heroic hitting.

Aren't we getting a little thin skinned? or should I say paranoid. Let's keep things in context. Did you or did you not play the #1 team in the country on Friday? No one is saying nor implying that they(Citadel and Richmond) are weaker teams, they are weaker though in comparison to USC's program history. They have great program historys' in fact their success on the baseball field in their history has been better than Liberty's. You and the other coaches need to let it go. The game is played on the field not on a schedule card. Maybe I should have said in my comments" weaker teams in the tournament" would that have made you sleep better at night? Obviously, in the game of baseball the team that pitches well and plays well can beat anyone on any day. You coaches should concentrate on developing your players to be better so that when they beat teams it will be because they were weaker. Stop being so paranoid. The team played a great game on Saturday to defeat Citadel and then turned around and beat the heck out of Richmond on Sunday. Let people believe that the schedule is weak. Maybe (hopefully) it is, because Liberty is so much better(on that particular day, to keep things in context) in comparison than they are.- weaker - I appreciate your comment about the left-handed comliment since it gives me the opportunity to try to think like a lefthander. If I was left handed then that would put me in my right mind and if I am thinking in my right mind then it shows that I am concerned about my "weaker" brother and setting him straight in his own thinking.

proto, you still don't get it. I'm pretty sure there will be no contract. Don't make false statements that will only result in creating panic. :P

Yea, coaches who turn their best starting pitcher into a reliever deserve longterm extensions.

proto, ha hah ha, thats just your stlye.. a little clarification never hurt anyone. As such in this case to use your own words "to stop all this stupid distractions". "Guest" obviously has some self conscious issues and clarification only helps to avoid your stupid distractions. Moving trucks go beep beep beep beep too. No contract

Smoltz, Gagne, Woods, PAGE?

First off, the only one that has anything in common with Page is Kerry Wood.

The other two weren't overpitched to the point they hurt their arm before moving to the bullpen. Kerry Wood was. He was at least allowed to try to prove himself as a starter again after he got healthy.

I am a former alum who is very very close friends with Sid, Lee, Richard and many others who played with, and know the MAN Coach Royer is. He is the right man to lead Liberty. He makes tough decisions, teaches the game, doesn't allow for excuses. I ( we ) do not appreciate the spirit, tone, AND lies that have been circulated on this thread in the name of " so-called " free speech. The coaches have families ! It is high time this foolishness stops ! If it doesn't...I'll go to Dr. Falwell myself and lay out why this whole site should be shut down. It is a smear against Christ and every good thing that LU stands for.

I hate to even respond to that, to provoke the wrath of The Judge, but this site is not owned by Liberty. Nor is it endorsed in anyway by Liberty. There's even a neat disclaimer at the bottom.
