I got to watch both games today. Couple things stand out
-whoever we put on the mound seems to deliver. Bankemper who had been roughed up most of the year was nasty in the first 2 innings of relief with his 3 quarters delivery and 90 mph to go along with a slurve. Lambert with the save then brooks roy who had barely pitched. I mean storm just puts in someone and they are effective.
-a lot of this is due to our defense. This is hands down teh best defensive liberty team I've seen since I've followed the program (since 2003). Andy Smith is unbelievable, the Johnnies hit 10 balls that a mediocore CF wouldn't have caught today. He also hit the go ahead HR and is a force on the base paths. This guy has been nails. The OF defense is amazing and the infield D is just as good, they just make all the plays there supposed to. Trey threw out 3 or 4 runners today including 2 stirke em out throw em outs.
-we continue to get just enough timely hitting, not much power but we put so much pressure on the opposition because we work the count, draw walks, and we almost never strike out. We executed two great hit and runs through the first base hole that were just beautiful. This team can beat you in a lot of ways
-The only negative is that we continued to have some late inning meltdowns on teh basepaths. We have got to be smarter as we ran ourselves out of a HUGE inning in the 8th.
As far as the competition and making so many errors. We faced 2 starters throwing 95 MPH plus in this series and a lefty with major league off speed stuff, and another low 90's righty out of the pen. Baltz is an animal at the plate, that guy just feels like Barry Bonds is up every time, we couldn't get him out. Some of these errors are just bad baseball, but we force a ton by this style of play were able to play. Also, the shadows were rough today and our baserunners screened their SS a couple times on ground balls that he booted. He airmailed a couple trying to beat parmley and smith's speed and he also just flat out booted a couple.
Finally, and most importantly, you can see a confidence growing in this team that they can get the job done and there is no panic in these guys. I think Coastal is going to get a rude awakening this year, these guys aren't intimidated by anything so far.
