I can't believe Toman has actually been holding Perrett out of save situations because of defensive concerns in CF. The odds are low that in a given inning a ball will even be hit to CF, and the vast majority of those that are hit there will be routine fly balls or base hits that any decent OF can handle. If you make a guy your closer, you are saying he is your most dominant pitcher in a one inning, end of game situation. On the mound, he is a factor on every pitch. In CF, the difference in defensive skill between him and Roberts (or whoever else we put out there) will be a factor maybe once a year if that.

I would guess Lambert if he can? Winthrop at home has to be the tougher of the two games we could play, right?

Both games would be against Winthrop today. Bean is obviously available as well. My guess is Lambert first game, Bean second, Wholestaff tomorrow.

If Trey can get us into that second game today, I look for Bean to come back and pitch well. My guess is last night was nerves. He had the same problem against Clemson, but Toman stuck with him and he settled down. This time he gave him the early hook, and I'm sure did it knowing he could come back with him and he would be ready to go both physically and emotionally.

How about the year Shawn Clowers is having? 9-0 without starting a game, .158 opponents BA, .089 ERA and almost a strikeout an inning.

Couple of notes:

1. Roberts struggled to even catch routine fly balls early in the year. So did Jake Kimble. That plus the emergence of Matt Marsh as a more than reasonable backup option meant he stuck with Perritt in center field in some games. Obviously he had no such choice Friday.

2. Toman wasn't sure who would pitch today, but he may not use Lambert at all. I think the coaching staff finally believes they've got an at-large bid sewed up, something I don't think they believed until after last night's win. (Even though the national folk think they're a slam dunk at this point.) He's got to start thinking ahead to next week, and I'm not sure he wants to run Lambert out on three days rest again if he can help it. Bean is an option. Heck, Fulghum is an option today. As is Matt Pennington. If you hold Lambert, he can go Sunday if necessary and then be on regular rest for the first day of regionals on Friday.

I understand that Roberts struggled defensively earlier in the year, but you are talking about a position where in the 9th inning there is about a 90% chance they will not even have a ball hit to them whereas the pitcher is a factor on every pitch. Yes, Marsh has done well, but Perrett is your stud, and to be at his best he needs regular work. Between Toman's CF paranoia and the number of blowouts we had during our hot stretch midseason, he had a couple of 10 plus day stretches when he didn't throw a pitch. IMHO he should have at least 5 or 6 more saves this year and be in the thick of it for national closer of the year. Besides coming in with Marsh a few times, Toman has also stayed with starters or long relievers into the 9th when most managers would have a top closer like Ashton in there. Hopefully the play Roberts made last night will give Toman more confidence in him.

It's an interesting discussion point, and I'm not defending either side of it, really. Just trying to throw the info out there. I don't think there's any hesitation now with the Roberts/Perritt switch. But it took Toman a little while to get there.

Twice a year. He misplayed one at the wall and one when coming in diving for a ball (he didn't have to diver for) and the ball hitting him on the head.

Plus Perrit's had ankle problems which could lead to mechanical problems and the potential for arm/shoulder injury.

Lastly, Marsh has been more consistent than Perrit in finding the strike zone.

As for who goes today, Bean only got 4 outs yesterday so frankly he got a really bad side session yesterday so why not give him another crack at it today and save Lambert for a possible championship game appearance. didn't Fulghum pitch the if necessary game last year against Coastal?

That may be a stretch, but I certainly think you can argue that no pitcher in the NCAA has done a better job in the role of long reliever.

I don't even think LFSN should be compared to rest of the BSC schools. The camera work and on-air talent is more like a regional sports network.

Yacyk and perritt proving why ive begged for them to remain in the lineup. Tray has a ton of talent and i think he will be a player for us but he struggled defensively several times. The ball will find the weak spot a lot and perritt throws so hard that when they do square it up it makes some tough plays. A healthy and effective lyons will make a huge difference for us.
