I think Eller is the only real freshman you mentioned. All the rest you need to add a year... our athletic department is sloooooow about updating the baseball site or any part of the athletic site for that matter.

Thanks for giving us the heads up and for coming over to our board.

For all of the talk about how weak our schedule is this spring, we do have to win the games we have lined up. And that's starts Friday.

You're right, Sly. I think we (I) have beat that dead horse of a schedule long enough. The schedule is what it is and now it's SHOWTIME. Good luck to the Flames this weekend. So far, the conference is off to a good start, with High Point defeating Dook, yesterday.

Thanks for the warning. That front just passed through here in Houston this afternoon and it is a powerful one.

Anybody heard anything from Spartanburg about how the game is going today?

Solbach and Thompson Combine To Pitch Flames Past Wofford In Season Opener

February 10, 2006 · Spartanburg, S.C/

Liberty’s Michael Solbach and Phillip Thompson combined to throw a two-hitter to lead the Flames to a 4-1 win over Wofford, Friday evening at Russell C. King Field in Liberty’s season opener.

Solbach (R-So., RHP, Woodbridge, Va.) scattered two hits through the first five innings and struck out five to go 1-0 on the season, Thompson (Sr., RHP, Ringgold, Va.) threw four innings of hitless relief to earn his first save of the season.

Michael Just (Sr., 2B, Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) staked the Flames to a 1-0 lead when he led off the game with a home run over the left field wall.

Liberty then added a solo run in the second inning as Chad Miller (Sr. 3B, Wheat Ridge, Colo.) walked, stole second, and then scored on an overthrow when he attempted to steal third.

Wofford cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning as Brandon Waring drew a one-out walk and scored from first on a double down the left field line by Adam Wood.

The Flames extended their led in the fifth when Aaron Grijalva (R-So., 1B, Redlands, Calif.) opened the inning by reaching on an error. He stole second and moved to third on a single by Phillip Laurent (Sr., LF, Cantrall, Ill.) before scoring on a suicide squeeze by P. K. Keller (So., CF, St. Petersburg, Fla.).

Liberty’s added an additional run in the eighth inning as a walk, a single by Errol Hollinger (Fr., C, Uplands, Calif.) and an infield ground out by Just.

Besides Wood’s RBI double in the fourth, Wofford’s only other hit was a leadoff single by Zach Pittman to start the fifth. But he was wiped out by a fielder’s choice on the next play.

Austin Redwine (0-1) took the loss for the Terriers. He allowed five hits in five innings while striking out seven.

The Flames begin the season 1-0, while Wofford falls to 2-2.

Liberty continues its season-opening weekend series with Wofford again tomorrow afternoon. The first pitch for tomorrow’s contest has been moved to 3 p.m. due to expected thunder storms in the Spartanburg area. The two teams will then conclude the series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Liberty wins the 2nd game of the doubleheader 4-3 on an unearned run in the 7th.

Grijalva is a lot faster than I thought he would be and Laurent is just a machine at the plate.

Well--it ain't two out of three against Auburn, but it's a good start to the season. Hope the snow clears enough for the games this week. VCU should be a good test.

All things considered, not a bad opening weekend.

As for clearing the snow, I'm guessing you can't use a snow plow or it would tear up the turf.

Flames Split Doubleheader With Terriers
February 12, 2006 · Spartanburg, S.C.

Wofford and Liberty split a doubleheader on Sunday at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers took the opener 5-4 while the Flames claimed the nightcap 4-3.

In the opening game, Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Aaron Grijalva (R-So., 1B, Redlands, Calif.) hit a solo home run, his first of the season.

Wofford scored four times in the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead with a three-run home run by Brandon Waring capping off the inning.

Liberty knotted the score with three runs in the eighth inning. P.K. Keller (So., CF, St. Petersburg, Fla.) singled with the bases loaded to score a run the first run of the inning and Patrick Gaillard (Jr., SS, Taylors, S.C.) hit a one out, two-run home, his first of the season, tying the game at 4-4.

The Terriers take back the lead and hold onto win the game in the bottom of the eighth when Stephen Johnson doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a one out RBI single by Shane Kirkley.

Starter Charles Vartanian went seven innings for the Terriers, scattering five hits and striking out seven. Whit Kennedy claimed the win, coming on in the eighth and pitching two thirds of an inning to garner his first collegiate victory. The Flames’ starter Ryan Page pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out four and walking one. Dustin Umberger (Fr., RHP, Hummelstown, Pa.) took the loss in relief of Page. He worked two innings allowing two runs on four hits. Tim John (Jr., RHP, Linwood, N.J.) finished the game by recording the last two outs of the eighth inning, striking out one.

In the nightcap, Liberty’s Phillip Laurent (Sr., LF, Cantrall, Ill.) staked the Flames to a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the first inning. The blast was his first of the season.

Wofford went ahead 3-2 in the third inning on three consecutive doubles by Kirkley, Waring and Adam Wood.

The Flames tied the game in the fourth inning on a solo homer by Errol Hollinger (Fr., C, Upland, Calif.), the first of his collegiate career.

The Flames pushed across the winning run in the top of the seventh inning as Grijalva reached on an error, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Gaillard.

Liberty’s Tim John was credited with his first win, yielding just two hits over four innings of relief while striking out three. Phillip Thompson pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season. Whit Kennedy took the loss for the Terriers, giving up the unearned run in the seventh inning to even his record at 1-1.

With the split, Liberty opens the season with a 2-1 mark, while Wofford stands at 3-3 on the season.

The Flames return to Lynchburg for their home opener on Tuesday as they host Longwood. First pitch at Worthington Stadium is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
