Went to see the Senators play last night. Got to spend some time with Tony and Randy Tomlin before the game. Hands down two of my favorite people. I dont like making guarantees but I truly believe he'll be a big league manager in his lifetime. He's already a very hot name in baseball and has played every roll well...ball player, bench coach, manager, 3rd base coach, etc etc.
He some how manages to run a tight ship but still have an amazing relationship with his players. They dont look at him as a Bible thumper or anything like that....just simply follow in line because they respect him. When he was our manager here in Lynchburg I did not hear any blatant curse words in the clubhouse from the music to the players talking. The next year (when he was not our manager because he went to AA) I heard more in 1 day then I did the entire previous season.
That doesnt result in wins and losses but I am a firm believer that having a solid structure (regardless if it's faith based or just rules) leads to success. I was talking with a players wife during the game and asked her what her husband thought of the coach's (he was a pitcher so he'd have a opinion on both). She said her husband has played 11 years professional baseball with several organizations and these two were his favorites because they get the game but also observe things that nobody else has ever observed and sometimes beyond baseball.
I think they have found the formula of showing true concern for their profession but also taking genuine interest in their lives beyond baseball. I suppose it's their faith coming through in their actions.
Oh and Tony has a son that's a Jr and has already received letters from Miami, UNC, Georgetown and a few other schools. He hasnt had much communication with Liberty yet but I'm sure that will soon change....I think it's just been a timing issue not lack of effort. He loves Liberty though and would love to come here I believe.
