Right now, Jason has given up three runs in ten innings. There is one spot left in the rotation, and it looks as if five players are gunning for that one spot:

- Philip Humber, who you may remember was traded to the Twins in the Johan Santana deal. He is out of minor league options, so if he doesn't make the team he'll have to go on waivers (and some other team will pick him up). My bet is Humber will be traded.

- Sean Henn, a former teammate of Jason's in Trenton, and a former Yankee. I bet he'll be sent to the minors.

- Brian Duensing, a AAA pitcher drafted by the Twins, and is sporting a 0.90 ERA this spring. Duensing will be in the majors soon, but there just isn't a spot for him yet.

- R. A. Dickey, a former major leaguer who has reinvented himself as a knuckleballer. He's having an excellent spring -- I just question the wisdom of having a knuckleballer in for long relief. If you need to put out a fire -- why are you bringing in a knuckleballer?

- Jason Jones, a decent resume. But I don't see him on the opening day roster. He'll be offered back to the Yanks or traded.

And then there is the most likely option... No one gets the spot. The Twins go with 14 hitters and 11 pitchers (five starters, six relievers) for the first part of the season while they recover from Joe Mauer's injury.

Jason Jones will be staying in the Minnesota Twins organization.

The Twins acquired the right-hander in a trade with the New York Yankees on Saturday, dealing Charles Nolte, a right-handed reliever at Class A Beloit, for the right to keep Jones.

The right-hander was the Twins' lone selection in last winter's Rule 5 draft, but the Yankees were allowed to reclaim the pitcher if he didn't remain on the Twins' 25-man roster all season. Rather than exercise that right, since Jones is not expected to break camp with Minnesota, the Yankees agreed to take Nolte instead.

Jones, who has posted a 2.70 ERA in seven spring appearances, will join the starting rotation at Class AAA Rochester once the season begins.

Jones to start Red Wings AAA opener against Syracuse...

"Newcomer Jason Jones will be the Rochester Red Wings’ starting pitcher in Thursday’s International League opener at Syracuse, with fellow right-hander Anthony Swarzak getting the start in Saturday’s Frontier Field opener against the Chiefs."

no mention of his college career but good progress none the less for a fellow former Flame

Mediocre outing for Jason. Four innings pitched (minor league teams won't stretch its pitchers, especially early in the season), and gave up a two-run homer. His team won, but he didn't pick up the W. 4 K's, 3 BB.

Just an update on Jason:

He's 0-3 with a 4.44 ERA in AAA right now. But, he's pitched into the seventh inning in his last two outings and given up only two runs.

I still have not gotten out to see Jason pitch this summer but i can try to post some pics once i get out. Saturday night he got the start but no decision, seems to be the trend so far this year. Would've been there Saturday but a nasty storm came in off the lake with sideways rain-mist, 45 degree temps, and about 30 mph sustained winds obviously not the ideal conditions to pitch in.

Just an update, JJ's really been struggling this season. He gave up seven runs in three innings in his last outing, and is currently sporting a 1-5 record with a 6.50+ ERA. Batters are hitting .332 against him.

It seems as if his new organization tinkered with him, and now he can't get anyone out. Hopefully, he'll right the ship... or the road to the majors will fall short.

Richmond Times-Dispatch wrote:Squirrels burned by former Flames pitcher

A couple of former Liberty University pitchers conspired to ground the Richmond Flying Squirrels last night.
Harrisburg pitching coach Randy Tomlin, an ex-Flames lefty, recommended Jason Jones last week when the Washington Nationals considered signing the ex-LU righty.
Jones was pitching for Pensacola Pelicans of the American Association, an independent league.
In his six innings, Jones limited the Squirrels to four hits, all singles. Richmond, which fell 5-1 before 3,433 at The Diamond, has lost 13 of its last 18. Run production has been a major issue, with 27 runs in those 13 defeats.
Tomlin, part of the Pittsburgh Pirates rotation in the early 1990s, was Liberty's pitching coach for nine years before joining the Washington organization in 2007.
"He's a guy I spent four years with back in college. He knows my delivery, got me right the first time, in college," Jones said of Tomlin. "I give him a lot of credit for the success of my career. I owe a lot to him.

Allentown (PA) Morning Call wrote:Brown breaks up no-hit bid by Chiefs' Jones
The right-hander comes within four outs of a perfect game in Chiefs' 7-0 win at Coca-Cola Park.

July 02, 2010|By Jeff Schuler, OF THE MORNING CALL

For 7 1/3 innings, 22 IronPigs batters, Syracuse's Jason Jones had been perfect.

So as Domonic Brown stood in the on-deck circle watching Cody Ransom try to break up Jones' perfect game bid, the young Phillies prospect had just one thought in mind.

"I'm thinking, if Ransom doesn't get the job done, I need to break this up. It's gone on a little too long," Brown said.

Brown got that chance when Ransom became Jones' 23rd straight victim, going down on strikes.

Two pitches later, however, Jones' bid for history was over. Brown broke up the perfect game with a single back through the box, one of just two hits for Lehigh Valley in a 7-0 loss to the Chiefs before another capacity crowd of 10,000.

Jones (1-2), who began the year in the independent American Association after being released by Minnesota in March, was bidding for the fifth perfect nine-inning perfect game in International League history and first no-hitter for Syracuse in 39 years.

"I kind of knew I was pitching well, but in the eighth, when we had that long inning, it kind of hit me, and I started thinking about it a little bit — and not thinking about it," said the 27-year-old right-hander, a fourth-round pick of the Yankees in 2004 who played for former Kutztown University coach Matt Royer at Liberty University. "Getting ready to bat kind of helped out [Jones was on deck when the inning, which saw the Chiefs double their lead to 6-0, ended], trying to focus on the pitcher, kind of helped out a little bit."

Trenton Thunder starting pitcher Jason Jones works in the top of the second inning against the Akron Aeros in a baseball games played at Waterfront Park in Trenton on Sunday, June 03, 2007. Jones, a graduate of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, pitched 6 innings.

TRENTON - The last time Jason Jones was in Mercer County Waterfront Park, he induced a fly out to center that secured the Thunder's second consecutive Eastern League Championship.

"When I walked out today, I remembered the big dogpile and everybody cheering. It was a great experience," Jones said before last night's game against the Harrisburg Senators.

That was 23 months ago, in September 2008. But the way things have gone for Jones lately, it may seem like 23 years.
