Righthander Jeremy Jeffress from Halifax County High of South Boston, Va., lit up radar guns, touching 98 mph on some and pitching at 95 on the Baseball America Stalker gun. He polished off the side in his first inning by blowing a 97 mph fastball by Andrew Clark, a powerful lefthanded hitter from New Palestine (Ind.) High who will be Jeffress' teammate at the upcoming Aflac All-American game. Jeffress established himself as one of the top pitching prospects in the class, showing good control of his fastball from a three-quarters arm slot. His slider sat at 79 mph, though he needs to tighten it a touch.

Scouts identified Jeffress as a potential frontline starting pitcher when he gained exposure on the national showcase and tournament circuit prior to his junior season at Halifax County High. He has a long, lean build that scouts rave about, making him a player many believe will continue to improve as he matures physically. Jeffress made a good showing at the 2005 Perfect Game National Showcase where he ranked among the top 10 prospects in attendance at the Atlanta-based event. He flashed a 90-plus mph fastball and an above-average breaking ball during the 2004 Perfect Game/Baseball America World Wood Bat Association Fall Championship in Fort Myers, Fla., in October 2004. Jeffress is the youngest of four children of Fred and Yolanda Jeffress. His sister Racquel attends Virginia Union University where she majors in Political Science and is a member of the women's basketball team . Jeffress is the drummer and a member of the youth choir at his area church and also plays basketball at Halifax County High.

Jeffress is one of the most exciting players to watch among those eligible for the 2006 draft, as he is an excitable player that exudes confidence on the mound. He often pumps his fist into his glove before delivering a pitch, and matches his confidence with an explosive mid-90s fastball. He also throws a nasty slider, although the pitch could use more consistency. His delivery seems effortless, and he uses his lower half well when pitching. Overall he is a very good overall athlete whose frame and stuff has drawn comparisons to Dwight Gooden. While he does throw extremely hard, it remains to be seen whether or not he can maintain that velocity as a starter, as his fastball can dip into the high-80s. With plenty of room to add strength many believe maturity will help aid that perceived problem, as he offers one of the most explosive and intriguing arms for the 2006 draft.how can we persuade him to head over to the REAL LU?
