If I wanted to make a career out of it I'd change the "and junk." I just enjoy sports journalism and anything of that nature. I usta cover my high school with some of their sports.

Its the same way for softball but out there the press box is smaller than the bathrooms where I live on campus so there just isn't enough room

Yes, they do all their games outside. There is no room for radio in the press box. Why do you think it has been discussed on this site about needing a new pressbox? Ryan Bomberger, the baseball SID, can only sit six at best and one person gets hit by the door, it is that small. If Chris Lang comes, a visiting SID which is standard, score board operator, PA, computer score keeper and official scorer are there, there is no room. All games at baseball have always been done outside.

It is standard procedure throughout college baseball. William and Mary built a brand new station three years ago and they did not put a radio booth in their stadium. There you have to do it from an alcove. Old Dominion does not do radio from the press box. In our league, only Winthrop has a radio booth. Even at Coastal, radio is outside. Last year at the Big South Championship, radios worked outside. They did have a tent, but they were outside. Their box is not big enough for one radio team, let alone two.

Torry Holt who does Virginia Tech radio says our radio set up is better than half of the ACC. He says at Duke, there is not even a place to run phone line to. There is no press box. Everyone sits out a card tables. At Miami, one of the top programs in the nation, he sat outside. Very few schools, even the big names in college baseball have radio in the press box. The boxes are not big enough.

It is not a priority of the athletic department, the baseball team, the university or WWMC to build a new press box. There are several other more pressing needs and it will cost money, Liberty does not have. Now if you would like to donate a $500,000 and designate it for a baseball press box, I am sure someone will be willing to take it.

There is no question it is a small space but that is not entirely true, back when I was a student and maybe a year or two after I graduated we did the games inside in the far corner. I want to say the move outdoors happened around 2001. We also did softball games inside there tiny PB while I was in school... which was a real tight squeeze. I actually had a buddy who was on the third floor of the dorm there and we did the last few games my senior year from his window... which was actually a great view for the most part.

Thanks for the setting the record straight as far as games always being outside. Still, even when Ryan only has a crew of three (PA, score board and book) and himself there is not enought room. It just isn't feasible.

Last season, they tried to have Winthrop radio once and Liberty radio in once due to rain and neither time worked. Liberty radio with two casters took up the whole one side during the Radford game didn't' work especially when the Radford SID was there. In addition, several members administrators where in the box for several innings (Todd Wetmore, Kim Graham, Radford Assistant AD) and no one could move.

thanks for that info guys, I can honestly say I had no idea that was the situation. I don't recall that happening back in the day, but memory fades! Its a real shame- I hope the situation gets addressed.

I think I assumed between the pressbox and that "fieldhouse" that there would have been a spot for radio- that makes the job you guys do all the more impressive.

I have really been enjoying the coverage this year- what I've been able to sit and listen to, anyway- keep up the great work!

If you think that little pressbox cost 500k, you are nuts haha. Painted cinder blocks ( sp?) and a roof on a slab of concrete is not that expensive.

As far as sitting in the press box, there were actually games where i was told we weren't allowed in the press box due to overcrowding ( i hated broadcasting in there anyway)......everyone in there talks and it would bleed right into your mic.

UNC also has beautiful facilities and really that field is something we could really model ours after..... minus the huge video scoreboard.

Not to mention that you could put up a wood-frame structure about 10'x20' w/ a truss roof for about 1000 bucks and broadcast from underneath that. It would ideally have an open front to allow game/crowd (!) noise, but sides and a back wall to cut down on wind.

Remember it was my idea and should have my name on it.

The $500,000 is for a new press box, not the price of the old press box. I am not sure whether you guys are joking not or misundestood me. The so-called current press box wasn't even built for $1,000. I just wanted to clear that up, so you don't think I am a crack pot or something.

Also, the overcrowding thing was my point about who is in the box. There just isn't any room to accomodate a radio team. It is also very noisy as rocketfan pointed out.
