The most successful program on Liberty Mountain deserves its own forum. We give Coach Green and the Lady Flames their props while breaking down their run to the Big Dance once again.

Beecher has dad's size, talent

David Teel
July 2, 2008

HAMPTON - Kylee Beecher started with soccer. Then came softball and volleyball.

But when you're the tallest girl in school, and when your dad is 6-foot-9 and scored more than 1,500 points in his college basketball career, there is little doubt about the end game.

"She was one of those who loved sports," former Virginia Tech forward Bobby Beecher said of his daughter. "With her height and my input, basketball seemed to blossom for her."

The blossoming included Group AA state championships in 2007 and '08 at Roanoke's Hidden Valley High, a scholarship to Liberty University and an appearance in Tuesday night's Virginia High School Coaches Association all-star game at Hampton Coliseum.

Good Article... She says that Carter McMasters looks exactly like her dad when he was in college.

Neat connection:
Bobby Beecher played at Virginia Tech from 1982-86, arguably the finest stretch in program history. Teaming with the likes of Dell Curry.

At Liberty, Beecher will have a natural ally who understands the pressures of growing up in a hoops household. Seth Curry, Dell's son and brother of Davidson All-American Stephen Curry, will be a freshman on the Flames' men's team.

"Dell and I have talked about that," Bobby said, "about how we started together as freshmen at Tech and our kids could start as freshmen at Liberty."
I hope McKay & co are keeping on eye out on younger bro.:
Kylee, an "A" student, occasionally hones her game against her 14-year-old brother, Austin, who's 6-2 and "growing like a weed," according to Bobby.

Can Austin beat his big sister?

"Not yet," their dad said.

"He's getting there," Kylee said.

Yeah, considering we’ve already signed 2 6’10” guys and have a commit from another (who’s still growing) in 2 years.

Well I will say that if he is over 6-7 and plays the wing and never wants to bang we will go after him... so i guess we could watch him

I get really tired of hearing that our big recruits are wing players and don't like to bang just because they don't weigh 250 plus and they are reported to have some versitility in their game. We haven't seen them play yet. Austin Smith was the leading scorer and rebounder in the Arizona state championship game. He shot one 3 and made it, but scored mainly on the inside. McMasters is a shot blocker, and has matched up well inside against high major prospects like Tenessee signee Julic, and the new committ Vander Pol put up monster numbers in boards and blocks as a Junior.

The fact is most players with the reputation of being a "banger" are just guys who don't have the talent to do anything else. I'm all for having a physical presence, but not if it is at the expense of athleticism and skill. 2 of the 3 most dominant post players in LU basketball history, Cliff Webber and Peter Aluma, arrived on campus as relatively skinny guys with some athleticism and talent. As they matured, each became a physical force. This was long before the days of Bill Gillespie and world-class weight room facilities.
