The reality is that there is a huge dropoff in talent level after about the first 3 seeds (12 overall). We would be much better off with a 12 or 13 seed. The first round game against a 4 or 5 is still winnable, and you get a similarly seeded opponent (or another upset winner) in the second round.
I disagree with this. We’ve only won an NCAA tourney game in one season. One! One in all our years of success! If we were to get an 8/9 seed that would be huge in terms of chances to win a game. Some people on this board think we should be in the sweet 16 and beyond every year. Unrealistic.
Plus, the higher seed we are able to earn, the better our chances of getting higher seeds in future years.
Note the highlighted part of my OP. Of course it would be a huge feather in the cap of our program in and of itself to get a higher seed; but in the current landscape of women's basketball, a huge disproportion of talent is in the top few programs, with a lot of parity in the next 30 or 40. I don't believe there is that much difference between playing an 8 or a 5 in the first round, and a huge difference between playing a 4/5/6 as opposed to a 1/2/3 in the second round if you win in the first.
I will be exctatic if we simply get in, and if we do, considering the non-conference wins we have, I think we will be no worse than a 12.
