Game #31 Big South Tourney: LU vs. Radford

In the BSC tournament quarterfinals, the Highlanders just beat CSU by 21 after beating us by 23 late in the season, and they face us again tonight in the semi-final game at 8:00 being broadcast on WDRL & FTN. Does anyone give us much hope in winning this game, or is Radford just too strong this year?
(waiting for Fumble to chime in that we are still the 10-time defending conference champions)

Wait no longer...
...Until we lose, the Lady Flames are still the 10-time defending champions.

Radford is decent and we do stand a chance to win. in that meeting against them in radford we didn't play good defense (non existent defense) and 24 points of theirs were from the perimeter (8-10). Need to play better defense to have a chance.

According to Lang's article, we did beat Radford by 13 earlier in the year at home (79-66). I'm confident that Coach Green will have his Lady Flames prepared for tonight and am hoping for a win in a close game.

how odd is it that we sit here hoping a Carey Green team "has a chance"
Reality bites

Ohh man, first time since I've been an LU fan that I thought we had even a chance to lose in the semis. Actually, I've never felt like we had a chance to lose except for in the finals last year. Hopefully the girls will be able to dig down deep, and knock off those Highlanders.

I thought that the loss last week to Radford was a fluke. The only question is will the real Lady Flames come to play ( The ones that beat UVA and gave Pitt and GW all that they could handle). If they come to play as they are capable of and get others to contribute besides Megan then we will win. If not it will be a sad ending to the season that had high expectations.

Well, Steve, that was just it. Last night, when it was all Megan, Megan, Megan, LU struggled. Once other people got involved, especially Lightfoot, KP and Rachel, the team started to play well. BSC is a really tough matchup for Liberty because the Flames aren't exactly very athletic. And I don't think you can undersell the point about BSC playing its last Division I game. I was really impressed with their effort last night. They gave everything they had.
On to Radford: The key is to find a way to get Kelli Darden in foul trouble. Easier said than done. Kelli has really long arms and a great sense of timing with her blocks. She had as much to do with LU's struggles last Saturday as Radford's shooting did. Every time Liberty went inside, Darden stepped up and made a play. Fertitta can be neutralized. Darden is a lot tougher. LU's guards have to defend. There was a lot of confusion, mix-ups coming off screens and what not, at RU last Saturday, and that led to the open looks.
If Radford gets hot from the outside, no one in this conference can beat them. They're too good in the post. The hope is that you find a way to neutralize those guards, espeically Earp and White, and keep them from going off. This should be a real entertaining game.

Chris, it seems like you know Radford very well. Hopefully Coach Green will devise a gameplan that will work based on what you are saying. I know that we can win this game.

Do we have a chance?
That is a crazy question... where else in the world would you split with a team in the reg. season, finish with the same record as them, be the 10 time champs... and have your fans question whether you even have a CHANCE of winning the game. Wow!
Give RU credit... they came out on SENIOR NIGHT and played their best game of the season and beat us in the ground. They hit ten threes (8 OF 10 IN THE FIRST HALF ALONE) and shot 27 more Free Throws than us. We didn't defend well, but they also hit some threes that were contested (Earp hit one where she just chucked it up from 25 feet with the shot clock running out.)
If you remember back to the game in the Vines... we handled them pretty easily and we shot lights out. I wouldn't throw the towel in just yet, Radford is good but teams tend to tense up a bit at tournament time and our girls are used to the spotlight. If memory serves me the seniors on Radford have only made it past the first round once before.
RU could play well and we could play bad and lose but if both teams play their average game, we win a close one. If we play our best game, we could win by 10 or more.
Do we have a chance? Does Pokey Chapman like Indigo Girls?

I'd make that my new signature on the board, but I'm afraid it'd scare any newcomers we may have.

Hey, If it's good enough for Rush Limbaugh..........
(For those who don't know, when El Rushbo was single, he used to say he could pursue women and remain politically correct by claiming to be a "male lesbian." )

Credit Radford for capitalizing on our crappy defense at Radford. Those three pointers in the first half probably two or three were contested. I watched the game online. Will the real LU team play tonight? We will find out in less than 6 hours from now. Because if not then its going to be a long summer.

I don't think anybody on here is saying we don't have a chance fsn...I do think that there has been clear signs of concern for this team throughout the second half of the season. Different things have been distracting this team and I think that it all began with the media coverage (blame espn)...
with all of that said, we have a great chance...we have the most talent in the conference and as long as we play our game and limit our turnover to under 20 I say we're in good shape. I say under 20 because this team is not going to fix their turnover problem, but as long as they keep it under control a little bit there is no reason why we can't win this thing
I am confident we'll win...but its far from a sure thing
