The most successful program on Liberty Mountain deserves its own forum. We give Coach Green and the Lady Flames their props while breaking down their run to the Big Dance once again.

Ok, the last few game threads have turned into debates more or less about our Lady Flames, so I figured I'd just start one where we can all voice our opinions about the state of this program (but no personal attacks).

Ok, so we started the season off strong...we beat 5 teams (though GMU was quite the scare) including UVA on the road. Then we play JMU. JMU is quite a step up from a lot of the competition we saw last year OOC. They are a contender to win a very strong CAA this year. They are not exactly Loyola-MD. We lose, which I didn't pick us to lose this game, but whatever. Then we return home to face VT. I think we all picked this game to be a W by the time game time rolled around, seeing as how VT lost at home to both Radford and W&M (W&M incidently has also lost on the road to High Point). We get a double-digit lead right before the half, but in the waning seconds of the first half VT gets on a run to gain some momentum. We end up losing 55-52. A disappointment, but remember VT is in the extremely powerful ACC. Then up to GW...we have a solid lead at halftime but lose a close one. GW is ranked in the top 20...Feenstra and Co. didn't knock off a top 20 team until upsetting No. 17 Kansas State their senior year (and still lost at home to VT that year) and K-State was without their star player. Up there, we were without KP. We beat Va. Union, and then its off to Cancun where we lose two to UT-Arlington and Pitt. UTA is, again, above the level of our normal OOC competition. Last year, we had the likes of William & Mary (though they are better this year it seems), Loyola MD., and other middle-of-the-pack-in-one-bid-conference teams. UTA, JMU are contenders for the Southland and CAA, respectively, and Marist is definitely a contender for the MAAC when we face them. Pitt is from the Big East, and while we did have a lead at halftime and for most of the second half, there is a reason why they are ranked and they proved it against us.

So, final analysis. Are we a good team? Yes. Do we have issues? Yes-like turnovers and closing games out. Do we have issues beyond our control? Yes-KP's injury. What will it take to fix these issues? Better play from our guards-we know Faschnact and Watkins are both capable of scoring in double digits, better ball handling. Do we have the talent to fix these issues? Yes. The coaching staff? Yes. Is it going to take time? Yes it will. This is a good team, facing some better teams than what we had last year. Bottom line...good team, a couple more losses due to better competition, still gonna dominate the Big South and earn 11th straight bid to NCAA tourney.

A step up in competition for a VERY young team. Things will get better and soon. We have the right things in place to continue the successes we have been privledged to enjoy over the last many years. Maybe not this year, but believe we will win some more NCAA tourney games before long.

I'm glad to see us playing such tough competition. If we have this same schedule difficulty the next couple of years, come NCAA time we will be ready to pull off another upset or two.

I support the women's team. The only game I've been to this year was the LU vs. VT (I haven't made a men's game yet).

Coach Green can definately coach. I think this team will get better. But if you think about it, we struggled in the Big South some last year. But our best player was hurt. This year, we got our best player back...but now it seems like players that scored last year, like Faschnaught, are trying to be too unselfish.

I think Coach Green will get this thing straigtened out by the time Big South play arrives. I agree with Scar in that you can't expect tournament run every year with a Big South team.

I'd be overjoyed if we keep winning our conference every year...and maybe every 4 or 5 years get a tournament win...

2 years from now when the frazees are seniors, that might be the magical year...maybe we get a shooting guard that can shoot lights out to go along with them.

But LU is still a good team this year...just not super. But that's okay with me. I just hope that we start playing a little better and comming out on the winning side of these things...and I think that will happen.

These other schools aren't just sitting back and doing nothing in the BS...they are working harder then ever to knock us off...us being on top year after year will have to come to an end at some point...although if we finish 2nd this year then I think we should put on a search committee to find a new coach

We are very talented. I went on record saying we had the best team in the Commonwealth, and while I do believe that I don't think the record reflects that :(
Not being in practice everyday, I can only speculate about our problem and that is Chemistry. Are there some jealousies (sp) on the team? Why do some people not take over who are capable and why do some who are not try?
I look at this year like I would a turtle. We stick our head out to see what we can see (play a tough out of conf. schedule) get whacked (lose) and then go back into our shell (conference play) where we are safe (One for the Big Toe?). Since the women have a nice record of success, I imagine this as only an aberration and expect us to be back "out of our shell" next season.
The recent losses to IMO sub par competition will be detrimental to our NCAA seeding and may only yield us a 15 seed.

I wouldn't say the competition has been sub-par...all those losses are to quality mid-majors or big-majors (that includes VT, but they are in a down year-the only sub-100 RPI loss in the bunch). I doubt we'll be as low as a 15, I think we'll get a 14 with a possible 13 if we run the conference. With the tourney not our place, those wins will help more than if it was in the Vines. What will also help is if the other conference favorites get upset in their tourneys.

I understand what you're saying- but I hate when we have to depend on OTHER teams losing to help OUR standings.

We should be in a place where we are controlling our own destiny at this point.

I believe we do IN conf, but not so much OOC and for tourney seedings. Thats one area we can certainly improve.

PH may well have hit the nail on the head re: team chemistry- just look at MBB and THEIR inconsistency (ie; its not always the coaching) .
