We step out of Big South play Wednesday night at 7pm heading over to Farmville to face conference wannabe Longwood. They are an independent while they go through their provisional period to gain Division I status.

They are coming off a road victory at IPFW for their second win over that school in two weeks. They own victories this season over Big South teams UNCA in Farmville and at Charleston Southern. Here are their key players:

We might have a tendency to take this team lightly considering it is OOC.

My guess is A-Train's making the roadie for some of Momma's home cooking.

This game is just what the doctor ordered for the Lady Flames... an out of conf. game with little importance against a bad team. It sounds like we need a game with no pressure so that some players can get comfortable with their new roles since Frazee got hurt.

I look forward to seeing how this team responds to adversity. Someone with Carey Green's calm demeanor is perfect to keep the troops focused. Should be a competitive but fun rest of the season.

LU up by 18 early in the second half. On a 14-0 run after being down in the 1st half by 6 at one point. Nigabatse is the leading scorer right now. Watkins and Fasnacht playing well on defence in this half.

59-34 right now. Things are really clicking right now at both ends. Lets up this one in the books.

It's turnover galore for Longwood. Everyone playing, even Alex. Looks like a typical Big South blowout.

After the past few weeks, a blowout victory is welcome. Hopefully it gives our girls a boost of confidence.

77-50 is the final score. second half was just way too easy. Need that boost of confidence as they hit the road at Radford.

I was so tempted to drive to Farmville tonight from Richmond but I fell asleep. Oh well, it looks like we handled our business. I plan on catching up with former Lady Flames coach Chris Carroll who is with the Richmond Lady Spiders now. I will let you know how things are going when I talk with him. Good win for the Ladies! I told Coach Green before the Season that Rollie was going to really be good for him this season (like he didn't know).

That 10 minutes after halftime could prove to be a turning point for this season. They seemed to finally find a post-Megan identity, using a swarming defense to create turnovers and offensive opportunities in transition. The lead went from four to 27 in less than nine minutes.

I can't say enough about Roli and her play. She made one of the smartest plays I've seen in a long time last night. She was up at a the top of the key and Egle was calling for the ball on the block. Roli kept looking at her, kept looking at her, looking like she was going to feed her, and Longwood bit. Three players came over to cover Egle and Moriah Frazee snuck in the back door and Roli fed her for an uncontested layup. Just a brilliant play.

That first half was quite sloppy but when we play like we did in the second half, that is the style of play that i am expecting from this team. It seems like we finally got some scoring going on. Good points Chris. Big game at Radford. I might try to go to that game.

I wonder if we will drop out of espn's bracket when they update it next. They updated it last right before the girls lost to HPU.

FYI ... the tiebreaker if HPU and Liberty finish 13-1 ... a coin flip. Nice job Big South. You don't battle for 14 games in a league season to have a 50-50 flip determine who hosts the final. At least use RPI, since those numbers are public.

I'm pretty sure most leagues go to a coin-flip in that situation...But don't worry, Winthrop's going to knock off HPU this upcoming weekend.

Second Half Start Lifts Lady Flames Over Lancers
February 1, 2006 · Farmville, Va.

The Lady Flames score 18-unanswered points to start the second half and to open up a game of runs en route to a convincing 77-50 non-conference road victory over Longwood, Wednesday evening, at Willett Hall.

The first eight minutes of the game was closely played as neither team was able to extend its lead over four points. But with Liberty leading 12-8 at the 11:46 mark after a Moriah Frazee lay-up, Longwood used an 11-0 run to gain its largest lead of the game at seven, 19-12. Courtney Dyer capped off the run for the Lancers when she drained a three-pointer with 8:27 remaining in the first half.

The Lancers continued to control the pace of play over the next three minutes as Longwood led by five, 22-17, after Ashley Mason converted on one of two free throw attempts.

However, Rebecca Lightfoot connected on a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to start a 13-0 run for Liberty that eventually gave Liberty a 30-22 edge after Roli-Ann Nikagbatse nailed one of two free throw attempts at the 1:55 mark.

The Lancers managed to trim the lead back to four points over the remainder of the period by scoring six out of the last eight points of the period, allowing Liberty to take a 32-28 edge in the locker room at halftime.

Liberty came out flying in the second half, holding Longwood scoreless for the first six minutes, while scoring 18-straight points to take a commanding 50-28 lead. Anna Steg finally broke the Lancers scoreless streak when she hit one free throw at the 13:36 mark.

Liberty continued to dominate, building a 29-point advantage; it’s largest of the game, at 58-29 with 6:19 remaining in the contest. Longwood was able to slice the Lady Flames lead to 24, two different times over the final six minutes, but could not overcome the large deficit and dropped the 27-point loss.

Courtney Watkins led the Lady Flames as she scored 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, while Lightfoot came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points as she was 4-of-5 from the field. Moriah Frazee led the team with seven rebounds, while adding seven points, while Nikagbatse dished out six of the team’s 17 assists.

Liberty’s strong second half defensive effort held the Lancers to just 29.8 percent shooting from the field, while the Lady Flames forced 27 turnovers and scored 30 of their 77 points off Longwood’s giveaways.

The Lancers’ leading scorer was Dyer as she came off the bench to score 12 points, while Anna Steg finished with 11 points, which was aided by 7-of-8 shooting from the free throw line.

The Lady Flames will continue their four-game road swing as Liberty travels down to Radford, Va. for a key Big South Conference battle against the Highlanders. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Dedmon Center.

Look what DIDN'T get cut outta my article in the LU Fishwrap:

"Longwood, a school that has made known its desire for joining the Big South, proved that its women's basketball team would fit in with the rest of the league by being on the losing end of a Lady Flames blowout." :D

uhhh... it was a clever phrase, but maybe this isn't the best time to say something like that... we are in 2nd place at the moment and I don't see many blowouts in our future this year...contrary to what has been said in the past, the league is much better this year and we are still trying to fit pieces together after losing Megan. We have to live in the present... and this year we really only have one blow-out. Don't get me wrong... I think we are still the best team in the conf. but it just might not be a good time to come across as semi-arrogant.

If it was an opinion column then I guess that's not a big deal... but if it was a game article... let me go back to my original thought... uhhh.

Yes...but my editor liked, she thought it was funny...and the faculty advisor thought it might be a "little mean" but yeah, it'll be in there unless they took it out last night.

As far as standings and blowouts go, yes, the team is in second and still trying to figure out an identity without Megan, but at the same time I think we'll be ok and hopefully beat High Point here at home which will greatly improve our RPI. If only we had taken care of business against NC State and Florida, if only both us and Radford had beaten VaTech, and if Winthrop had won those one-point losses to Charlotte and Clemson, then I think our conference could've possibly been in a position to send two teams to the tourney this year...alas though, it wasn't meant to be.

Atrain your editor is a moron then...you haven't seen any other teams beside LU play I take it.... The league is 10x's better this year FSN nailed it..don't expect many more blowouts...
