Game time is 3 PM est.... BSU is 6-10 (1-3) overall and lost at Coastal earlier in the week 70-57, they have a new coach in Brad Hodge.... Couple of things to watch out for is, how our defense plays against the 3... BSU shoots it at 34% we can not allow them to hit 10 3's like we did on Wednesday night... Secondly we have to finish around the basket as Coach Green will talk about later that we have got to get more points off our offenseive rebounds... Overall this is a game that we should win, this team needs to get there first conference road win.. With Longwood on Wed and Radford next Sat the ladies will not be in the Vines for a while and need to get back on the winning side of the stick....

GMTM ... a nitpick, it's Birmingham-Southern College not Birmingham-Southern University. Sorry, the old copy editor coming out in me. :)

Listened to most of the game and it was a lot closer than the final score indicated. I guess every game is going to be a battle.

It looks like our struggles continue but a win is a win and there is no reason to complain. I looks like our post game has gone downhill lately good thing Fasnacht and Nigabatse picked it up. The road can be a struggle sometimes but I am sure Cary Green will straighten things out.

A win is a win on the road in league play. We've just been spoiled for the past decade beating the tar out of everyone. Just picking up the W is cool with me.

The conference seems a tad better this year for some reason based on out of conference performances. We might see fewer blowouts this year.

Liberty Holds Off Panther Women, 51-40
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Despite keeping the score close for the majority of the game, the Birmingham-Southern women’s basketball team was unable to overcome Liberty, Saturday, in Bill Battle Coliseum, losing 51-40 to the nine-time defending Big South Conference champions. BSC falls to 6-11 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while the Lady Flames move to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in the league. The Panthers have never beaten Liberty, and the Lady Flames increase their advantage to 10-0 all-time against BSC. Liberty jumped out to an early 7-2 lead only two minutes into the game and would hold onto the lead until the 6:45 mark of the first half when BSC tied it up, 9-9, and then took the lead, 10-9, on two made free throws from sophomore Reba Ross. The Panthers then led by three, twice, before a three-pointer from Liberty’s Rebecca Lightfoot tied things up again, 14-14, with 3:44 left in the half. Ross made two more free throws, but Liberty answered back with two of their own from Allyson Fasnacht to tie it up at 16-16, and Roli-Ann Nikagbatse put Liberty up by three with a three-pointer at the 1:18 mark. The Lady Flames led, 20-18, at the half. Both teams struggled on shooting in the first half, with BSC hitting 22.2 percent from the field and Liberty hitting 25.0 percent. The Lady Flames used a 9-2 run to open the second half to go up by nine, 29-20, nearly six minutes into the half. After that point, BSC senior Stacey Anthony hit three straight three-pointers to tie things up, 29-29, with 12:22 on the clock. After a made free throw from freshman Ashley Thornton to put the Panthers up by one, Fasnacht sank two more free throws to give the Lady Flames the lead again, 31-30, with 7:06 left to play. Ross made a layup after that, putting BSC up, 32-31, before Liberty scored eight straight points to go back up by seven, 39-32, at the 3:15 mark. The two teams traded baskets after that point as BSC attempted a comeback, but the Lady Flames held on, going 5-of-6 from the free throw line during the last 1:10 to help them to the 11-point win. Fasnacht led all players with 14 points, going 3-of-6 from the field and 7-of-8 at the charity stripe, while Karolina Piotrkiewicz grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Nikagbatse also scored in double digits with 10 points, and Fasnacht led the team with four assists. Ross led BSC with 12 points, and senior Crystal Reed pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go along with her nine points. Anthony also recorded nine points and led all players with five steals, while junior Pam Thornborrow led the Panthers with four assists. Liberty out-shot BSC in all categories, shooting 33.3 percent from the field, 30.8 percent on three-pointers, and 73.1 percent at the free throw line, while BSC was 26.4 percent from the field, 25.0 percent from three-point land, and 55.6 percent from the charity stripe. The Lady Flames also out-rebounded BSC, 41-32, but committed two more turnovers than the Panthers with 16. Both teams made 14 field goals in the game, but the Panthers were whistled for over twice as many fouls as Liberty, 22-10, and the Lady Flames went 19-of-26 from the free throw line as compared to BSC’s 5-of-9 performance. The Panthers are at home again for more Big South play this Monday, Jan. 30, as they welcome Radford to Bill Battle Coliseum for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Its tough when you operate your offense around one terrific weapon and then have to make adjustments midseason. All things considered, they have really done well not to collapse under the strain. But it appears they are beginning to regain their stride.

Fasnacht Nets Season High As Lady Flames Down Birmingham-Southern
January 28, 2006 · Birmingham, Ala.

Allyson Fasnacht scored a season-high 14 points, including ten in the second half, as the Liberty Lady Flames pulled away from Birmingham-Southern down the stretch for 51-40 victory over the Panthers in Big South action, Saturday afternoon, at Bill Battle Coliseum.

With the win, the Liberty moves to 4-1 in the Big South and 12-5 overall, while Birmingham-Southern falls to 1-4 in conference and 6-11 overall. The Panthers have never beaten Liberty and the Lady Flames increase their advantage to 10-0 all-time against Birmingham-Southern.

Liberty built an early 7-2 lead only two minutes into the game as Courtney Watkins (So., G, Bristol, Tenn.) hit a three-pointer to open the game and Roli-Ann Nikagbatse (So., F, Berlin, Germany) scored on a layup after a steal.

The Lady Flames held the lead until the 6:45 mark when Reba Ross hit two free throws to put the Panthers up, 10-9.

Three minutes later, Liberty’s Rebecca Lightfoot (Fr., F, Duluth, Ga.) stepped behind the arc and nailed a three-pointer to knot the score at 14-14. The two teams then swapped leads until Nikagbatse hit a basket from behind the arc to put the Lady Flames in front, 19-16, with 1:18 left in the first half and Liberty would go to the locker room up, 20-18, at intermission on a free throw by Jamie Feagin (Jr., F, Lockport, N.Y.) right before the end of the half.

Both teams struggled from the field in the first half as Birmingham-Southern hit just 22.2 percent (6-27) from the field and Liberty hit 25.0 percent (6-24).

The Lady Flames used a 9-2 run to open the second half to go up by nine, 29-20, nearly six minutes into the half behind 7-of-8 shooting from the free throw line. Rachel Hammond (Fr., G, Clearwater, Fla.) capped the run with a jumper.

After that point, the Panther's Stacey Anthony hit three straight three-pointers to tie the game up, 29-29, with 12:22 on the clock and went up by one, after a made free throw from Ashley Thornton.

Fasnacht (So., G, Salem, Va.) sank two free throws to give the Lady Flames the lead again, 31-30, with 7:06 left to play.

Ross made a layup after that, putting Birmingham-Southern up, 32-31, before Liberty scored eight-straight points to go back up by seven, 39-32, at the 3:15 mark.

The two teams traded three-point baskets after that point as Fasnacht answered a three pointer by the Panthers Britni Ballard. Liberty then put the game away down the stretch by going 5-of-6 from the free throw line during the last 1:10 to help them to the 11-point win.

Fasnacht led all players with 14 points, going 3-of-6 from the field and 7-of-8 at the charity stripe, while Karolina Piotrkiewicz (Jr., C, Calais, France) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Nikagbatse also scored in double digits with 10 points, and Fasnacht led the team with four assists.

Ross led Birmingham Southern with 12 points while Crystal Reed pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go along with her nine points.

The Lady Flames out-shot the Panthers by shooting 33.3 percent from the field to Birmingham-Southern’s 26.4 percent. Liberty also out-shot the Panthers at the free throw line 73.1 percent to 55.6 percent.

The Lady Flames continue their four-game road swing as they step out of conference play and travel up Rt. 460 to square off with the Longwood Lancers, Wednesday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
