If you make it from Charlotte to Lynchburg in three hours, you deserve a major speeding ticket. That trip is 3 1/2-4 hours at best ...

It's 2 hours to Greensboro, then another hour and a half from Greensboro to Charlotte.

Best I've made it from here to the Westin in downtown was 3:45 ... mostly because traffic/construction slowed me down. Plus, after picking up two speeding tickets in a month in Arizona last year, I don't go any faster than 10 over any more. Ain't worth it to cut 10 minutes off the time ...

Remember, katie plays in DC on August 8 at 6PM. It is a 3 and a half hour drive form the Burg to the Metro stations which take you right to Verizon Center. SCAR and I had a great time last year at the game. If you are intrested let me know and I will give you info on getting here.

The Central time zone is awesome!
Some of you guys with time on your hands this summer ought to head down here to Texas to see her play. San Antonio is a great town and it'd be a trip you'd never forget.

I have no comment on how long it takes me to get to Charlotte, but lets just say 3 hours is pretty average. Anyone know if radar detectors are illegal in NC? I've never seen any signs, but do tend to take it off when it sounds...just in case

As far as I know, VA is the only spot where they are illegal.

It used to be Virginia, New Hampshire and one other backwater state.
I still can't believe that in 2006 they are still banned in the commonwealth. It actually rather embarassing and even though its legal here in Texas, I haven't used one in well over a decade.

Seriously. I know there's no constitutional amendment that says we have a right to radar detectors but to ban them seems pretty unamerican. I really hate every aspect of Virginia transportation. (except they keep the roads in pretty good shape)

Once you shell out $250 in speeding fines in one month, you realize it's not worth the risk.
EDIT: I will say that every time I've gone to Charlotte, I've either hit massive traffic or massive construction, cutting my efficiency down quite a bit. Driving at night probably makes the trip a lot quicker.

Are they still constructing the new "I-540" thingee between Danville and Greensboro? I noticed they are STILL working on the I 85-40 beltways northside of Raleigh Durham.

Radar detectors are legal to use in NC but aren't legal to sell if that makes sense. In SC you can just buy them at Radio Shack.

They're actually going to separate 85 and 40 through Greensboro and make 85 pass just south of town. They're also constructing the I-840 loop around Greensboro that "is ultimately planned to be the Greensboro Loop around the city of Greensboro from Interstate 40 west of downtown Greensboro near the Piedmont Triad International Airport to Interstate 40-85 east of Greensboro. Interstate 840 will represent the northern half of the Greensboro Loop; the southern half will be designated as Interstate 40-73 and Interstate 40-85. Existing Interstate 40 will be redesignated as Business Loop I-40." (

I was actually just reading about this last night. Also, it seems that Highway 29 (at least on the NC side) will be brought up to Interstate standards and re-designated I-785. VA is still debating if it's worth their time to bring it up to Interstate standard on their side. All in all, I'm hoping they don't dilly-dally on this construction. My in-laws are on the other side of Winston, and if I stay in Lynchburg, these roads could speed things up quite a bit.[/url]
