NORFOLK, VA- Virginia Tech's Kerri Gardin has been named to the All-State first team by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID). William and Mary's Kyra Kaylor (Pittsburgh, PA.) was named Player of the Year and Virginia Commonwealth's freshman Quanitra Hollingworth (Chesapeake, Va.) Rookie of the Year. Liberty University 's head coach Carey Green was named the Coach of the Year. Rounding out the first team is Meredith Alexis (Hanover Township, PA.) of James Madison, Tamera Young (Wilmington, NC.) of James Madison and Sharnee' Zoll (Marlboro, NJ.) of Virginia.
Gardin helped lead the Hokies to a 21-10 record and to the NCAA Second Round. She averaged 12.7 points and led the ACC in rebounding at 10.0. Selected in the third round of the WNBA by the new Chicago franchise, Gardin was a third team All-ACC selection.
Kaylor is the first William and Mary Player to lead the Colonial Athletic Association in both scoring and rebounding in the same season. She averaged 18.6 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. Kaylor ranked fourth nationally in rebounding and 28th in scoring. She was also selected the CAA Player of the Year.
Hollingsworth ranked seventh nationally in rebounding at 11.1 per game, and averaged 14.7 points per game. The CAA Rookie of the Year and third team All-league selection ranked 22nd nationally in blocked shots (2.3). Hollingsworth also earned CAA All-Defensive honors and was the Sports Illustrated On Campus Athlete of the Week.
Green led Liberty to a 25-6 record as they captured the Big South title for the seventh straight year since he has been head coach. Green was also the Richmond Times Dispatch State Coach-of-the-Year. Green was honored as the state's top Women's coach last year.
Alexis ranked ninth nationally in rebounding at 10.9 and was second in the CAA in scoring at 16.0 and fourth in field goal percentage at .510. She earned first team All-CAA honors for the third straight year. Young averaged 15.6 points per game and 9.9 rebounds. She earned CAA All-Defensive and All-Tournament honors as the Dukes of JMU reached the finals of the CAA Championships and received a bid to the WNIT. She helped lead JMU to a 24-7 record. Virginia's Zoll was a third team All-ACC selection and led the league in assists at 6.24 which is a school record. Zoll also ranked fourth in the ACC in steals (2.31) and helped lead the Cavaliers to the quarterfinals of the WNIT.
