Here is the promised info on getting into town.
You can drive into the District, but in my opinion, you may be better off taking the subway into town. Here are directions if you want to do that. Interstate 66 from Lynchburg brings you into Constitution Avenue and then to 6 or 7th streets to the Verizon Center. From Richmons, it is a trip from 95 to I-395 wich drops you off at Constitution Avenue near the US Capitol.
From Richmond. Take 95 North to the Franconia Springfield Metro station. From there, take the blue line to the Metro Center station and transfer to a Red line train towards Glenmont one stop to the Gallery Place Station.
From Lynchburg, take Route 29 north to I66 Eastbound. Take I 66 until you see the Vienna Metro station. From there, you can take the orange line train to Metro Center and then one stop over to Gallery Place.
If you do plan on taking Metro, be sure that at least one person in your car has a SmartTrip card. This is a credit card like hard plastic card that allows you to pay for parking and train fare. The parking lots do not accept cash or credit cards, so this card is the way to go.
One final piece of information, for good traffic information WTOP FM on 103.5 does traffic reports every 10 minutes. Oh, the subway website is
