The most successful program on Liberty Mountain deserves its own forum. We give Coach Green and the Lady Flames their props while breaking down their run to the Big Dance once again.

Waynesboro standout Devon Brown will play for Liberty University
By Ken Bosserman
Sports Writer

WAYNESBORO — Devon Brown has made her decision.

The Southern Valley District's premier girls' basketball player is headed to Liberty University.

Brown inked a letter of intent for a full basketball scholarship Monday at Waynesboro High School before over a dozen friends, family members, coaches and school officials.

Sorry, Fumble, but she chose us over JMU:
The talented post player narrowed her collegiate selection to James Madison University and Liberty, but chose the Lynchburg school.

"As soon as I got on campus, I loved it," she said. "I knew I fitted in. Today, I felt it was my time. I was ready and committed. I will have to earn my playing time," she said. "If not the post, at No. 2 or No. 3 guard."
I've read 3 articles about her (including one sentence in the N&A), but no one has said how tall (or wide) she is. Does anyone know how tall this girl is?

That should do it for this class barring a surprising development. Very nice across the board filling our primary needs.

Congrats to Coach Green, Coach Sherard and the entire staff.

Brown stands 5-10 and is projected to play on the wing, even though she is a standout post player for the Waynesboro High School Little Giants. As a junior, Brown posted 29 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and two blocked shots per contest, earning first-team all-district, all-region and all-state accolades.
If my math is correct, 3 of the 5 girls we signed are from the Old Dominion:
The list of the Lady Flames’ incoming players for the 2008-09 season now includes Kylee Beecher (F, Roanoke, Va.), Brown, Brittany Campbell (G, Rustburg, Va.), Danika Dale (G, Killeen, Texas) and Amber Mays (G, Pasadena, Calif.).

In terms of talent, she could be one of the biggest recruits Liberty has ever brought in. Coach Sherard was the top recruiter on Devon and has demonstrated an ability to bring in quality players in his limited time with the women.

The local fishwrap had an article this morning about 2 Macedonian girls who are playing for LCA, and said that one of them, Jelena Antic, will be playing for the Lady Flames next year. She is 6'1 and according to her coach can play all 5 positions (at least at the HS level) but will project as a guard or small forward in D1.

Since it seems our scholarships are all spoken for, I would assume she will be a preferred walkon of some sort. There is lots of financial aid available for international students.

If she does indeed go to LCA, then she wouldn't have to pay her tuition at LU.

Here's a quote from the article oldflame is talking about:

"We play more aggressive back home and here it's kind of girly" (LCA's Jelena Antic).

I didn't know Jelana signed but I will tell you that Carey Green thought highly of her when she was a soph and Jr. He thought she could play for him at that point in time and would have been an immediate contributor. Glad to see she is staying in da Burg.

Just talked to a friend in the Waynesboro area and she has or will sign but says she is a female Charles Barkley
I'll be careful, sorta, what I say about this. She IS a talent, but I am not sold on her 100% Her team has a tendency to run up totals against weaker teams (See 120 - 30 victory over Amherst) and struggle against more talented teams (see T-A and H'burg games) To me that makes her a question mark. She does hanlde the ball at this level and really looks like a woman playing with little girls at times, but she is also able to be shut down at times too easily. She will not be able to handle the ball in the manner she does now at the college level, nor will she be able to come in and overpower opponents as she does now at the HS level. Having said that, she does have GREAT potential. I hope she fits in and is able to realize her potential!

I just watched Waynesboro beat TA in the Region III semi-finals last night. They were down by 2 with 5.7 seconds left. Devon's sister receives the inbound pass, dribbles down floor, stops right outside of the three point arch, and sinks it at the buzzer. That shot ended TA's season (TA was ranked first in the state!). I think everyone in the gym thought the ball would go to Devon...it was one of the most exciting high school games I have ever been to. Devon is an amazing player. She can do it all and has remarkably quick feet for her size. TA matched up Kylie Burkholder on Devon all night. Kylie was the district player of the year and should contend for region player of the year. TA also had another girl, good athlete, about 6 ft. and Devon dominated them both-getting ridiculous rebounds...I would say, at least in last night's game, she is the real deal-and in this case, stepped up in a big game situation. I might add, the refs were controversial at best-she was pretty much getting hacked all night and not getting the calls-but she didn't let that affect her game. I am excited to see this girl in an LU uniform next year :D

Future teammate Brittany Cambell's Bees will face Devon's team in the Region III semis Saturday night. Both teams will advance to states!

Devon's team is still alive now in the state semifinals ...
Bruton (22-6) will look to continue its magical postseason run Thursday night when it takes on Region II runnerup Waynesboro (25-3) in the Group AA state semifinals held at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center in Richmond.
Waynesboro is in the midst of a storybook season of its own. The Little Giants posted an undefeated season in the Southern Valley District and captured its first tournament title since 1991 under first-year coach Secrett Stubblefield,

Stubblefield’s team upset No. 1-ranked Turner Ashby 58-57 in the Region III semifinals on a last-second three-pointer from La’Shandra Brown.

Waynesboro is led by Devon Brown, Group AA’s all-time leading scorer. The 5-foot-9 senior averages 31 points a game and has signed to play at Liberty University next winter. A great rebounder as well, she’s the centerpiece of the team’s effort.

KDH All-Area MVPs: Dale, Nichols headline outstanding group
Posted on: Sunday, March 16, 2008, 2:08 AM

By Kevin Posival
Killeen Daily Herald

Tre' Nichols and Danika Dale were as successful lowering their shoulders and pinning back their ears as much as never dropping their heads. And for that, the Killeen Daily Herald honored the two seniors as its All-Area MVPs.
While Nichols followed Killeen's success, Shoemaker's Dale set a standard by not only becoming the first Lady Grey Wolf to sign with a Division I basketball progam but also led Shoemaker back to the playoffs after a 2006-07 campaign where the Lady Grey Wolves posted just one 13-5A win and nine wins the entire season.

"I think I'm doing my job right. I'm getting to where I need to be," Dale said. "A lot of people tell me that for us to get to the playoffs, even though we didn't go far, we still went, that's a big deal."

Dale signed with Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., in mid-November and was surprised three months later with the 13-5A All-District MVP.

"I didn't expect the MVP award, and when I got it I was really, really excited," Dale said. "I'm always thinking about it because I know that when I'm a freshman, I'll have to start all over again and I'm not going to be the top player anymore. But it's great because I am looking forward to working my way back up."

Campbell Is good... Great Pick up by Coach Green. a Tall long wing that has great footwork and 3 pt shooting. Can hit a jumpshot anywhere inside the 3 point line as well. Good defense... Just overall very sound in her fundimentals. It will be exciting to see what she can do over 4 years.
