There are two sides to this and parts of what both you say that are right...
1. Women's sports don't draw as much as Men's sports (shy of figure skating and gymnastics and maybe tennis.)
2. An athletic department should promote ALL events (and I think we do.)
Having been here years ( 98 ) when the women outdrew the men... it can happen. Tennessee's women have outdrawn their men some seasons... UCONN comes close... K-State and others do as well...so to dismiss the notion that attendance can increase is not fair. 1500 on a Monday Night for Winthrop was a pretty good crowd.
Also to say that the Athletic Department doesn't promote the events is not fair... everything I have seen and heard about Saturday says "Doubleheader."
At most of the schools with large women's basketball attendance, the community shows up as the biggest majority of the crowd. At big games the students show up as well. Look at Tennessee last weekend when they had almost 22,000. The students showed up big... I'm sure it didn't hurt that Bruce Pearl was there in body paint, but that crowd was going to be there anyway... the cool thing about Pearl is that now the students will probably continue to follow the team based on the image he showed in the media.
The size of the Vines doesn't help either... If we had High Points gym and averaged 1200, that would be a great home court advantage.
In the perfect world, the men's team would average 6,000 and sell out the big games... the women's team would average 2,500 and get 5,000 for the big games. With the student body growing along with the success of the program... it is possible.
As far as supporting certain sports and not others... I guess I just grew up as a sports junkie... when I got to LU, I went to every event, men's or women's. Heck if we had a dog sled team I would have probably showed up.
I understand that men's sports tend to be more exciting because of the speed of the male athlete... but on some levels the women's game is more fundamentally sound in many sports. Other than maybe a couple examples... there are not many women's basketball teams that employ streetball as an offense...the same can't be said for the men's side... and certainly not in the NBA.
