The most successful program on Liberty Mountain deserves its own forum. We give Coach Green and the Lady Flames their props while breaking down their run to the Big Dance once again.

WRHS girls sign to play college basketball

WARNER ROBINS - Two Warner Robins High seniors kicked off the early signing period Wednesday by accepting college scholarships to play basketball.

Center Kittery Maine and guard/forward Cherie White have secured a free college education from Liberty University and Eastern Kentucky University, respectively.

Both schools are Division I programs, which are allowed by NCAA rules to accept letters of intent from recruits from Nov. 8-15 during an early signing period. The late period is from April 11 to May 16.

"Something like this is big," Warner Robins coach Tom Mobley said. "This comes from a lot of hard work."

While getting a college scholarship was something Maine and White both dreamed about, Mobley said he saw the potential in both girls early.

"I coached Cherie's sister and Cherie would just run around the gym in diapers," Mobley said. "As she got older, I realized what an athlete she was and what God-given talent she has.

"I saw Kittery in middle school and I knew with her height and the ability she has to run and catch, that there would be a very high ceiling for her."

White was one of the county's best players last season. The 5-9 do-it-all averaged 12.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. She was a big reason why the Demons went to the state playoffs.

"I wasn't really into Eastern Kentucky until I toured the campus," White said of the school in Richmond, Ky. "But I met the president and liked her and really liked the campus. It will be hard to be away from my mom because she's my best friend."

Maine, a 6-3 center, has already used her strength this school year in softball when she belted the game-winning home run against Houston County in the sectionals.

Besides her softball powers, Maine is a strong rebounder and displays great leadership abilities on the basketball court.

"I felt God was leading me to Liberty," Maine said. "I just listened to what He had to say. Liberty has a good Christian environment and I felt most comfortable there." The university is in Lynchburg, Va.

Warner Robins starts the season Nov. 18 at a tournament in Griffin
