Shock Acquires Katie Feenstra From San Antonio

Auburn Hills, MI – Detroit Shock Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Bill Laimbeer announced today that the team has acquired San Antonio Silver Stars center and Grand Rapids, MI native Katie Feenstra in exchange for center Ruth Riley. As part of the trade, the Shock also have the option to exchange first round picks with the Silver Stars in 2008.

The 24-year-old Feenstra appeared in all 34 games for the Silver Stars last season – her second in the league – averaging 7.8 points and 6.2 rebounds in 18.7 minutes per game. She ranked among the top twenty in the league in rebounds per game (12th, 6.1), field-goal percentage (16th, .467), and blocks per game (18th, 0.76).

“In Katie we feel like we’re getting another young, physical, center on the rise,” said Laimbeer. “She’s a terrific rebounder, she gets to the free throw line and she’s a force on the defensive end of the floor, all of which fit perfectly with what we think defines us as a ball club.

“This trade also gives us some salary cap flexibility to help us improve our team in other areas this year.”

In acquiring Feenstra, the Shock parted ways with six-year WNBA veteran Ruth Riley who spent her last four seasons with Detroit. The 27-year-old Riley was a member of the Shock’s 2003 and 2006 WNBA Championship teams and was named 2003 Finals MVP. She takes career averages of 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds with her to San Antonio.

“Ruth was a big part of our two championship teams and a big part of our community for the past four seasons. Her performance against Lisa Leslie in Game 3 of the 2003 WNBA Finals is one of the signature moments for our franchise.”
