Last year, little Marist made a big impression in the NCAA Tournament. The Red Foxes, a 13th seed, reached the Sweet Sixteen before losing to eventual champion Tennessee.
Marist is making noise again this season, going 21-2 and 11-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
But this year's surprise team could be Liberty.
The Lady Flames are 20-2 and 5-0 in the Big South, winning their conference games by an average of 22.6 points. Liberty is 25th in the latest RPI (at realtimerpi.com), and is 2-1 vs. RPI Top 50 teams, beating Xavier and James Madison. Their losses were at Virginia Tech and North Carolina, and both games were close until the closing minutes.
Liberty is in the top 20 nationally in five statistical categories, including fourth in field-goal percentage defense, at 34.2 percent.
