Liberty head men’s basketball coach Ritchie McKay announced that David Minaya has transferred into his program from Tennessee Tech of the Ohio Valley Conference. Minaya (Hoboken, N.J.) is a 6-6 guard who will have three seasons of eligibility with the Flames, after concluding his freshman campaign with the Golden Eagles. Minaya won’t officially be a sophomore until the 2009-10 season for the Flames, after he is required to sit out this season due to the mandatory NCAA transfer rule for Division I men’s basketball.

He is 6 foot 6. I mean, that's not shabby. Even if he's a couple inches shorter, that's not bad.

TL20.... Armon Jones.....
He might play... I talked to him the other day and he said he has been working hard... Im not counting him out cause he busts his butt, he cant shoot 3's though so I dont know how much we will use him.

This guy will end up being in the same graduating class as our 7 other freshman this year.

This was the new recruit i spoke about the other day.....played on dominican junior national team. He avg like 22 pts and 12 boards at a Christian HS in FL. Ive seen him, i think he needs to put on a few pounds unless he has a great leaping ability, we could use another rebounder.

How is that possible? We only have 11 for this year.

Says jcmanson on a message board. There are other ways they handle things and scholarships that not everyone knows about. I'm not even going to claim to know the details because I don't. We just had another scholarship left that wasn't going to be used this late in the year but apparently this guy was good enough to warrant using it.

Does the NCAA know about it? Or is this secret exclusive only to McKay and a few others?

He started about half of TTU's games as a frosh last year, played about 14 minutes, shot a low percentage and averaged 4 ppg in a conference that's a notch or 2 above the BSC.

“In anticipation of today’s announcement, the Athletics Department self imposing the NCAA sanctioned penalty early by reducing the number of scholarships for the 2007-08 academic year by one. The program will also be subject to a scholarship reduction for the 2008-09 year, concluding the NCAA penalties.”

No offense to you, but I'm kinda gonna take the word of an NCAA athletic department that has compliance officers and things of that nature rather than a guy on a message board with a link.

I’m not saying I’m right, but I’m just wondering where the extra scholly is coming from.

by Fumblerooskies
Are we not under a 2 scholly penalty the next couple of years due to previous transgressions or issues with the graduation rate? The numbers WOULD add up, if that in fact is the case.

by jcmanson
We’ve lost 2 scholly’s for at least one year.

Did we not assuage some of that penalty by voluntarily sacrificing one scholly last year? That should mean that we only lose one scholly this year.
