McKay better have a good explination for running this kid off.

Thanks for Everything BJ

Liberty head men’s basketball coach Ritchie McKay has announced that sophomore guard B.J. Jenkins has decided to transfer. Jenkins is currently weighing his options of possible institutions to matriculate to.

“We wish B.J. well in all of his future pursuits and endeavors,” said McKay.

Jenkins (Virginia Beach, Va.) started 31-of-32 games for the Flames this season, finishing third on the squad with 9.9 points per game. Jenkins shot 40.2 percent from the floor and 31.1 percent from beyond the arc, while pulling down 4.4 rebounds per contest. Jenkins tallied a career-high 24 points in Liberty’s victory over Niagara on Dec. 1.

Honestly not surprised by this one at all. I mean, I didn't expect it by any means but it doesn't surprise me.

I have to admit that I didn't see this one coming. I wish BJ nothing but the best and I appreciated what he did on the court for the school.

Our freshmen better arrive on campus ready to ball right away.

And let's be careful to characterize why he is leaving as being run off or by his own volition until all of the facts are out in the public arena.

There were rumors he was going to leave last year, but I didn't see it coming now.

I have heard this rumor for well over a year. I really didn't think it was true. I talk to BJ a lot and he is a great kid! I wish him well...I am confident that coach McKay didn't run him off. He was penciled in as a starter I would say for next year. Sly is right about the incoming players. They better be ready because they are gonna see a ton of time. At least a few of them.

Considering we only have 3 schollys/ 4 counting Ohman returning, quite a few of the newbies will see some time.

Best of luck to anyone who tries to better their own situation, whether here or somewhere else.

Agreed, I just hate to see him go. I really enjoyed watching him play.

Pretty presumptuous to say he was "run off", (unless you are going to define that as recruiting players who might eventually replace him). I would certainly not take B.J. as a kid who would shy away from competition, so I'm sure there are other factors. If he is not happy at LU, or doesn't like the direction things are going, now is the time to make this move, while he still has his redshirt year and 2 years of eligibility remaining.

B.J. is talented, and plays with a lot of intensity, but IMHO, he had a very inconsistent year. I have to say it's a bit scary going into next year knowing that freshmen will probably be seeing all the time at PG.

I wonder if McKay will try to fill that scholarship now or hold it for next year?

From what I can tell they just didn't get along. That happens in life. BJ's leaving and going somewhere that he connects with the coach better. I wish the kid nothing but the best.

Question about NCAA rules in this situation......... Once a player has announced his intention to transfer publicly, are other schools allowed to contact him, or does he still have to make the first contact?

I'm pretty sure they're allowed to talk to him. It's best if they go through the other school and submit a permission to talk to request though.

He has to get a signed release from the coach or the AD before any contact with other schools can be officially made. Once he got his release, well, I guess he was "done," as I cannot imagine anyone asking for a release and then staying.

Hmmmmmm........ It was my impression that the student-athlete is always free to talk with other schools as long as he/she initiates the contact. A lot of kids who transfer already have a schollie lined up and announce where they are going at the same time they announce they are leaving.

..exactly, oldflame, which is why I said "officially."

Good luck to BJ. He's a solid player and he'll be missed. Hopefully, he finds the right fit.

This one's been floating out there for a bit, but from what I understand, the Sanders acquisition pretty much sealed the deal.

He knows that. He was implying that's what made BJ decide to definitely transfer.

We could very well be, but we have to remember, outside of CSU and Radford, every other team in the Big South is having a sort of roster overhaul this year as well. Sure, it may not be as grand as ours, but our guys we will be relying on could be better than the other teams.

I say that knowing next year could be a disaster and we could finish near the bottom of the league. It's really a crap shoot to know how we will do.
