Which would you rather have?

Watching all of the Carolina/Duke stuff today has got me thinking. We really don't have a rival in sports. We've got some semi-rivalries, but nothing good. My question is this: Would you rather have a rivalry where you flat out hate each other or a rivalry that's like two good friends always wanting to show the other up?
When I was at Coastal, we played SCSU in football. That game was an amazing game and during the game, both teams wanted to win. However, after the game, everyone was friendly, cordial, etc. At the same time, after the Winthrop/CCU basketball game, I said "Good game" to a Winthrop usher and she said back "Not good enough for you guys" and that rivalry is pretty heated.
Which would you rather have?

I want the old rivalries like we had with Winthrop in Marshall's first couple of years...you just knew something would happen. I want the bitter RU/LU rivalries. Right now, that is missing, in my opinion. I think the athletic dept is trying to establish that with the BEAT COASTAL theme. In baseball, back in the Pastor's era...you just knew it was going to be bitter playing Coastal.

I hope the Liberty/Radford rivalry is heating up, after the incident with BJ. Too bad they're garbage and don't have football.

It used to be a great rivalry between Radford and LU. My freshman year when we lost to them in the semi's was just an intense game. We gave their players so much crap or should I say Poopoola

you don't need football to have a good hoops rivalry. do you honestly think anyone gives a crap about duke or UNC football? students don't even care about it...

I'll take whatever we can get. But building something with VMI sure would make a lot of sense. But I realize it takes years to build.

Can't we have rivalries that are both? Like in tennis...our men's tennis team HATES CSU, but with Longwood we have a cookout after the match is over (and yes, things do get heated during the match...but afterwards everything's good). I think in hoops, having RU as our main, hated rival is whats needed...I thought High Point would've replaced them after the 2004 Championship Game with the way both fans acted towards each other, but nope, so I think we need to revert back to Radford. Longwood and VMI could be our friendly rivals. In football, the only school we can have any type of real rivalry with is VMI.

We couldn't have a friendly rivalry with VMI. They hate us.

Having a "can-you-top-this" rivalry would be much more entertaining, IMO. The thing I like about UNC/Duke is that no matter what the game is going to be hard-nosed and tough. However, in a moment of crises, the teams work together (ie; the tragic passing of UNC's student body president).
Would love to see that with VMI, however, as SJ said can't see it happening with their hatred for us.

Ditto for Presby, apparently.
I think Coastal is as friendly a rivalry as we're going to have.

I threw up when I saw some of the LUantics shaking the hands of Radturd fans...

I was glad we had something with those guys where it was hatred on the court but not off of it. I've got no problem with that type of stuff. Radford means nothing to the current students.

Id rather have a rivalry like that, where we were hardcore when the game was going on, but when it was over, we could go to BWW or wherever and have a bite or something. I dont like abject hatred rivalries that much personally. I mean it was nice to shake hands with teh Radford guy that was next to me after the game in Vines (even if it made HMO wretch)

definately love to hate a rival. Although it somewhat goes against the nature of our school. But I have a natural disdain for all of the teams in our league anyway. So it's easy for me to despise every team that comes into our place to play. Don't even get me started about when we lose league games. I can't even look at the stats for like a week.

That's just typical HPU fans for you. They'll start something with fans from any team.
I'm of the opinion that it's good for a team to have both heated and friendly rivals. Every school needs one or two other teams that you just love to hate. The kind of rivalry where you hope the other team gets embarassed every time they play. As a WU fan, we've got that with Coastal (always) and HPU (in recent years). It can also be nice to have rivalries where you don't hate the other team when you're not playing them. When WU and LU play, of course I want WU to win, but I don't hold any grudges or ill will towards LU or their fans regardless of the outcome. Sometimes, you just need that type of game.
