McLean, Anderson & Ohman Honored by BSC

The Big South Conference announced today its annual postseason awards and Liberty’s Alex McLean, Jeremy Anderson and Kyle Ohman were included on this year’s list. McLean’s first-team selection highlights the Liberty honorees.

McLean (Sr., Forward, Bay Shore, N.Y.) was named to the first team, marking the sixth-straight year Liberty has placed a player on the first team, tying the second-best streak in conference history. The streak also serves as the longest current streak among conference teams.

“Alex is very deserving of the award,” said head coach Ritchie McKay. “I think anytime a player is named to the first team his teammates had a hand in helping him get there. No one works harder than Alex, which is the foundation of his first-team selection.”

McLean ranks No. 6 in the Big South in scoring with 15.8 points per game, while pulling down 8.9 rebounds per game, which ranks No. 3 in the league. The senior also ranks No. 2 in the conference in field goal percentage (55.7), while being one of three players in the league to be ranked in the Top 6 in both scoring and rebounding.

Chavis and Kenny George have the spots that Smitty could've went in.

I'm surprised Gaynor didn't get first team. That really surprises me.

wow, WU not represented on the 1st team. I don't agree with it, but I'm more than willing to chuckle at it.

We can't expect to get more than two guys on there being the fourth place team.

We would've gotten Smitty or Teejay, but not both.

Gaynor should be first team and Leasure second at best.

Kenny George missed too many games to make it.

VMI (5th place) has more players than High Point (3rd place) and Liberty (4th place).

TJ's lack of scoring hurts him. He's probably the second best PG in the conference behind Gaynor, IMO, but his statics weren't good enough to replace any of the gaurds mentioned.

I agree with everything except for Leasure one the 1st team. He's living off his name alone.

The SIDs seem to have had an infatuation with Leasure since his freshman season. It is bizarre.

I am not a big fan of all conference teams that don't take position into account. This one is better than many have been in the past (BSC has been known to name 5 guards to the first team). 2 shooting guards on the first team and 2 point guards on the second team, but at least your first team has a post, 2 forwards and 2 guards. I can't stand either of them, but I would have put Jefferson ahead of Garland. Probably not enough quality centers and forwards to make a "legit" second team. George did not play enough IMHO to earn second team. I think you could make an argument for Smitty over either George or Chavis Holmes. Holmes is good, but VMI player's numbers are inflated. Anthony was definate the 3rd best forward in the conference; especially the second half of conference play.

SIDs and the media (I think)... and we all know how much (or how little) they know. :P

I think that being a mod of a message board in the Big South should make you part of the Big South media... and give you a vote. 8)

Actually the SIDs are better voters than coaches who often get caught up in political aspect of voting. If you have legitimate media regularly covering the league, they tend to be the ones who are most objective (since they are the only ones not on a school's payroll).

Leasure got the first team vote because of his career accomplishments. I don't think he should have been first team, but I knew he would be. My only surprise is Alex over Gaynor on first team. Not surprised about Anthony or TeeJay either.

Possibly...but its tough to argue he wasn't the most dominating defensive presence in the league, and if your work at it that way how can your defensive player of the year not at least make 2nd team? Yeah he didn't have the minutes but his impact in those minutes was pretty significant.

As for Leasure maybe it was career more than this season -- but over-rated? Dude shoots the lights out. He single-handedly kept coastal in that Asheville game the other night.

Did You Know: In the 3 years (this being the third) that the Big South has given out a "Defensive Player of the Year Award", Kenny George is the first winner to make at least 2nd team?

And if the voters were interested in rewarding careers, I hear that Gaynor fella has been pretty good.

That's too bad he's a senior. Next year they're adding a "most closely related to Chris Paul" award. Has WU had a TV game in the last 4 years where that wasn't mentioned?
