Most of the main people there that lead things are still sick, yet we were at the game early and stood for the entire game and cheered the most that we could. To say our student section is weak is completely asinine when, aside from the Corps when they actually show up, is the best student section the Big South has. We're ten times better than anyone in football, and we're almost to the point where we're the best in the Big South in basketball on any given night. How often has Winthrop's student section been able to get into a coach's head to the point where he turns around and yells at them during the game, without having to cuss or shout profanities? How often has Winthrop's student section forced bad shots at the end of the shot clock? We're not drunk of our butts shouting, "F--- Winthrop, you suck." We're the most creative group in the Big South and, given a good showing the rest of this year, will be the best student section in the conference next year, hands down. I've been to every gym (besides CSU) and every football stadium in the Big South and the only place that can even compare with our kids is VMI. Yes, that sounds cocky. However, when someone who has no basis of anything to speak of starts tearing down my group, I'm going to stick up for them. Winthrop isn't even in the top 3 in terms of student sections.
Uh, I've had water thrown on me, spit upon by a player, gum thrown at me, coaches give me a finger, it was awhile ago but I'm pretty sure LU's student section isn't breaking any new ground. I watched the game and it did seem pretty quiet for a good crowd. You're just not going to be able to match a championship caliber team that had a whole school and community supporting them. I agree that WU's support has been less than optimal this year but to say that you guys are breaking new ground is asinine.
Not that I discourage it at all, I think good student sections at every school and upping the intensity is great. I think what SJ and friends do is great, it only adds to the atmosphere and makes the conference better. Don't take is as a slight, but as encouragement, but it's not groundbreaking stuff and not the best in the conference. WU at homecoming, WU in the tourney are easily better crowds. But it's something to shoot for.
