Winthrop Post-Mortem

overall a good effort, from the sounds of it- no quit in these guys.

Maybe we take the second game at home- but we HAVE TO IMPROVE THE FREE THROW SHOOTING

and this streaky, "don't score for 5 minutes" offense crap has to stop as well.

anyone else have thoughts?

I should clarify to say that I only caught the first half, and a little of the very last part of the second.

the lapse in offensive production that really sticks out was late in the first half, from 6 min left down to approx 2 where we went from a 5 point lead to about a 7 pt deficit, as we got ourscored 12-2 over that span.

same as the Mason game, same as UNCA

has

to

stop!

Winthrop certainly was not very impressive in this one.

We hung in there. Just when you thought that is was getting away from us we would make a nice defensive stop and pull within striking distance but could not get over the top. Winthrop is a very good team that was hungry with the loss Saturday after knocking off Miami the following week. I echo the other comments on this board with the huge scoring drought at the end of the half and the pitiful free throw shooting. Turnovers and rebounds were a problem too.

A loss is a loss and moral victories aren't real exciting, but it seems like the guys are doing better than we have in a while. We have been in almost every game and a 8 point loss on the road is not horrible. Seems like we are on the right path though. Looking for better things and continuous improvement.

I would like to think that our defense was the reason we kept their field goal percentage down but I don't know. Hard to follow 2 games at ounce (LU women were playing GMU at teh same time). From here on out I would like to think that we would be favored in the remainder of our games this year. Need to win the games we are supposed to win.

NO moral victories to be had here, anyways.

We shot better than them.

BUT WE PLAYED SOFTER THAN KCU.

We were wimps. No one crashed the glass, we just watched the ball fall where it might, and then hoped to grab it.

We didn't play defense well at all. This zone type thing isn't working, shooters are WAY too open, and we don't even defend the paint that well!

Horrible. I was very, very wrong about this team.

Coach mentioned looking forward to being home and having some fans in the vines. Then he mentioned our FF guys at Buffalo Wild Wings and thanked them. I wanted to be there but had to work.

Wow. You're more all over the place then my parents trying to figure out their GPS on the interstate.

The big number that stands out to me is the offensive rebound line: 1 for us, 15 for them. I hope Coach McKay can manage to make our guys taller by the next game.

Wow, we didn't play good defense? Well Winthrop is horrible on offense then because they only had 55 points. I think both teams are very good defensively and they take you out of your comfort zone running the offense. I think the last 2 games were good opportunities to get 2 solid road wins but it is not the end of the world to lose these 2. Gotta hold home court and really go on a roll on the road. That 1st in conference road win will be tough. Winthrop is very, very, very beatable. To me UNCA has been the most impressive team I have seen in the bs. I will get to see them up close on Saturday at VMI. I have not seen HPU other than on the edge but they have a chance to win it all too. VMI is 2-0 and play a style that allows them to compete. They even have a chance to win it all with this good 2-0 start on the road. The 1st place team this year will probably be 10-4 in conference. Ugly game to watch but I did like the new uniforms as I said in another thread.

Cmon Scar, are you drinking that tainted UNCA kool aide too? They had one decent win against SC but nothing else. WU has played their worst two games of the year the last two games and won one and lost by one against a team that shot their collective wad to get one win. WU missed about 20 bunnies tonight on dead legs. Liberty looked a little dead too possibly from the UNCA game. I think WU will absorb one maybe two more losses.

The winner of the conference will have 3-4 losses this year. Asheville's better than Winthrop right now. Winthrop's not scary anymore.

Right now, I really don't want to say anything simply because I don't want to pull a Toledo and go too far.

i came back to the house and listened to bob marley to make me feel better about tonights game.

here are my thoughts:

-Kyle O played like crap. most of the guys on our intramural teams could have sscored on,gaurded and shut him down tonight.

-what the heck is wrong with us and playing like crashing the boards is a sin or somthing?

-i think i can predict every scoring run we have now. we go 7-1 then 1-15

-i won't even go into free throws.

-anderson hit two treys in the first 7 min. then went cold and didn't play defense.

- we were terrible. winthorp was worse than we were but still beat us on offense? how does that work? but it did.

if every other team in the confrence figures out we suck at playing against a zone. we are screwed.

scoring droughts are a big problem as are free throws.
disappointed with the lack of adjustments in the second half.
fouls hurt our defense, seemed like ace was just standing around and was scared to play D for fear of fouling out

couldn't get to BWW to watch any of the game in the second half like I had hoped to...but the thing I notice from just the live stats is we just need to control the boards better...its a team effort, especially with our lack of size...that is the one constant negative about this team...

I am looking forward to getting to the game on saturday, rumor has it a good crowd is expected...i hope so

Are you kidding me?

Listen youve got alot to learn okay? dont take this as one of us slamming you, but

no one had any expectations for this year, because we didnt know what to expect. Then you come in and expect us to run the table in the Big South, which is fine you should be enthusiastic about LU, but not being here the past couple years will give you that koolaid attitude. But for LU to not meet your unrealistic expectations is going to happen because you havent been here. I havent been here thatthat long but I along with most others understand where the program has been recently. So I will say, dont expect us to win the Big South, but dont throw a hissy fit when we dont play well. There will be many nights we dont play well, and we may finish anywhere from 3rd to 6th in the Big South. Thats what were looking at.

With the rest, we never tried to rebound, and when they get twice as many shots as we do, theres no shot that we win.

With the scoreless spurts, it wouldnt be so bad if we had second chances, so the point of my post is

We need to learn to rebound

It doesn't take long to lower the expectations bar.

In the post game show, McKay said he wanted to thank all the Liberty fans that were over at Buffalo Wild Wings watching the game on TV. It sounded almost like a promo for BWW. Coach didn't mention anyone by name, but you could tell that he was sincerely proud of you guys for getting organized and watching the game together.

How many did you have out, Super, to watch the game at BWW with you? And what was the atmosphere like there?

FFG....did you roll up anything and do a little puff puff give??

TTL, I love ya man, but your comments are maddening. you say we will be big south champs then you jump off the ship after one game?? stick to your guns. it was a road loss in conference play to the perennial power, and the game was in doubt to the final minutes. our scoring lapses and rebounding hurt us. we actually played decent defense. read Tee Jay's comments in the N&A this morning about ace and that will say a lot as well. i figured we would be 0-2 to start, but we come back to the vines for three so im hoping to be 3-2 when it is all said and done. TTL, im not ripping you because in reality you are a good, enthusiastic fan, but take the good with the bad or ill shove a cheeseburger down your throat :D
