well a bit of a shocker tonight as radford whipped high point 96-76 at radford. Birmingham southern is whipping VMI right now in the second half.

HMO - In other words, outside of Winthrop there's nobody that is really that good. As slowly as we have begun Big South play, we are very much still int he mix for that 2-seed.

Radfurd sure is much better than expected. I really wish we hadn't played our home game with them yet. I seriously believe whoever did that should be fired. Or at least seriously hurt. Their choice.

this is funny. I wonder how many of the boards are gonna be successful. I tried convincing all of the Big Southers to move away from that lousy ESPN message board a while back but everyone said they've tried before and they were just gonna stay put. I guess everyone has seen the success of this board and the CCU and the WU board and is trying to get in on the act. I wonder if any of the schools acutally have a fan base to support that type of thing.

Yeah, that actually shows these guys do at least have a sense of humor.

As for the fanbase necessary to support a board, it will be tough for some schools.

thats the advantage LU has in having a truly GLOBAL outreach. Not many "new" boards can go from 0 to 900 posts and 50+ members within a week.

The Conference office makes the schedule... it is supposed to change next year after two year's of our complaints.

I think LUconn knew that when he made the statement. KK doesn't have many admirers in Lynchburg these days.

Ouch, that hurts the ol' RPI/seeding. But it just goes to show that you only have to lose once in the tournament...

I threw up a little in my mouth watching that game. Worst performance I've seen in a long time. How many easy lay-ups can you miss. James Shuler was gone fishing.

You should brush your teeth after that happens.

I expected you guys to drop a game or two in conference play. But I have to admit I didn't see this one coming. This doesn't bode well for us heading to Conway this weekend.

Coastal played decently well but it was more a let's walk through this performance by Winthrop. Hopefully they learned their lesson.

The Winthrop loss is tough but it is not that big of a surprise. It is more surprising that they have had the fortune to win 24 straight Big South games. That is a credit to their concentration and effort because they are not that much better than other teams in the Big South. Yes they are probably the best team in the Big South but very, very beatable on any given night. Last season they beat Liberty at home in OT and Chuck South in Charleston in OT, Liberty by 8 in Lynchburg but the game was tight all the way...etc. The point is that they are beatable. Thats why we play the games. I am more surprised at HPU being 3-4 at this point! They seem to have a knack for giving away games and playing poorly through stretches. They always seem to have the talent if not the most talent in the Big South. Birmingham at HPU by 16 was a surprise. They are playing well right now. I hope they don't end up with a #1 seed in the tournament because I am not going to Birmingham, AL for the semi-finals, no matter who is in it.

Radford 101-77 over VMI. I will talk to coach Allison to see what happened to the Keydets. I almost went to this game tonight but I didn't have anyone to go with since Smoothie is not up here yet and HMO had class. I am watching it on Tape delay on TIVO from WDRL. Duggar Baucom is still out with his medical situation and Daniel Willis is still the head coach for VMI right now. Radford is quietly in 2nd place with just 2 losses. They are 5-2. The top 3 teams right now are Winthrop, BSC and Radford. Crazy stat. There have only been 20 times a team has hit the century mark in a Big South Contest. Tonight makes 21 and VMI has given it up twice this season including the 100-90 loss to HPU at VMI. There was not a 100 point game in the Big South in 4 years before this season.

well the cat is out of the bag on coach baucom at VMI. he has a heart problem, and it looks as if it is a hereditary problem. hopefully he will return when ihe is fully recovered. this is from the roanoke fishwrap.

Baucom has heart ailment
The VMI basketball coach has had two surgeries and several other procedures since taking a medical leave from the team Dec. 31.

By Mark Berman, 981-3125

After multiple heart surgeries and angioplasties, VMI basketball coach Duggar Baucom hopes to return to work in mid-February.

Baucom, in his first season at VMI, hasn't coached the Keydets since a Dec. 31 loss at Maryland. VMI has said Baucom, 45, was recuperating from surgery but hasn't disclosed any details.

It turns out that Baucom has twice been hospitalized this month.

"It was scary for my family," Baucom said in a phone interview Tuesday, three days after being released from the University of Virginia Medical Center. "I feel great now. I'm getting back, slowly but surely.

"I never thought this would happen ... because I tried to stay in shape."

Baucom had a heart attack in 1990, when he was given a combination defibrillator and pacemaker. He was diagnosed at the time with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy -- the disease that killed former Loyola Marymount star Hank Gathers. The disease causes the thickening of the heart muscle.

Baucom's father and uncle also had the disease; Baucom's father died during surgery at 42, and Baucom's uncle died at 20 while playing basketball.

Baucom entered UVa Medical Center on Jan. 3 to get a new defibrillator-pacemaker put in because his pacemaker had eroded. He had wanted to put off the surgery until after the season, but the doctors told him not to because the erosion could have caused an infection.

Baucom, who had his original pacemaker replaced with no problem in 1998, expected his hospital stay to last just one night and didn't expect to miss any games. But this time, there were "major" complications with faulty wiring, which led to a second operation. He was released on Jan. 7.

The surgeries gave Baucom chest trauma. He had "enormous swelling" and "major clotting" in his chest and left arm. His defibrillator also went off. He returned to the hospital on Jan. 11.

He needed six angioplasties, which are nonsurgical procedures in which a balloon catheter is inserted to open a blocked artery. The procedures opened blood vessels in his chest, neck and shoulder. He also had thrombolysis, a treatment in which blood thinners were put into his arm through a catheter.

Baucom, who has lost 27 pounds, briefly visited his team at VMI on Tuesday and hopes to watch practice from the stands today.

Baucom expects to resume coaching at some point next month, perhaps in mid-February.

"I'm not going to push it. I've kind of learned my lesson," he said. "I've got to get my strength back and get moving a little better.

"I'm not in a hurry to rush back."

The Keydets are 2-4 under 27-year-old assistant Daniel Willis, who has been serving as interim coach. VMI (7-10, 2-4 Big South) visits Radford on Thursday.
