Blair And Porter Named Men’s Basketball Team Captains

January 18, 2006 · Lynchburg, Va.

Liberty University head men’s basketball coach Randy Dunton has named junior Larry Blair and sophomore Rell Porter team captains for the remainder of the season, honoring both players’ efforts exhibited in leading a young men’s basketball roster.

Liberty is one of 11 teams out of 334 NCAA Division I men's basketball programs to boast of a roster without a player of senior status as the 2005-06 Flames' roster consists of four juniors, six sophomores and five freshmen.

Based upon the percentage of underclassmen on the total roster, Liberty boasts of the fifth youngest NCAA Division I program in the nation as 73.3 percent of the team's roster is made up of underclassmen. Vermont leads the nation as 85.7 percent of the team's roster is underclassmen.

"Larry and Rell have demonstrated the character and commitment to build our future on their leadership,” commented Dunton. “They are two exceptional athletes who walk the talk of passion, toughness, courage and ability to bring the success we all expect to Liberty basketball.

“As we struggle through this rebuilding phase, Larry and Rell have been a constant source of the winning spirit that makes Liberty University a very special place. They will leave a strong legacy when all is said and done."

Blair (Jr., G, Charlotte, N.C.) currently leads the Flames, ranks second in the Big South and 19th in the nation as he is averaging 21.2 points per game. A two-time Big South all-conference selection, Blair currently ranks in seven out of 12 conference statistical categories, including scoring (2nd), assists (7th, 3.33), free throw percentage (5th, 77.9), steals (3rd, 2.13), three-point field goal percentage (8th, 39.8), three-point field goals (4th, 2.20) and assist-to-turnover ratio (10th, 1.06).

Blair has reached double figures in all but one game this season, including three 30-point games and a career-best 38 points against High Point on January 3rd. The junior currently ranks 14th in school history with 1,226 career points and 38th in Big South history.

Porter (So., F, Pittsburg, Texas) is having a breakout season as the sophomore has started all 15 games at power forward. He ranks second on the team and ninth in the conference as he is averaging 5.9 rebounds per game, while adding 4.8 points per contest.

Porter recorded his first career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Flames to a conference-opening victory over High Point, while the sophomore has finished with five or more rebounds in nine games this season. He also ranks third on the team with 12 steals.
