i have a meeting with Jeff Barber this thursday, to give him some of my ideas for the football program and basketball program. i think we need some tradition at school. we dont have any. we also need to find a way to get some butts in those stands. so im going to present things like more give aways for first 500 or something, and halftime shows. just throw your ideas out so i can speak for all of us. i know u guys would like to see some things change or be added as well

another thing i was goin to present was a pep rally right before the season, and one for the friday before the homecoming game. i think we should have a "midnight madness" kind of event for football. it would be great because the students would just be arriving on campus and the freshmen would prob. be excited about something like that

That's a pretty obvious one captain fly by night. We are talking about stuff that the program can do to reach out and get the community involved (not just the on campus community but the community at large) and that is something they are discussing at length in the thread Sly referenced

We have a mangers here at LU? How come we don't use them for Christmas? Does LUPD have a new Horse division??/
Now, if we had some good MANAGERS who knew not to was the dark colored uniforms at the same time as the light colored uniforms we might have something.

As for give - a - ways, that was tried and did not do so well. there are still a lot of those Red T Shirts available. It is simple but winning will be the best way. Also, students need to think it is "COOL" to go to games. A bunch of middle aged men are going to have a tough time convincing students of that!

I bet we could fill the arena and stadium with a SoulForce rally when we play VMI. We could promote it as "Picket Two Schools for the Price of ONE" or "Buy one protest sign get one free"

u got me.. i spelled my name wrong, and dont know how to fix it. but i just want to give some ideas about bringing people to game for basketball and some. we need the fans to have a good time at the games. there has to be more than just basketball, or football! we have to have fan involvement. i half time show is something im going to mention. to many times while im cleaning up the bench at half time, the court is empty, or that stupid mascot is driving that motor bike. lol. im gonna go out on a limb and maybe say a dance team.(maybe to provocative) i would like to be apart of 1. a championship team and 2. a fun team to watch

Well you better come with specifics. After all you need to define "FUN". Winning is fun. We used to have a GREAT mascot, he was fun. I think TALLY will agree with me (even though it will cause him serious physical illness) that a Dance team would never happen here. Besides are they gonna do an 18 minute routine? A lot of college basketball teams don't have a carnival atmosphere surrounding them, so I am not sure that is the "Golden Ticket". NBA yes, but they are there for entertainment. Now if you TARGET certain games with certain events you may be on to something. Also, keep in mind the budgetary restraints and who will be responsible for them. Not sure who is running the show there now, either Proto or Keys or MBB or ........ See what I mean? ANYONE can say "We need to have fun and people will come" but it takes a lot more talent to get them there.

If we had a dance team, I'm pretty sure they'd get expelled within the first few weeks on reps alone. Besides, nobody goes to the basketball games at any school to watch the dance team. The only reason people go to the games is to watch basketball and to win a gamecube. It's not worth going for a T-shirt (to other people. I'd go almost anywhere for a free T-shirt), and giving away high dollar prizes every game isn't possible. The only way to get people to come is winning and making the students feel like they have some kind of stake in our program. It could be school pride or whatever but it all stems from winning and tradition (which is formed from winning).

What do people have to lose by not going? That's what you have to answer.

By the way, I think your username is hi-larious. I'm so glad you misspelled it.

haha LUconn. lol... i think we should shut down lahaye and not have intermurals during games. dont u guys agree. nothing should go on while sports events are going on. that's how the big schools do it. they shut down the whole town.

I don't think you can. Nor should you. An Administrator might be able to though.

Agreed on the intermural idea. I've known people that had to go play instead who normally attend all the games. I'd bet that most of the guys who play in those leagues go to most of our games. But when you schedule things at the same time, they don't really have a choice.

It does pain me to say it... but... well.... I ... I aggg..... I agree with BBBBBB BB B... Brokeback!

No dance team will happen at LU. I liked the days when everyone could buy a sheet of paper for $1 and make it an airplane and try to get it into the hole in the moonroof of a car.

Some of these events (half-court shots, etc) would only cost the school a small fee for insurance ($3-500) and would get the crowd involved during halftime...
Some bands can do live sets during halftime as well... They have the technology at the Vines to do it with mostly wireless equipment.

None of these ideas matters though when it comes to the game. With these promos you're still only talking about halftime. We still need a quality product to showcase. With the transition of players...coach D should have that taken care of this year.

2 things: There has got to be more to it than winning because the season after the guys won the Big South Tournament, attendence was not that great plus our girls have won 10 straight and attendance is not that great. The best attendance was when they had college for a weekend and HPU was in town. Winthrop has won 6 of 8 but their attendance is decent but far from a sell out on most nights. I would imagine the Patriot center will be a little more filled next winter for George Mason after their run to the final 4 but it is still a tough sell to that Northern VA community. We used to pack out the gym back in the days of the old Multi-purpose center. The students had really good school spirit it seemed. The sense of entitlement and the 'what's in it for me' mentality seems to reign supreme amongst the student body and that is an attitude that needs to change. We didn't even have winning teams for 2 of my 4 years at Liberty but the games were an event that students looked forward to.....2nd, as far as a dance team at LU? I think we have one or at least some cheerleaders that dressed up and danced because during a game when Sid Bream was in town I was over talking with Jamie Hall and Chris Lang during half time and there was definitely a dance routine going on much like the NBA. Dr. Falwell was there too but he was doing his routine of posing for pix with the long line of folks that do that to him at halftime of every game so I am not sure if he saw it.

I agree whole heartedly with the entitlement attitude. As long as enrollment goes up at this rate and the off-campus age requirement goes down you will have a huge problem developing pride within our student body. On-campus we'll have mostly fresh and soph with indifferent views of LU and those same kids end up off campus talking about how great other schools are.

Another thought is that for all of the complaining about Lynchburg not having anything to do... it's worth looking at atheletic attendance v/s enrollment each year. As Lynchburg has grown in it's economy, atheletics have declined in their attendance.

We've said it before but LU definately has to work hard at bringing in the community. If we could get a few thousand people from Central Virginia to attend the BBall games, it would bring up the energy in that building.... People want to be in an atmosphere... Let's get 2-3,000 people from the community into the vines and the students will come out b/c of the 'event'.

SCAR, the cheerleading team did do one dance routine towards the end of the season. I was suprised they would/could do it, but it was extremely short. There is a possibility we could eventually see a dance team; however, I don't want to see one.

yea.. they did the same dance like 5 times! and they did it first at the pep rally.and i know that we are going to have another pep rally like that one. we had to bring a certain amount of fans and we did. the bad thing is we had more people come to see the dunk team that nite, and the following nite no one came to see a great game against buffalo. that's what i mean, they want to see more than just basketball

I think you hit the nail on the head = BUFFALO. Now if we tied in "Free Wings If We Win" then the place may have been packed. As for the dunk team, they are exciting and, at this poing unique, so that was a good draw. Would people come if they were the half - time show? i am gonna say no. The intramural thing would be a good idea but not sure we should shut campus down for an athletic event. Do we shut down for baseball/softball? Volleyball or T/F? Just remeber there is more to life then MBB.
As for YOU TALLY, I agree that it would be a good idea to look at the inverse growth of LU athletics in proportion to the growth of the L'burg community. See first we agree on the board next..........................................
